LOOKING AT THE TRI CITIES DAILY PAPER IN NOVEMBER 1956
Nov.3, Deshler get their first win of the year as their football team beat SHS 13 – 0 at Sheffield. For the game, Wiley Montana was the top runner. In the line, the article said that Bill Olim and Dale Williams did good jobs. Gerald Ingle and Bo Vinson gave Wiley excellent help in the backfield.
A $1,000,000 shopping center was being constructed for the Seven Points area in North Florence. The center was expected to open in December 1956.
President Dwight Eisenhower won his second term in the November elections easily over Adlai Stevenson. The electoral vote was 457 to only 74 votes for the Democrat Stevenson.
The new Grabers Department Store Building on Montgomery Ave. in downtown Sheffield was being constructed.
Studebaker Motors were advertising their new “Hawk” sports car series with their new wings and all.
Bill Olim was pictured (at right) on Nov. 9 as starting for SHS against Russellville that night.
SHS barely lost to Russellville 13 to 6 for the seventh win for the Russellville Tigers. For SHS, the article said that Ronald Nesbitt, Jimmy Vincent (I guess they will never get it right), Dale Williams and Wiley Montana were standouts on defense.
On Saturday, Nov. 11, Alabama upset Tulane 13 – 7, and Auburn beat Mississippi State 27 – 20.
In Pro Football on Sunday, Nov. 12, Florence State’s Harlon Hill scored twice on touchdown passes of 70 and 59 yards as the Chicago Bears beat the Packers.
Ronald Nesbitt got his picture (below left) in the paper on Nov. 13 and was described as having developed into a fine end during the season.
The weekend movies for Nov were less than spectacular. How many of you remember seeing “Mohawk” with Rita Gam; “Tennessee’s Partner” with Ronald Reagan; “Riding Through Nevada” with Charles Starrett; “My Pal Gus” with Richard Widmark and George (Foghorn) Winslow; and “Texas Lady” with Claudette Colbert?
Bo Vinson, (they got his name right this time), was pictured (near left) as starting at left halfback for the upcoming Turkey Day Classic with Coffee. Bo was described as an all around back. The next day, a picture of Wiley Montana (below) described him as being outstanding both on offense and defense.
An article in the paper described how the mayor of Sheffield, Leonard Beard, was optimistic that the headquarters of TVA would be transferred to Sheffield.
On the day after Thanksgiving, Nov. 23, the paper described, unfortunately, the results of the SHS game with Coffee in Florence. Coffee won 42 to 14 with Ferdy Cruce and Tootie Hill having outstanding games. The good news for SHS was that Guy Rankin scored a Touchdown on an 8 yard pass.
On the brighter side, a fine looking group of SHS seniors were pictured (below) as the Thanksgiving Game Sponsors. These included David Johnson escorting Glenda Ramsey; Bobby Haddock escorting Judy Glenn; Frank Vetters escorting Laura Dodds; Mike Holland escorting Margaret Morgan; and Keith Collier escorting Betty Heath.
The Nov 29 paper had a picture of Keith Collier and Braxton Ashe who were starring in the play “Foxy Grandma” which was one of five one-act plays being presented by SHS on Thursday night.
An article featuring the Who’s Who at Deshler listed several former Sheffield students. Marilyn Wiley was Best Looking, Gloria Smith was Best Personality, and Jerry Adams was Wittiest.
Coffee High dominated the 1956 All Tri-Cities Football Team, but SHS had Dale Williams (right) and Bill Olim as First Team Tackles with Ronald Nesbitt and Wiley Montana on the Second Team.
(Below) Pictured the day after Thanksgiving with the caption: One of the formations made by the Sheffield High School band in Thursday's Thanksgiving Day football game at Coffee Stadium was a big question mark. While in the formation, the band played "Don't Be Cruel."
