The sister duo Short & Sweet was formed in 1998, but the foundation for this musical partnership was laid over thirty years ago.
Until 2001, Short & Sweet could be heard playing festivals, benefits, and entertaining audiences in small pubs in the St. John's area. Their debut CD " We'll Never Know " was widely accepted and recieved much airplay on radio stations across Newfoundland.
The sisters, Leona Mercer and Tammy Benteau, decided to take a break during the summer of 2002. Tammy felt the demands of raising a young family conflicted with the time she could give to the duo. Leona continued to play, and in November 2001 she showcased her talent at the annual Newfoundland and Labrador Music Association Awards and Conference held in Stephenville. She was then featured on CBC Radio One " The Performance Hour ".
When St. John's hosted the pestigious JUNO Awards in April 2002, Leona was again given a showcase during JUNOFEST. She also made a TV appearence as special music guest on Rogers Cable " Out of the Fog " during JUNO weekend. It was shortly after that, she made the decision to take a break due to family reasons.
In November 2003, Short & Sweet were asked to perform as an opening act at the local university campus bar. Both sisters agreed that it felt good to be back on stage, the crowd was attentive, and maybe it was time to start playing again.
Now that they are a little older, perhaps a little wiser and somewhat more experienced, Short & Sweet can take a different approach to meeting their needs, whether it be wife, mother, sister or musician.
