Rabbit care

http://www.rabbit.org/care/index.html is a place to go if you want a pretty indept explanation of how to care for a rabbit. But let me tell you some basics;

  • Gestation is 30 days. Once a rabbit is bred, it will be about a month until it has its babies. Some rabbits wait 29 days, and some wait 31 days. I once had one that waited 37 days! You want to put a box with hay in with them about 2 or 3 days before they are due. This will give them time to rearrange the hay and make a nest. And time to have their babies if they like to have them early. When making a nest, the mother will gather hay in her mouth in big portions and arrange it as she likes. Then she will pull out her own fur and line the nest with it. This keeps the babies warm.
  • Bunnies have a soft spot just like cats and dogs. For dogs, they like to have their ears scratched. For cats, it is under their chin. For rabbits, it is on their forehead. They love it. Try it sometime....
  • To tell if a bunny is friendly; all you have to do is see how they react when they are petted. If they become relaxed and start to kinda squint their eyes, then they are friendly. If the tighten their muscles and put their ears together so that the tops form a semicircle; then they are  not very friendly, but will tolerate some petting. If they jump, flinch, attack you, or fuss and complain; they are not very friendly at all. To make a rabbit friendlier, you have to pet it more often and be nice to it, and give it some time. Some breeds, like Checkered giants, are not supposed to be very friendly, and may have an attitude problem; they will be harder to tame. It is best if you start petting them when they are young. I like to start petting mine when they are about a week old.
  • To tell if your bunny has proper teeth; you first have to get the bunny to relax. This is harder to do if the bunny is not very friendly. If it isn't friendly, then just watch how it eats; if it tilts its head funny, it probably has teeth problems. If it is friendly, craddle the bunny in your arms and lay in on its back, and then gently push back its cheeks and look at the teeth. They should line up with each other horizontally and have a slight overbite. It is a flaw if they line up vertically or are too long or crooked.
  • On diet; normal adult bunnies should have pellets and occasional treats. Bunnies can eat carrots, lettuce(not the kind you buy from the store), Lamb's Quarter, bananas, clover, and other things. DO NOT feed them chocolate. It is very bad for them. Avoid feeding them people food, especially things like pizza and ice-cream, or any fried foods. They especially like Lamb's Quarter. It is easy to find; it grows like a weed and is considered one to most people. You probably have it growing in the back yard. Hay is good too; give them almost unlimited amounts of hay each day, especially in the winter. When summer comes around, you do not have to feed them as much. Also give them grasses. Try not to feed them too much of one thing, you need to feed them a little bit of everything that is good for them. DO NOT overfeed them! No one wants a fat bunny.
