Judging Critique       Terry Davison                      Mon 9th April 12

I would like to thank the committee and members of the Sheffield and Leodensian for the invite and hospitality on the day. I was really impressed by the professionalism of the committee and atmosphere at the show. As we are aware judges now have specific pressure to identify exaggerations with the Bulldogs shown today, this was always the case when it comes to placing the classes but now we must report any problems direct to the KC.

In my opinion with 30 years experience, the bulldogs today are in great form. I could not identify problems with respiratory and lameness that was always present in past years.

I believe this generation of Bulldog fanciers have the right attitude when showing and the health and conformation of the breed is closer to the amended standard than most think.

Minor Puppy Bitch

1st     Handleys,  Haddaway Just a Dream

Beautiful red female with great expression and lovely dark pigment. This girl stood well with lovely front and tacked on shoulders with tight feet. A good topline and reach of neck. A lovely skull with nice turn of jaw, well presented.

2nd Dempsey, Dempsey Absolutely Julie

A larger red and white female with great substance, what a fantastic head with good length of skull and great expression with lovely turn of jaw. Although loose on movement she was sound, healthy with good breathing.

Junior Bitch

1st Danferfields, Bullfleet Beauty Queen,

And what a Beauty, this fantastic female was my RCC and pushed the CC winner hard. A great female with fantastic presence in the ring, a lovely correct head with good wide sweep of underjaw, top of skull wide and flat framed by correct rose ears. Great turn of shoulder with straight strong forelegs, deep brisket and finished with tight feet. The topline was good and moved well, she stood out in the class. RCC

2nd Brown and McCormick, Brodico Lady Million at McCorama

A lovely red and white girl with good head and bone, good pigment with nice turn of jaw. Good topline and move well. This girl was second in a very good class.

Novice Bitch

Post Graduate Bitch

1st Bishoprick,  Pheorm Point Made

A great red and white female with much substance. A lovely strong head, wide and flat with correct set ears with the layback not spoilt by a large roll. Lovely turn of correct jaw. This short female has good body weight and moved well.

2nd     Lunt,  Jaqles Britney

Lovely headed female with strong bone. This girl has plenty of presence, good body shape, moved well.

Limit bitch

1st     Larsson, Jabberwockeys Enjoy me for Britisher

A well balanced red and white female with strong head and wide front with good tacked on shoulders. This girl moved well.

2nd    Moody and Dobson, Belle Beauty Bulldurham JW

Fantastic white female in brilliant condition This girl had fantastic head with correct wide flat skull framed by lovely rose ears and a great expression with dark eyes and correct underjaw. The front was fantastic, correct shoulder set with deep brisket and tight feet. This girl had lots going for her and would have gained higher merit if she moved with some enthusiasm, what a shame as I really thought she would compete for CC when I went over her.

Open Bitch

1st Davis, Ch Hilbull Sheeza Sunbeam Mystyle

What a joy to find out that this beautiful standard female is over 5 years old. When she entered the ring she shown great presence. A lovely standard female. If breeders want to see a type that is close to the new standard they should go over this girl. This girl has no exaggerations only quality from correct head, correct front, correct topline and correct movement, very happy to see her awarded BIS from another Judge after I awarded her the CC. For the record, in my experience a Bulldog with little exaggeration is always at its best over 4 years of age as they have matured to their best, this is glad to see with this girl.

2nd Bells, Belldell Venus Mellowmood

A lovely strong fronted female, red and white with great pigment. This girl has strong bone and a strong head, moved well.

Veteran Bitch

1st  Brealey, Brontemay Miz scarlet at Kaybull

7 years plus this old lady is still active and strong girl with good substance

2nd Fridlingtons, Orphious Moana lisa at Albertwood

9 years plus, this veteran was very active also with good substance

In my opinion the veterans should be paraded with applause and not judged for type but it was a pleasure to see these girls in good form.

WINNING DOGS

Sheffield and Leodensian Bulldog Club Centenary Show – 5th April 2010

This was my final judging appointment in the UK and what a day it was!  A fantastic entry of 245 (110 males and 135 bitches). I was given the honour of judging the males. I found the overall quality of the entry disappointing with two of the three top awards going to overseas dogs. I know that some of the UK’s top males could not enter but we should be producing more quality dogs than we are. Having said that there were some very promising youngsters in the puppy classes.  I think that in the next few years breed club shows will have to put on, as is done in most overseas countries an award for Best Bred in the UK, as we see more dogs at our shows from abroad and the quality in the UK is on a downward turn. So as breeders we must not only improve the health of the breed but also the quality and type. Something that has crept into the breed over the last few years is moving the exhibits at a very fast pace – this is not how a bulldog should be moved ! It is often done to hide incorrect or unsound movement and as judges we should stamp this out before it becomes the norm.
The show itself was fantastic!! And credit goes to all of the officers and committee for all of the planning and hard work over the past couple of years. You don’t put on a show like that in a few weeks. This show will go down in the history of the breed as the best ever – Congratulations! I had two wonderful stewards in Joy and David Brighton who made the judging flow without a hitch. To them – thank you.
Myself and my family will treasure the oil painting that I was presented with on my retirement always.
Thank you all over the past 42 years for your support and friendship – Goodbye.

Minor Puppy Dog (15,3)
1st Steadman’s Hotrockin Big Hunk O’Love – br/wh. Lovely pup of the right size and type. Cobby body, big ribs, excellent top line, nice clear dark eyes, neat rose ears. Strong straight bone with neat feet. Moved well. In top condition.
2nd Morris’ Mellowmood Man in the Mirror at Ragmarte – f/wh. Strong body with excellent straight bone to excellent feet. Lovely top line and movement. Flat skull, neat ears, big nose with open nostrils. Lovely under jaw show to best advantage. Lost to 1st only on size but he is of the right type.
3rd Hartley’s Hartroyals Might Max
 Sorry no notes or photo.

Puppy Dog (12, 6)
1st Hurst’s Bollglade Derek – red powerful dog of super type. Strong body, lovely spring of rib. Real stand off expression. Excellent pigmentation, wide jaw, dark eyes, lovely straight bone to neat feet. Moved out well and held his top line on the move. In excellent condition. Has a very bright future.
(Best Puppy Dog)
2nd Bentley’s Triarder Neyo – r/w lovely type. Fits the new standard in all ways. No exaggeration but still every inch a bulldog. Upstanding with straight bone, excellent square front, lovely head, flat skull. Fine wrinkle, dark eyes, neat well-carried ears, big nose with open nostrils, wide, true jaw, close to 1.
3rd Garside/Lobry Sautier’s Edition of Luxe Kepi Blanc – f/w. Over standard size, body shape OK, nice tail, head is OK but his nostrils are a little pinched and his ears are not his fortune. Lost out in this class on overall type and hind movement.

Junior Dog (12, 4)
1st Holmes’ Shuckstun’s Prestige – red, lovely overall type. Excellent top line, which he held on the move. Super tuck up which is seldom seen in the ring today. Wonderful, correct movement, effortless going and coming. Super condition.
2nd Harding’s Pringhams Rockstar – r/f standard size, big ribs and strong neck, flat skull, neat ears and moved out very well. Lost to 1 on top line and nose roll is too heavy for the new standard and this is the standard I was contracted to judge to.
3rd Bragger/Hill’s Prideofbully Sir George – br/wh standard weight dog with wonderful front. Lovely head, flat skull and neat rose ears. Big nose with open nostrils, darkest of eyes. Moved well. Front on this dog look the winner of the class but not as good in profile.

Novice Dog (10, 2)
1st Smith & Powell’s Carasmel Legend Peace – f/wh masculine dog with excellent bone, big ribs and nice top line. Lovely head, flat skull with fine wrinkle. Neat ears, dark eyes. Tail set a little high.  Moved soundly and with ease. Would like to see a deeper brisket. Well handled.
2nd Bragger/Hill’s Prideofbully Sir Charles – br/wh Lovely type but a little shy on the move. Strong head with super pigment and dark eyes. Lovely layback. Big nose with open nostrils. Well turned, wide jaw. Flat skull, neat rose ears. Strong bone, although feet could be better.  In excellent condition.
3rd Westmorland’s Takamyne Bert

Maiden Dog (7, 5)
1st Lee’s Mellowmood King of Ska – Flashy r/wh. Standard size, brick shaped skull with enough work in it. Excellent pigmentation. Dark eyes, and stand off expression. A bit bum high but moved OK. In good condition. Not a happy bunny in the challenge.
2nd Davies’ Kismond Sahara Sunset – f/w Just a baby. Still very loose and not moving as he should. In good condition.

Post Graduate Dog (12, 3)
1st Gee’s Jaminic Inquisition – r/w Standard size. Well balance overall. Big ribs, good top line. Moved very well. Head of nice type with a lovely flat skull and fine wrinkle. Big nose with open nostrils. Excellent sweep of under jaw, which is wide and true. Eyes showing too much white, which spoilt his expression a little. Ears need to be settled. Lovely front with straight bone, enough length of leg and excellent feet.
2nd Peacock’s Coatesmar Storm Trooper – f/wh Powerful strong dog in hard condition. Strong foreface, good pigmentation, dark eyes, neat ears, flat skull with fine wrinkle. Nostrils could be wider. Lost to 1 on temperament – seemed to be upset by any dog that came close to him, but at dog shows we must be able to come into close contact – this lost him the class.
3rd Ironmonger’s Britanic Iron Duke – r/w, standard size but lacking weight today. Excellent movement. He is of super type with all you need to go to the top, but today he looked as if he was off colour. A pity because he is the type I like.

Mid Limit Dog (8, 2)
1st Ferguson’s Jojams Kruze Kontrol – wh/r Took my eye as soon as he entered the ring. Super type, wonderful first impression and in super condition. Lovely head with flat skull and possesses a wonderful expression. Wide jaw with lovely turn up. Dark eyes, nice clean heavy bone. His movement was OK but I would like to have seen better feet which cost him in the challenge for Res CC.
2nd Bellerby’s Jaybelabee Armstrong – f – lovely sound healthy type, a little too big for the standard. Dark eyes giving a good expression. Strong body with excellent bone and feet. His movement was excellent, sound and flowing.
Shown well and in good condition.
3rd McCash’s Taybull Comfortably Numb – sorry no notes or photo’s

Limit Dog (17, 7)
1st Riley’s Louarne Mr Beau Jangles for Rumbulltums – red brindle and white. A little over standard size but of excellent type. Strong body, in lovely hard condition. Excellent movement. Square front, strong bone, excellent feet, deep brisket, strong well arched neck. Good strong top line. The head is of excellent type with flat skull and fine wrinkle. Big nose with open nostrils, wide jaw with good turn up. An all round well presented dog. Should always be in the cards.
2nd Austin & Harriss’ Rattlenhum Dirty Day for Loxstar – r/wh. Lovely well presented dog. Masculine without being overdone. Strong body, big ribs. Strong arc of neck and nice top line. He has a strong head with flat skull, fine wrinkle, neat ears, big nose, open nostrils and dark eyes. Lovely front with straight heavy bone. Moved OK.
3rd Lunt’s Jaqles Bailey – dark red smut – Standard size of nice type but his colour does him no favours. Handles well with no outstanding faults. True jaw, flat skull with fine wrinkles, darkest of pigmentation. Correct top line. Moved well.

Open Dog (14, 6)
1st Jerome’s Impressivebull Hiron Lord – r/w. Standard size, excellent type that fits the new standard. Lovely top line, well let down hocks, wonderful straight bone to neat feet. Super head with no hint of coarseness but still masculine. Lovely turn of jaw which is wide and true. Dark eyes. Super condition. Held his top line on the move and held himself together in the class and the challenge. A great showman who went on to take BIS under Pat Dellar, also judging for the last time. Dog CC, BOB
2nd Hubert-Iking’s Lux CH Jabberwocks Cloudless – wh. Well up to size, excellent body shape, big ribs, excellent top line. Well worked head with fine wrinkle. Clear eyes, excellent wide well turned jaw. Strong arch of neck and in excellent condition. Showed and handled well. Lost to 1 on overall balance. Res Dog CC
3rd Weller’s Saintgeorges Some Might say – r/w Standard size of lovely type. Fits the new standard. Wonderful front, straight bone to neat feet. Excellent body shape, big ribs. Correct top line. Very strong head. Super flat skull with fine wrinkle. Big nose, open nostrils. Dark eyes. Unlucky to meet two outstanding dogs in this class

Veteran Dog (1, 0)
1st Fridlington’s Theoben Toffee Plum at Albertwood SHCM – wh – In tip top condition. Lovely pigmentation. Not showing his age. Moved round the ring with outgoing confidence. A credit to his owners and to the breed.
