Civilian Information
Civilian Name/Nickname: Shinreijutsuno Mujoukan, Mujou for short
Name Meaning:
Shinreijutsuno – “spiritualism, spiritualistic ability, ability to cause psychic phenomena”
Mujoukan – “sense of the vanity of life; perception of the evanescence of life”
Altogether, the name means “spiritualism’s perception of the evanescence of life.”
His
nickname has many meanings, but most people call him Mujou because it
means “uncertainty,” and Mujoukan is known for his unpredictable, even
clumsy nature. Most people are often “uncertain” what will happen to
him, or if he’ll even be able to make it through the day without
stumbling or something!
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Birthday: February 4
Astrology Sign: Aquarius
Blood Type: B
Likes:
Sailor
Moon – Mujou LOVES and/or is OBSESSED with Sailor Moon. Ever since he
was about 9, when his female cousin of the same age showed the manga to
him, he’s been obsessed with the series. He often dreams about himself
being a (male, non-skirted) senshi, which makes the fact that he IS a
senshi all the more appealing. For Mujou, Sailor Moon is a great way to
escape life’s problems and live in the idealized world of magical
girls.
Fortune Tellers – Another escapist like of Mujou’s,
fortune tellers are fun to go to. It’s nice to entertain ideas about
one’s future, and although Mujou doesn’t actually believe in the stuff,
it’s still fun to think about what might lie in the future. He doesn’t
care if his fortune turns out good or bad (again, he doesn’t believe in
it); it’s more a way to hear a story about himself. It’s actually a lot
like Sailor Moon to him; a story about something that probably won’t
happen, but is entertaining all the same.
Karaoke – Like any
healthy Japanese boy, Mujou loves his karaoke! It’s a lot of fun to
attend karaoke and sing as much as you can with your favorite songs,
and in Japanese culture it’s very popular. His favorite songs to sing
karaoke to are most anime themes and some other popular tunes.
Hikawa
Shrine – For Mujou, Hikawa Shrine is a nice, quiet place to go to when
he’s feeling down, or when he just needs to be alone. It’s got a
certain spiritual aura for him, and he enjoys the quiet atmosphere of
the Hikawa Shrine.
Parties – Ever the social butterfly, Mujou
really enjoys a good party. While he’s way too lazy to go to the
trouble of throwing one himself, Mujou loves hanging out with his
friends at a big house party. There’s food, games, music, people –
what’s not to love?
Random likes: Salty food, video games, procrastinating, and rainy days (yay puddles!)
Dislikes:
Computers
– Not only is he bad at using them, but he has to use them every single
day! The darn contraptions never work the way you want them to, and
they’re generally more of a nuisance than a help. This probably has a
lot to do with the fact that his parents are demanding that he major in
Computer Science in college, even though he hates it. Computer class is
boring, and it only adds to his hatred of the machine.
Psychiatry
– Mujou generally doesn’t like the idea that people think they need to
take pills to “fix” whatever is “wrong” with their personality. He
thinks that mental disorders don’t exist as much as people think. Sure,
there are things like Cerebral Palsy, but other things like Attention
Deficit Disorder he finds questionable. In general, he has less
problems with psychology (the study of the mind) than he does with
psychiatry (the application of medication to help "problems" with the
mind), although he believes that the human mind is such a complex thing
that it is arbitrary to try to define in strict terms, and it is silly
to try to "fix" the mind's "problems" just because people in society
have difficulty dealing with them. The mind is a strange thing, and it
should not be toyed with; people have the right to their own minds, in
Mujou's eyes.
School – It’s boring, it’s work, and it’s
nothing interesting. Unless it’s a class like art, Mujou despises
school; it makes him get up early, it makes him work, and then it goes
and gives him bad grades! What a bother!
Parents – Mujou has a
rather strained relationship with his parents. They never let him do
what he wants to do, be it drawing manga or staying up late or sleeping
in. Mujou’s parents have a vision of him as the head programmer of a
computer company where he’ll make lots of money, and Mujou of course
hates computers and doesn’t want to do that with his life. They think
they know what’s best for him, but Mujou thinks they have no idea!
Random dislikes: Spiders, candy, cars, winter, and haircuts.
Hobbies:
Sailing
– Mujou enjoys traveling to places by sailing, or just sailing on the
sea in general. It’s yet another way he is able to escape a life of
school, and having to follow a dream he doesn’t want. It’s a nice way
to leave behind his family and his stress and be on the beautiful quiet
ocean by himself to draw manga. He usually goes sailing with his
cousin’s rich family, because they own a sailboat.
Drawing
Manga – Inspired by the Sailor Moon manga that he was infatuated with,
Mujou has since dreamed of writing and drawing his own manga. In the
meantime, making his own manga is a fun project to escape the dreary
everyday world he lives in. He likes to invent entire stories, escaping
into his own imaginary world in the pages, and he’s a very talented
young artist despite the lack of training he has. His manga usually
centers around fantastical superheroes with appealing character traits,
and if he pursued his dream with more focus, he could probably make
something of himself. Unfortunately, it’s uncertain if Mujou will ever
muster up the kind of dedication and discipline needed for a manga
artist!
Using His Powers – When he discovered his power at age
12, Mujou fell in love with it. It was like he was his own senshi! He
loves playing with his powers to levitate objects whenever he’s bored
and won’t be discovered – like any superhero, Mujou likes to keep his
identity a secret. This joy he gets from using his powers makes him
feel special, but it also makes him an even more irresponsible senshi;
Mujou has yet to quite grasp the full seriousness of his duty as a
senshi, and seems to think he’s living in his own little manga rather
than in the real world where he must use his powers with caution and
thought.
Goals:
Mujou’s goals include impressing
Pathos so that the owl will have a bit more faith in him (it’s not fun
getting scolded all the time!) and becoming a manga artist. He wants to
somehow convince his parents that computers are not right for him, and
that he can follow his dreams. As for long-term goals, Mujou doesn’t
really think about them too much – he’s more of an “in the moment” kind
of guy.
Good points:
Outgoing – Mujou is very much a
social butterfly. He’s willing to approach almost anyone, even if he’s
never met them before, and say hello. He loves social functions and
talking with people, and is never afraid to socialize.
Kind –
Mujoukan also has a sense of sympathy and sweetness to him. This kind
of goes along with his outgoing nature; if he sees someone that looks
down, he tries his best to cheer them up with a joke or even just
saying hi. Mujoukan is a firm believer in “do unto others,” so he tries
to be as amicable as possible.
Perceptive – Mujou is very good
at perceiving things, mostly peoples’ emotions and problems that need
to be solved. That’s not to say he’s good at creating the solutions
themselves, but he tends to understand problems very well, and see
through some facades and illusions. Now, it's not as if he’ll
immediately be able to see through things, but in general he’ll get a
funny feeling and (if it’s something he cares about – i.e. not school)
try to do something.
Flaws:
Irresponsible – Mujou has
no sense of responsibility whatsoever. Procrastination is his middle
name, and he tends to forget to (or just not) do things like homework,
training, and attend important appointments. He’s a touch forgetful,
and lazy, especially when it comes to repetitive tasks like school and
training.
Clumsy – Unable to chew gum and walk, Mujou is a
grade A klutz. He trips and falls often, runs into objects when not
looking, is generally bad at sports, and a genuine butterfingers. He
has awful aim, and really anything that goes with being clumsy he does.
He’s just a little too eager to the point of rushing into a stumble.
Whimsical
– Mujou falls into daydreams almost as much as he falls onto the
sidewalk. In his own little imaginary world as a means of escape, Mujou
likes to think up manga stories to get distracted from schoolwork. This
usually only happens when he’s bored with something, but that doesn’t
make it any less annoying when it happens during things like crucial
senshi meetings.
Personality:
In order to fully
understand Mujou, one must know the one ruling fact about him; Mujou
wants to escape his life. It’s not that his is a horrible, traumatic,
angsty life or anything – he just feels trapped in the mundane
every-day world where we live. He is a true adventurer, and hates
feeling like all his life will be is a cubicle job as a computer
worker. He wants to escape everything – his parents’ high standards,
his dull school life, and most of all, a world in which he feels
imagination is slowly disappearing in place of technology and
materialism. True to his namesake, he perceives life in his world as
vain and always fading away, doomed to become colorless.
As a
result of this perception, Mujou tries his best to hold onto his youth
and imagination. He is perky and optimistic by nature, and tries not to
be too much of an adult. The problem is, while this makes him a fun guy
and a nice person, it also makes him irresponsible; by trying not to
care about the things that he perceives so many adults get wrapped up
in, he becomes unable to handle responsibility and unfit to function in
his own world. Sooner or later he’s going to have to grow up in this
sense, and Mujou dreads losing his imagination. He doesn’t really act
like a child in the emotionally immature sense, more in the “I don’t
want to have to deal with all the stress of the read world” sense.
Mujou
is very much a lovable guy, until you have to work with him. He’s fun
and sociable, great at parties, and lends a sympathetic ear to almost
anyone. When you have to work with him, though, he becomes less fun and
more a pain in the ass, because his lack of motivation to work hard,
his irresponsible nature and his clumsiness get rather frustrating.
The
one saving grace Mujou has in “work” situations is his ability to
perceive and understand problems. He is excellent at understanding what
is going on and even suggesting a solution occasionally, but beyond
that suggestion, he won’t actually do much to help. He’s the kind of
person that goes “We need to solve this problem? Well, we should
probably do something like *insert vague but good idea here*” and then
sit back and be bored.
Most of this lack of motivation to
actually take action stems from the pressure his parents put on him.
Mujou HATES that his parents insist on him majoring in computers, and
trying hard in school, and not drawing manga when it is in his very
nature to do what he enjoys rather than what needs to be done. Never
wanting to succumb to what his parents expect of him (because to him,
he would be giving up part of himself to them), Mujou instead tries his
best to show them how much he doesn’t want to do those things by
slacking off at those things. The problem is, this rubs off in a lot of
other places, to the point where Mujou isn’t very hard-working in any
area other than one that involves something he really loves. The way he
sees it, why should he put effort into something he doesn’t like?
Because
his parents know he can do well if he tries (he was very good at school
up until college), Mujou has stopped trying so that he deliberately
does poorly. This way, he figures his parents will finally understand
that he doesn’t like computers, and then leave him be about it already!
What Mujou fails to realize is this doesn’t stop his parents from
insisting anything; it just pisses them off to the point where they
insist more. Mujou and his parents are both at a standstill; the
parents insist that he majors in computer, he deliberately fails at
computers, the parents insist more, rinse, repeat.
Around his
friends, Mujou shines. It’s always easy to tell when Mujou really likes
someone; he’ll spend his time talking with them whenever he sees them,
and he’ll do anything – even work hard – to help them. Because Mujou
cares about his friends, he doesn’t mind working hard to get them out
of a tight spot, unless working hard involves helping them with
something mundane like school, in which case he’ll get bored and
eventually stalk off. He’s more than willing to help them with personal
problems though, and for these reasons Mujou is good at making and
keeping friends. Still, they can get frustrated with him when working
with him on things like school projects (or, for senshi, training),
because of his irresponsible, lazy nature.
Although a social
butterfly, Mujou is also incredibly comfortable alone. He finds things
to do that he enjoys, like working on a manga or watching some Sailor
Moon. When bored with some of these things, Mujou finds another way to
occupy his time; he goes to the Hikawa Shrine to sit and think about
some manga ideas, or he goes sailing to admire the sea and maybe play
with his powers a little. He may seem restless, but Mujou can sit by
himself and find things to do – as an only child growing up, he kind of
had to sometimes.
Few things make Mujou truly upset. He often
argues with teachers and parents, usually about what he’s supposed to
be doing. With friends, though, or even casual acquaintances, Mujou
rarely gets angry. Even if you insult him to his face, the worst you’ll
do to Mujou is make him a bit downtrodden and depressed; he won’t lash
out at you because he doesn’t want to hurt your feelings. Mujou is
incredibly sensitive to others unless they try to force him to do
something he doesn’t want to do (re: his parents telling him to major
in computers). If you anger him, Mujou will probably start a verbal
fight with you, raising his voice to the point of yelling. When upset,
Mujou does not like to be by himself. Unless he is angry and hasn’t
screamed at the offender yet, Mujou likes to talk it out with a friend,
asking them what he should do or if he is in the wrong. He genuinely
wants to know if he should change his perspective, because as someone
who respects perception, he wants to make sure he’s perceiving the
situation correctly before reacting. He’ll usually apologize if he sees
he was wrong. If the problem was something about how he should do
something he doesn’t want to do, when he apologizes he’ll pawn it off
as “It’s just in my nature,” even if we all know Mujou is perfectly
capable of working harder if he really felt like it.
Appearance
Face:
Indigo, large and wide set, Mujou’s eyes are framed by thin, short
eyelashes and almost straight, thin eyebrows. His face is oval shaped,
and his ears are larger than most. His complexion has a wheat-colored
tinge to it, and his face is smooth-shaved.
Hair: Rosy brown
and messy, Mujou’s hair is always full of cow licks. He usually doesn’t
have time to comb it in the mornings, as he has a nasty habit of
sleeping in and being late for class. His hair has a coarse, almost
sandy texture, even though he washes it regularly. It is long, but
doesn’t grow past his neck; it’s more like a big messy bush on top of
his head. ^^;;
Build: Make no mistake – Mujou is a twig. He is
tall (six feet, which is tall by Japanese standards) and lanky, with a
scrawny physique and wiry, lanky limbs. The boy is practically a
straight line. He has one scar on his left arm that’s about a half-inch
wide and runs from his elbow to his shoulder – he got it when he was
sailing one day and scraped his arm HARD when falling onto the deck’s
wooden floor. Other than that, Mujou is surprisingly scar free for his
clumsy nature – luckily, most of his scrapes are usually small enough
to heal quickly.
Voice: Mujou speaks in a bright, vibrant
baritone voice. He usually talks at a normal decibel level, but quickly
and emphatically with crisp consonants. People who are new to the
Japanese language or the Juuban dialect will have difficulty
understanding Mujou’s quick speech. Don’t get me wrong – he doesn’t
sound like he’s on fast forward or anything, but he does talk a hair
faster than most. When he sings, he is more of a tenor; ever since
someone teased him about his high voice in high school, he’s tried to
speak lower than he sings. Most of the time, when Mujou sings it is in
a loud and off-key voice; the boy is incredibly tone deaf.
Clothing:
Mujou usually wears whatever he sees first in his closet every morning
– again, as a late riser, he kind of has no fashion sense at all. Most
of his clothing is baggy, with bright colors like yellow and red (the
latter of which is his favorite color). He dresses for all seasons,
usually wearing short sleeves and cargo shorts in the summer and pants
and a heavy coat and scarf in the winter.
History:
On
February 4, 1988, Shinreijutsuno Mujoukan came kicking and screaming into the
world. Even as a baby, he was loud and
energetic, never giving his parents a wink of sleep and making a mess whenever
humanly possible. Yes, from the start it
seemed he and his parents would not get along.
Still,
the first few years of his childhood were rather uneventful. Mujou was a rather fun-loving, active youth,
easily delighted with seemingly everything.
In these early years, though, Mujou's mother began to have a hunch that
worried her. She waited a few more years
for it to be confirmed, though…and confirmed it was.
Mujou's
mother had grown up in Shinjuku relatively close to the Ni-chome (or gay)
district, and after enough years, had developed a sort of gaydar. During Mujou's early childhood, something or
other tipped her off that her child was Not Quite Right in some way. Maybe it was his preference to spend time
with little girls (and play the games they did, not the games boys did), maybe
it was his aversion to wrestling with little boys, or maybe it was just a
hunch. Whatever it was, she detected
something, and it worried her.
Unsure
of what else to do, but not wanting her son to grow up gay in a society that
was so blatantly against it (and certainly not wanting to tell the boy's
father, who was not quite as open-minded as she was), Mujou's mother did the
only thing she could think to do. She
raised her son to think that any sort of sexual thought was wrong, and more
importantly, to always keep his youth about him. Any time he did something that could be
perceived as hinting at an attraction toward men (note the wording there: not
anything that comes off as effeminate like say, watching Sailor Moon, but
things that were clearly a mark of homosexuality like looking at boys the wrong
ways), she quietly chastised him (so as to avoid his father knowing). Eventually, Mujou learned to suppress his
sexuality so well that he no longer even did it consciously.
Instead,
Mujou's repressed sexuality just caused his entire personality to remain
childlike. By repressing one of the few
things that makes someone truly adult (or at least marks a step out of
childhood), Mujou's mother caused him to simply remain in a childlike frame of
mind. Luckily, Mujou was at least
adaptable enough to society to remain moderately normal and didn't become
Michael Jackson or anything. He
continued living in this way, an awkward vision of effeminacy in a boy that
seemed to have no sex drive, and most people simply assumed he was a heterosexual
boy in touch with his feminine side.
Still,
that feminine side could not be suppressed, even if his mother wanted it to
be. When Mujou was about 9, his cousin
brought the anime Sailor Moon to his attention.
Immediately, Mujou was fixated.
Somehow, he related so much with these characters - these girls, much
like him, caught between the boundaries of innocence and violence, between the
norms of feminine tenderness and masculine power. Of course, Mujou didn't realize that this was
the subconscious reason, and instead chose to adore the art style, the humor,
the colorful characters, and the plots.
Flash-forward
to high school, where Mujou's interest in Sailor Moon only grew. He read the manga almost constantly, though
after being mocked openly for liking Sailor Moon, began reading it more in
private. Still, he could not resist
talking about it with anyone who he discovered shared his love for the
series. Somehow, in the midst of all
this Sailor Moon love, Mujou managed to do quite well in school. He was clearly the type who was rather clueless
when it came to common sense, but very intelligent when it came to book smarts.
Seeing
his success with school, Mujou's father encouraged him to study computers,
thinking it the wave of the future and thus the best opportunity for Mujou to
make money. Mujou's mother agreed, but
Mujou was not the child he once was (even if his mind was still in that mode),
and he was too inspired by Sailor Moon to do anything but draw manga. He had since become enamored with any and
everything manga, and to his parents' dismay, he respectfully refused to major
in computers.
However, this rebellion did not last long at all. Mujou's parents refused to pay for his
college unless he agreed to study computers, and given his desire to continue
his education (it was the only way he'd learn what he needed to be a mangaka,
even if it meant not majoring in art!), Mujou reluctantly agreed. Still, he asked politely if he could live in
a dorm. While his father was dead-set
against this idea, his mother, who still felt more than a little guilty for
what she had done to her son after all these years, convinced her father that
Mujou living on his own might cause him to mature a bit and see how difficult
the real world is. Convinced, Mujou's
father agreed.Current
Situation: Mujou lives in a dorm at Temple University, Japan, where he
studies Computer Science. He lives in a single, which is very
convenient for senshi meetings (to his dismay – they’re so boring!).
His parents are paying his college tuition, and he has no scholarships.
Guardian
Name: Pathos
Appearance: Pathos is a dark
brown owl with light blue eyes. About a foot tall and with a wingspan
of about a foot per wing, Pathos is the average size of an owl, with
white talons.
Personality: Almost the exact opposite of Mujou,
Pathos is extremely strict, rigid, and impatient with his new senshi.
He finds Mujou’s kind nature to be lovable, but inconvenient for
someone who has to be as morally discerning as a senshi, and he will
sometimes curse whatever gods gave him the burden of overseeing Mujou.
Despite the many lectures and reprimands that Mujou gets from Pathos,
the owl does have a secret friendship for the boy, and the two do have
their rare moments.
Warrior Information
Symbol: The Greek lowercase letter Psi, located here;
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psi_%28letter%29 Main Color: Violet
Secondary Color: Goldenrod
Transformation
Phrase: “Psi Crisis Power, Make Up!”
Sequence:
Mujou holds his henshin stick above his head with both hands, staring
at it as he shouts his transformation phrase. Then, in a flash of
purple light, his henshin stick is floating in front of him, spinning
in the air. It spins once around him, creating his shirt. He spins in a
circle, his hands next to his ears channeling psychic energy into his
stick. In a flash of purple light, his pants are formed, and his
henshin stick spins around his head once more, disappearing and turning
into his hat. With a wink, Sailor Psi spins, and crosses his arms in an
X-shape over his chest, with his hands splayed and his left knee up.
His right leg is down, and his body is facing to his left while his
face is forward. His torse is arched forward, making Sailor Psi’s end
pose.
Introduction Phrase: “How dare you toy with peoples’
perception? The mind is not to be manipulated! I am Sailor Psi! In the
name of the powers of the mind, I will punish you!” Sailor Psi stands
with his right hand on his hip, and points to his opponent with his
left hand on the second sentence. When he introduces himself, he points
to his chest with his thumb. He finishes up by putting his left index
finger on his forehead on “in the name of…” and pointing to his
opponent on “you” with his left hand, his right hand still on his hip.

Attack
Name: Psycho Cannon
Effect:
This is basically a beam of pure psychic energy, about half a foot in
diameter. By concentrating enough, Psi can blast a very powerful energy
beam at his opponent that can tear through metal and severely damage
people; it is strong enough to kill a regular civilian and to leave a
deep wound upon impact on a senshi or villain. He places his index
finger on his forehead and calls out “Psycho” as a small violet orb of
psychic energy comes out of his forehead onto his finger. He then spins
once, bringing his hands together, and splays his fingers toward his
opponent, saying “Cannon!” The blast shoots, and the attack is over.
Restrictions:
Psi can only use this attack twice in a battle before he is exhausted
from expending so much psychic energy. He is also fairly reluctant to
use it because it is so powerful and unwieldy (remember, clumsy people
like him probably suck at aiming!). If he’s not careful, he could kill
somebody! The attack can be dodged because usually it’s obvious to see
coming because he calls out the name. It can also be blocked by magical
force-fields, but most physical shields will probably be blown apart by
the beam.
Special Power: Mujou can control small objects up to
the size of a crate with his mind. He can only control inanimate
objects, but he can levitate and control them if he can see them and
they are within about a 20 foot radius of him. Mujou can also bend very
small objects like spoons, but this isn’t really useful; it’s more for
show. Mujou has known about this power since he was about 12, and he
enjoys using it in public to freak people out (although he tries not to
be discovered; it’s that much more fun when the people don’t know what
the heck’s going on!)
