THE OC ROCKS !!!!
EPISODE 23 – “The O Sea”
5/12/2005
Seth wakes Ryan up at 5:30 in the morning with a new wrinkle on the
Summer doesn’t want Seth scenario. The prom is coming up and Summer’s
been dreaming about going since 5th grade. And now he’s draming about
going with her. Suddenly the phone rings and it’s Sandy, informing them
that Kirsten’s been in a car crash and is in the hospital.
Outside the hospital room, Sandy speaks with a police officer friend
who tells him Kirsten blew a .08. He tells Sandy he’ll look the other
way if he promises to get Kirsten some help.
Julie drops by the Cohen house with a gift basket and a prenup that she
wants Sandy to look over. The prenup stipulates that if she and Caleb
have been married for a year, she gets 3 million dollars. Less than a
year, she gets zip. Julie points out that they’ve been married 11
months and 27 days which may have something to do with Caleb’s rush to
file for divorce. Sorry, no loopholes. All Caleb has to do is file with
the county clerk by Monday. So unless she can find a way to stop him,
she’s out of luck.
Seth and Zach run into to Summer in the student lounge and before the
two of them can get their apologies for the launch party debacle out,
she tells them that she has no plans of forgiving them but she does
have plans to attend tomorrow night’s prom. And they include either
Seth or Zach. She doesn’t care which, but one of them will be in front
of her house tomorrow night with a corsage. Before Seth and Zach can
figure out how to decide who gets to go, Reed texts Zach with a request
that he and Seth meet her for lunch at noon.
Sandy brings Kirsten a cup of tea and a brochure for the best rehab
facility on the west coast. But Kirsten claims that after a scare like
last night, she’s done drinking. She heads downstairs to pour out every
drop of liquor.
Ryan catches up with Marissa on campus and confronts her about what’s
going on with her and Trey. He saw Trey leaving her house last night.
He asked her what happened and she’s not talking so he’s taking his
best guess. Marissa is offended that Ryan actually thinks she hooked up
with his brother. She tells him to go ask Trey what happened.
Marissa
shows up at Trey’s place and warns him that Ryan’s probably going to be
coming by after school to ask him what happened. Her advice? Get out of
Newport.
At
lunch, Seth and Zach’s apology doesn’t seem to go any further with Reed
than it did with Summer. Reed wishes she didn’t have such good news for
them but she does. George Lucas is interested in “Atomic County” and
might want to make it into his next movie. He’s coming into town and
wants to meet with them.. But Reed is only letting one of them go. She
doesn’t care which, but one of them is going to be at the meeting
tomorrow night. So one will take the meeting and one will go to the
prom. Now, if only they had any idea how to decide.
Caleb
drops by the Cohen house and confronts Kirsten about her drinking. He
wants to know if she gave any thought to her children while she was
drinking and driving.. Kirsten retorts that she’s a good mother. Caleb
tells her she’s also an alcoholic, just like her mother. Kirsten goes
off on Caleb, screaming that if her mother had a drinking problem, it
was because of him. And while she’s at it, she reminds him of what a
horrible father he is as well.
Caleb,
who’s allowing Julie to temporarily occupy the mansion, drops by for
his sleeping pills. He explains that he had a bad fight with Kirsten
and hasn’t been able to sleep. Julie goes to bathroom to get the pills
and seems to be contemplating something __________ before returning
with the container. Then she asks Caleb out for one last hooray… the
night before he files. Julie reenters the bathroom and lifts a towel
revealing a handful of pills she’s squirreled away.
After
listening to Seth’s lecture on the virtues of trust and learning from
one’s mistakes, specifically Seth’s mistakes, Ryan decides to ask
Marissa to the prom. She’s thrilled.
Jess
corners Ryan at his locker and asks for a date to the prom. Sorry, he’s
taken. She’s surprised he’s willing to take his brother’s “sloppy
seconds.” Ryan tells Jess nothing happened between Marissa and Trey but
Jess scoffs at that. Ryan asks for the story but she tells him to ask
his brother, who’s apparently not to anxious to answer since her took
off for Chino last night.
Seth
and Zach flip a coin. Heads Seth goes to the prom, tails Zach goes.
They both seem to be cool with the outcome, whatever it was.
Julie
fixes Julie a margarita, just the way he likes it, on the rocks, with
salt and sleeping pills. But he decides to start with a scotch instead.
Ryan
tracks Trey down at his favorite bar in Chino.and convinces Ryan that
he and Marissa got drunk, really drunk, and she threw herself at him.
They agreed not to tell him. Ryan asks if Trey swears that’s the truth.
He does. On their mother..
Outside
the bar, Ryan leaves Marissa a message that he’s not feeling well and
won’t be able to make the prom. Then he runs smack into Theresa. She’s
just visiting from Atlanta for the weekend. What brings him back home?
Ryan explains the situation with Trey and Marissa, and Theresa
convinces Ryan that despite the fact that both Trey and Marissa love
him, Marissa’s the one he can trust.
Summer
is sitting on her front steps with a limo pulls out. The door opens and
Zach emerges in his tux. She’s glad it’s him but her smile is a touch
sad.
Meanwhile,
Seth and Read sit at a super-hip restaurant with George Lucas. Seth
asks Lucas if he went to his prom. Reed’s embarrassed by Seth’s line of
questioning but Lucas seems to be enjoying it. No, he didn’t go to his
prom. He stayed home and sketched Ewoks. Seth announces that if George
Lucas can skip his prom, so can he.
But then Lucas tells Seth that not a day goes by that he doesn’t regret missing it.
On the
dance floor, Zach’s cell is buzzing with text messages from Reed but he
tells Summer he doesn’t have to check them. But Summer can see he wants
to and they both admit they’re a bit disappointed with the outcome of
the coin toss. Summer tells Zach tjo go, just because her dream didn’t
work out, doesn’t mean his still can’t.
Zach
shows up at the restaurant and offers Seth his Tux, his limo, and a
clean break. They’re just not meant to be friends right now. Seth
accepts.
Meanwhile,
back at the Cohen home, Sandy and Kirsten are laying low. The Chinese
food arrives and Sandy, realizing he’s out of cash, goes to grab
Kirsten’s wallet out of her purse and sees a pint of vodka.
Back
at the prom, they announce the King and Queen. As soon as Summer hears
her name she tries to make a run for it but the spotlight catches her.
Suddenly Seth shows up and joins Summer on stage. After a few heckles
from the crowd, Seth takes the mic and concedes that he may not be
good-looking or athletic or the person anyone voted for, but he loves
Summer, so he guesses that makes him King.
Outside,
Marissa sits alone on the grass when Ryan shows up. He apologizes for
missing the prom but she tells him he’s right on time.
At the
mansion, Caleb is taking a dip in the pool when Julie approaches with
his margarita. Caleb tells Julie that he really did love her. He’s
about to take a sip when Julie suddenly snatches the drink away. Oops,
she forgot the lime. Inside, she pours the drink down the drain.
In the
pool, Caleb is suddenly overcome with chest pains. He tries to scream
but can’t. Julie comes outside and sees him slumped over. She dives
into the pool, desperate to save him.
Back
at the Cohen home, Kirsten returns from her shower and Sandy tells her
he found her stash. Kirsten tries to explain it away but Sandy isn’t
biting. Suddenly the phone rings. Sandy picks it up. After a moment he
hangs up and gently tells Kirsten what she seems to already know. She
stands in shock then picks up the vodka and heads into the other room.

EPISODE 16 – “The Blaze of Glory”
3/17/2005
Spring has sprung at the OC. But Seth thinks last spring was better.
Why? Because last year they were a fabulous foursome and now he and
Summer are just a fabulous two-some. Ryan suggests Seth try living in
the “Now,” but Seth thinks they’re already half-way there and just need
to work on reuniting Ryan and Marissa. Summer thinks Seth should stay
out of it.
Seth corners Marissa at her locker with what appears to be a selfless
suggestion – how about Marissa recruits Ryan to help her with the
design for the Harbor School Pep Rally Bonfire! Marissa agrees that it
could be good for Ryan and fun for her. She thanks Seth. Don’t mention
it. Seriously, don’t, especially to Summer.
Lance, a ghost from Julie’s past, who’s coincidentally reappeared just
before the launch of Julie’s new magazine, shows up at her office and
threatens to expose more than just her face if she doesn’t come up with
the money. Kirsten’s also at the office looking for the new editor of
the magazine, Carter, but comes to find out that he left a message with
the receptionist at 3am telling them not to expect him.
Julie shows up at Sandy’s office and isn’t impressed with the humble
surroundings. She drops a video on his desk entitled “Porn Identity”
with none other than herself on the cover. Sandy’s speechless. Lance
Baldwin, Julie’s ex, wants a half-million or he’s going public with the
video on the eve of Newport Living’s launch. Sandy suggests bringing in
the cops but Julie says no way. This time she’s not even thinking about
the company or her marriage, she’s thinking about Marissa, who would
never speak to her again.
Kirsten shows up at Carter’s pad and tries to convince a very
inebriated editor that Newport Living is not just a homage to Julie
Cooper but a real opportunity to turn the community upside down – to
make it about art and culture, to be subversive and irreverent. Carter
says he’d rather be drunk. He thinks it’s just a photo opportunity for
55-year-old women with 25-year-old breasts.
Alex drops by Seth’s room soliciting advice about Marissa. Or more
specifically, about Ryan and Marissa. Alex has really fallen hard for
her and she needs to know if it’s a lost cause. Are Marissa and Ryan
just one of those couples that will always be a couple? Seth comments
that if Alex had been this neurotic and insecure when they were dating,
things might have worked out differently. He also wonders if this is
about the other night at the mall. And when Marissa says she knows all
about the mall, Seth assumes that means she knows all about Ryan and
Marissa sleeping in a tent together… but it turns out Marissa left that
part out. Alex takes off.
Ryan arrives at Marissa and Alex’s place to work on the bonfire design.
Ryan brought Captain Oats along as a model for the Trojan horse he
wants to build.
Meanwhile, Sandy pays Lance a visit at his sleazy motel room,
introducing himself as Julie Cooper’s attorney. He’s there to negotiate
but Lance tells him it’s going to take 500 grand to make it go away,
otherwise the video will be streaming live on the internet in 72 hours.
Marissa walks Ryan out to his car and mentions that she’s glad Seth
suggested they work together. Seth suggested this? Ryan explains that
Seth’s living in the past and thinks just because he and Summer are
back together….that, well… Ah, Marissa finally gets it. Alex,
meanwhile, has been sitting in her car drinking and watching Marissa
and Ryan hug goodbye. After Marissa reenters the apartment, Alex
confronts Ryan, warning him not to go near her girlfriend again.
Marissa gets a message from Ryan telling her he’s not going to be able
to make it to the bonfire after all. Alex asks who the message is from
and Marissa lies and says her mom. Then Alex proceeds to confront her
about other lies, like the night in the tent with Ryan.
Julie stops by Sandy’s office again looking for good news. Sandy tells
her that Lance may be as sleazy as he looks but he’s not as dumb. Turns
out Lance owns the rights to the movie in perpetuity and, given that
Julie was an adult when it was shot, he’s entitled to make money from
it if he so chooses. The only thing he can be charged with is
extortion, but that would involve the authorities. Julie’s still
determined to keep the cops out of it.
Kirsten rummages through Sandy’s Berkeley memorabilia and finds an old
copy of the magazine “Revolution” that Carter used to edit in college.
She makes another trip to Carter’s place and leaves a copy of the
magazine in his mailbox.
Marissa talks to Summer about her fight with Alex. Summer suggests
Marissa move back home but Marissa says she can’t. Why, because you
love Alex and wherever she is, that’s your home? Uh, no, because it
would make her mom too happy. Oh. Marissa explains that Alex is the
reason Ryan isn’t going to the bonfire. Summer wonders how Alex found
out about the tent. Then it suddenly dawns on her and she springs up.
“I’m going to kick his ass back to next year.”
After taking Sandy’s advice to heart that… sometimes it’s the
messenger, not the message… Julie stops by the pool house and solicits
Ryan’s help. Ryan doesn’t want to get involved but Julie convinces him
that this isn’t about Marissa’s relationship with Alex, it’s about
Marissa’s future, which is rapidly slipping away from her.
Ryan drops by the apartment looking for Marissa but runs into an
intoxicated Alex instead. Marissa’s already at the bonfire and if Ryan
shows up there, it’s on! Ryan reminds Alex that this sort of thing is
his specialty. Then, before heading out the door, he adds that if Alex
has to work this hard, the relationship probably isn’t working.
At the beach, Marissa is bombarded by students who can’t make heads or
tails of Ryan’s blueprints, literally. Marissa can’t answer anybody’s
questions and it’s looking hopeless for the horse when Ryan suddenly
shows up and takes charge. Marissa looks on admiringly.
Carter drops by Kirsten’s office with his old magazine in hand and
remarks that it was a dirty trick for her to haunt him with his past.
Kirsten claims she was just trying to inspire him. Carter wants to know
where she found the magazine and Kirsten tells him she got it from a
crusading idealist – also known as her husband. So, you in? Carter sits
down to and gets to work.
Sandy pays one more visit to Lance, only this time he’s carrying a
contract which would make him the sole owner of the film, the master,
and all negatives. In exchange, Lance will get his half-million. Lance
signs. Then Sandy warns him that if one frame of the video leaks onto
the internet, they’re coming after him for ten times the amount for
copyright infringement and piracy.
Back at the
bonfire, things are going great… until Alex shows up with
two big, tough, tattooed companions. She tells Marissa they’re here to
see Ryan. Marissa manages to break up the fight before it gets started.
She convinces Alex that this isn’t about Ryan and the two of them walk
off to talk. Marissa says she didn’t know being with Alex meant giving
up her life. Alex claims she never wanted Marissa to give up her life,
she just wanted to be a part of it. Well, this is my life, what do you
think? Alex thinks she doesn’t fit in. Marissa apologizes if she hurt
her and Alex apologizes for bringing the thugs to her bonfire. So what
now? Alex thinks maybe she’ll go home, save up some money, go back to
school. She thinks this whole school spirit thing actually looks kinda
fun. Then Alex apologizes to Ryan and says goodbye to Marissa. Seth and
Summer arrive just in time to see Ryan and Marissa arm in arm, lighting
the bonfire together. Hmm, maybe last spring isn’t so far off after
all?
