Hello,
From September 15 to October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month is observed. Why these dates? On September 15, five Latin American countries: Guatemala, Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua gained their independence. On September 16, Mexico achieved independence; Chile, on September 18. Observance of the many contributions by Hispanics and Latinos started in 1968 for one week. In 1988, this was extended to a month-long celebration.
In spite of controversy nowadays regarding English only and the immigrant, legal or not, question, we must celebrate our achievements and contributions to not only the United States, North America, but also South and Central American countries. And what these countries have contributed to our culture.
Diversity is good. Imagine how boring the world would be if we were all the same. Remember the Model T Fords? They were the same color and shaped the same way. Is that really how we want the United States to be?
How about some of the words we use on a daily basis, at least here in San Antonio [St. Anthony Spurs?]: taco, Alamo, San Fernando, fajitas, Fiesta. If we only use English words, I think our language will be reduced to a colorless, beige-y type of language with no music and no 'corazon'!
What do you think?

Dear Friends,
Great news! Gemini Ink and our Society are co-hosting a benefit event for Trinidad Sanchez. This will take place next Friday August 4th from 6.30 to 8.00pm at Gemini ink. Later on I will send out the formal invitation with all the details, meanwhile I just want to let you know so you can be able to attend. Five dollars is the suggested donation. Please let me know if you would like to read some of your work or Trinidad’s poems or help in any other way. Wine and appetizers will be served.
Rebeca Gomez, Vice President
