Sharon was born in Jakarta, Indonesia where music and theatre were not considered a thing of any value. At age 10, her parents moved the whole family to Vancouver, Canada to give the kids the oportunity to live a better life. Little did they know, for Sharon that better life includes little of what they had planned.
To help learn English, Sharon's teacher decided to put her into the elementary school choir. Sharon, who has never sung a note in her life, fell in love with singing. She continued to sing in school choirs throughout elementary school and highschool. In grade 7, one of her friends asked her to audition for the school musical with her (Grease); blindly, she agreed. Never been to an audition or even heard of musicals, Sharon looked to her friend to provide her with music to sing. For her first musical audition, Sharon sang On My Own from Les Miz simply because that's what her friend was singing. Then there was the dance audition. Now, up until that day, Sharon has never danced a step in her life! Boy was it ever a surprise to her when she found out that not only did she know how to follow the steps, she also looked ok doing it. The directors were impressed and a few days later she found out she was cast as a part of the chorus. Her friend, unfortunatelly, did not.
Well that was the beginning of the end. In highschool she was cast in every musical mounted, she even stole a leading part from the seniors when she was in grade 9. In university Sharon joined the Musical Theatre Society (UBC) where she played Dorothy in The Wiz and Dionne in Hair. MUSSOC was where she found out that there is musical life outside of school. With a bunch of castmates, Sharon auditioned for TUTS's production of Bye Bye Birdie (first audition in the real world). She was thrilled when she got a callback and was floored when she was cast as Ursula Merkle! Since then Sharon has been seen in various Vancouver stages in productions such as Hair, Annie, Guys and Dolls, Big: the Musical, Seussical: the Musical, and Cinderella.
After giving birth to her two boys (Lucas - 2.5 years and Sam 1 year), Sharon is back out there looking for the next project. This time, with a new goal. Where before performing has taken a backseat to whatever job she had at the time, it is now taking a seat front row centre. She is taking a crack at this as a legit career. So far ... it's been good. You can see her this summer in TUTS' production of Annie as Sophie, Mrs. Pugh and Perkins and in August in Rent as Swing for ensemble. Go to Current Production page for more info.
Sharon is thrilled to be back in the game and would like to thank, first and foremost, her husband Adam for believing in her and for his continuous love and support. Her kids, Lucas and Sam, for allowing mama to go to rehearsals almost every night, and her parents for letting me be the person I am.
I hope you stay a little bit and take a look around. Visit often for new and exciting news.
Love,
Sharon
