Our Golden Anniversary

Sheffield High School Class of 1957

The story of the auction,  the plate, the enthusiastic bidders and the generous high bidder.   In 2005 when I volunteered to do a website for our Golden Anniversary, I thought my son-in-law had some software for a reunion website that I could use.  No, he did not.  So, I had to teach myself to do it.  I felt I could get through a year and that would be the end of it.  No, it was not.  As Louis Buettner learned with the Class of '56, the classmates want their webpage to continue.     I know the address reads "Freewebs" but the free part was soon filled with pictures, thus a $50-per-year expense.   The webpage is also free of ads when it is paid for.  Anyway, at the morning luncheon Janet Jenson said we might auction a plate with a picture of the high school on it.   That sounded like an excellent idea and it was planned to follow our dinner on the night of June 16, 2007.

Braxton volunteered  to be the auctioneer.  Everyone enjoyed the bidding process and watching Braxton practice for a new career.   I remember bidding by Joe Rickard and Bo Vinson and certainly there were others.   The final bidder was Buddy Phillips at $120.00.

Thank you Buddy Phillips!!   That is enough to take us through 2009.  Buddy asked that the plate be donated to the school.

Information from the back of the plate:  The building for Sheffield High School was completed in 1940 at a cost of $189,000.  A field house and gymnasium were completed in 1950.  This plate was commissioned by Sheffield High School Senion Class of 1955.
