Rehairing The Vintage My Little Pony

This is our bait pony Bluebelle. She has graciously volunteered to be our example as she is in need of a serious make-over! ^_^

1.) Removing the original hair: After the head has been removed, cut the hair down as close to the scalp as possible. (It will look rather mowhawkish :P)

Now for the inside of the head… When you look up inside the head, you will see where the hair has been glued to the inside in one line. Slip a pair of pliers up into the inside of the head and grab this “line” and give it a good hard yank! A few plugs should come out with it. For the 80’s ponies (G1’s) this will work probably on the first try, however, for the newest ponies (G3’s), it may take a few tries. IF you have repeated this practice over and over and it doesn’t seem to be working, you will want to run the inside of the head under hot water to loosen the glue and try again.

2.) Getting Ready For Re-Rooting… For the re-rooting process, you will need: A relatively long needle (I’ve had the best luck with beading needles) Strong sewing thread, Hair in the color you desire for re-rooting, Glue (Elmers, tacky, craft glue…your choice) Scissors

3.) Preparing the Hair: in 2 methods Method 1: This is the method I use when I am using hair from a skein of longer length. For this you will need to begin by separating the hair into plugs of your desired thickness. Remember using this method, the plugs when put into the head will be twice as thick! Find the middle of the plug’s length and make a knot there to where the hair in the plug on either side of the knot is even when you fold the plug in half. Repeat until you have made enough plugs to fill in all the “hair holes” :) in the pony’s head. 1 Method 2: I have used this method when I am using hair from a skein that is shorter in length or from a donor mane. For this method, you will need a hot glue gun. First off separate the hair into plugs of your exact thickness need. (You will not be folding the hair for this one!) Make sure that all of the hair at the end of your plug is even. With the hot glue gun in one hand and the plug in the other, apply a dot of hot glue to the end of the plug to where it will not slide through the “hair holes” when being re-rooted. Allow time to dry. Repeat this process until you have enough plugs to do the entire head.

4.) Now for the fun part! Re-Hairing! This is the fun part of the job! First, with your scissors, cut a piece of string approximately one foot long. Tie the ends into a knot as if it were a bracelet or necklace. Then, take a section of the thread (NOT the knotted part!) A push it together to where you will be able to fit it through the eye of the needle.

(Sometimes a little saliva comes in handy here! Yummy! ^_^) Slide it through the eye of the needle.

Now, from the outside of the head, slide the needle through one of the plug holes in the head. Pull the thread through the head and out through the neck. BE SURE to leave some (about an inch or two) of the thread such as the knotted end, outside of the plug hole or else you wont be able to get the plug in!Remove the needle. You will have a loop of thread hanging out the neck.

Place one of your prepared plugs into this loop. FOR METHOD ONE USERS: fold plug to where the knot is at one end and the loose end is on the other!

Once your plug is inside the loop of thread properly. Take the knot end of the thread that is outside the head and pull.

The plug will come out and Voila! You have re-rooted your first plug! Now repeat this step until your pony’s mane has been fully re-rooted!

Problems that may arise:

My thread keeps breaking before the plug comes through!

-It sounds like you may not have strong enough thread. Try a different brand or go to a fabric store and ask where they might have a strong sewing thread that will hold up to your specifications.

My hair just wont go through! I’ve tried all types of thread, but it just wont work!

-Your plugs may just simply be too thick to fit through the pony’s plug holes. Try taking out a few hairs from the plug until it finally goes through. I hope this has helped!
