Hatake Kakashi was the jônin assigned to train Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura for their real ninja education. He was chosen... because he has a talent for sniffing things out, whatever that means. He's a cool looking guy that looks sort of like a slacker. I love his attitude, since it's sorta similar to the way I act. He is very quick and is very good at ninjutsu. How good? Good enough to read a book while he's fighting, providing that the fighter isn't as good as Sasuke. However, he seems to have a strange taste in the reading matter. Weird guy, and I'm not asking.

He's extremely strict, and has never passed anyone before, until Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura came.... He seems to empathize on teamwork, and had purposely made a test with instructions that would make them want to work separately. Afterwards, he gives them another chance, and tells Sakura and Sasuke that they may eat their lunch, but they cannot give any to Naruto after he attempted to steal them. However, when both of them gave their lunches to Naruto.... They passed! Kakashi's a really strange guy.... I like him, he's funny.

Kakashi possesses one sharingan eye. I repeat, one. This mirror-wheel eye allows him see through illusions and spells, and reflect those powers used to create those illusions and spells back at the one who cast them. It also allows him to discern and copy an opponent's moves. Normally, he keeps his eye covered with his headband (for reasons that you'll find out), and if he exposes his eye to fight an opponent... you know the opponent is going to be tough.

Kakashi got his sharingan eye from a friend, a member of the Uchiha clan. Kakashi, Rin, Obito and Yondaime were on a mission, and Kakashi had become a jounin on his birthday so Yondaime made him mission leader and went off to help fight a part of some massive war. Then during the mission Rin got captured, but Kakashi did not want to go and get her (the reason for this is because his dad, the White Fang of Konoha, did the same thing and became a disgraced ninja and killed himself). Obito then went off to get Rin back since he has a similar attitude to that of Naruto, and as he fought the guy that captured Rin he awakened his Sharingan... then Kakashi comes around to join the fight ('cause Obito gave him a speech beforehand) and long story short they win the fight but the guy they were fighting (an Iwagakure shinobi named Kakko) did a rock slide move ("Doton: Iwayado Kuzushi", AKA "Earth Release: Rock Lodging Destruction") to take 'em out. Since Kakashi couldn't escape in time, Obito pushed him out of the way, but Obito then got caught under Rock slide.

With half of his body crushed (namely the right side) he pledged his awakened sharingan from his left eye to Kakashi, and Rin (a medical ninja) performed the transplant for him. Kakashi then goes to fight the idiot that killed Obito with his newly acquired Sharingan, and Chidori (AKA One Thousand Birds), a move he had just recently invented. So Kakko ends up having the honor of being the first person to be killed by Kakashi's Chidori. And now that is why Kakashi has a sharingan. Also, that is why his "2 bells test" highlights friendship and team work, as he felt if he had made it there earlier Obito wouldn't have died.

Gaara is about 12 years old (at the start of the series), and he enjoys killing people that stand in his way (his way of having fun - he hates people and loves only himself). Long ago, when he was around the age of six, his father, the Kazekage, sent assassins to kill off Gaara because he believed Gaara was becoming too dangerous (after killing a man that passed him in the street). But the attempt failed, and later ninja's were sent...who were all killed by Gaara.

Yashamaru says that he is Gaara's mother's brother (that would be an uncle for all you slow people out there). He also tells us, as he is dying, that Gaara's father, the Kazekage (leader of the Village Hidden in the Sand, like Hokage is for the Village Hidden in the Leaves), ordered him to kill Gaara. Yashamaru admits that he could have turned down the mission but chose to do it. Yashamaru had "adopted" Gaara due to his obligation to his sister, but could never get over the fact that Gaara's birth resulted in his sister's death.

Gaara's father was killed by Orochimaru, who took his body and posed as him during the tournament. They find his body after the tournament, and find out about Orochimaru's plot. Gaara has two older siblings, his brother Kankuro and sister Temari, who are with him in the chunin exam.

Gaara's gourd is made of sand and the blood of the victims, which he says gives him power. In battle, he takes out sand and uses it to kill off his enemies by means of the techniques called Desert Coffin and Desert Funeral. The gourd itself is also made out of sand, as is his armor. He has a sleep spell that gives the demon Shukaku the ability to manifest (just check out the dark lines around Gaara's eyes). Gaara doesn't sleep because if he does Shukaku will take control.

Garaa becomes the fifth Kazekage of Sunagakure (village Hidden Among the Sand) after he leaves Konoha, after the chunin exam. Itachi's group kills Gaara by taking the demon from his body, but Naruto and Chiyo end up bringing him back to life.

Gaara's Name

In Japanese Kanji, Gaara's name is spelled "我愛羅". The kanji on Gaara's forehead, 愛 ("ai"), means "Love", and is the second kanji character is his name. The first kanji in his name means "self", and the third means "carnage". Thus, his name literally means "self-loving carnage". Additionally, before Yashamaru dies, he says that Gaara's name means "demon who cares only for himself". I'd say that matches up pretty good.

Yashamaru's Gender

Someone stated that in the non-English dub version of the Naruto box set, the subtitles mention that Yashamaru is an "aunt", and I'm told that in both the English and Japanese version of the manga, Yashamaru is indeed female. However, most everyone seems to concur that Yashamaru is a male, and a Naruto card of Yashamaru specifies his gender as male... so perhaps they changed it for the anime, and then Yashamaru was just accidentally labeled as an "aunt". Or perhaps Yashamaru is female in the Japanese version, and they just changed it for the English version, though this is highly unlikely due to the deep male voice and male appearance.

I'm told that typically "maru" is the ending for a boy's name (like "ko" is a typical ending for a girl's name). Apparently, "maru" in the ending of a name is traditionally used for samurai, and parents who named their children with "-maru" wished for them to have bravery, thus the reason it is most often used for boys (chances are that someone wouldn't name a female child 'Yashamaru' because of that). But who knows if that actually means anything in this case. And on the flip side, "yasha" means "female demon", so seriously, who knows. If you have any additional evidence one way or the other, please contact me.

Gaara's Siblings

It's no secret that Gaara has siblings, however, someone suggested that his siblings might not actually be his siblings at all, as apparently everyone in the Village Hidden in the Sand refers to each other as brother and sister, which could obviously cause some confusion. There is much evidence, however, that seems to show that the three are in fact siblings. First, in chapters 253 and 254, Kankuro is seen without his makeup and appears to resemble Gaara. Next, in a flashback scene, we see a burning photograph of Temari, Kankuro, Gaara, and the Kazekage. Both Gaara and Kankuro resemble Gaara's known father, the Kazekage, and Temari has the same hair color as Gaara's known mother, who was also seen in a flashback.

Another piece of evidence comes from an episode somewhere in the 74-79 range, where Gaara is having a flashback moment and he talks about how Yashamaru attacked him. It was then that he knew he was to only love himself. At that point in the episode the scene is where you see a younger Temari, Kankuro, and the Kazekage (I am not for sure if Yashamaru is there) all standing together, and it seems as though a camera pans and then you see Gaara, alone. If they are not siblings then why would Gaara think of them, after all they do not learn of their partners until they are a Genin.

Additionally, it's reported in the Shonen Jump manga that they are known as The Sand Siblings. And on the back of some card, it states: "All Three are children of the Kazekage, the chief of Hidden Sand Village. Although Gaara is the youngest, it is he who leads the group, and with stern authority. It seems Gaara feels no affection for his siblings, and they are in fact terrified of him"

And finally, arguably the most compelling evidence comes from the episode after Gaara killed three people in the second stage of the Chunnin exams, Kankuro said "Alright, lets head to the tower" and Gaara responded "Just Shut-up", and a few moments later they were arguing and Kankuro grabbed Gaara by the shirt and said "Alright that's enough! Sometimes you've got to listen to what your big brother says!". Gaara's only reply was "Too bad I don't think of you as my siblings at all; if you get in my way, I'll kill you too".

Gaara's Age

I had conflicting reports of Gaara's age, some saying 12, some 14, and many saying 13. Thankfully, however, this mystery is over, as in Episode 58 (season 3) Gaara himself makes the statement "These past six years, starting from when I was six...". This would make him 12 years old in Season 3. And the Naruto Episode Guide backs this up.

Naruto is a mischievous young boy who, due to the "stigma" of having the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox sealed within him, is shunned by the adults of Village Hidden in the Leaves, since he is the "vessel" of the demon who had killed so many people in the village twelve years ago. Before he was aware of this fact, Naruto was simply a young orphan, living alone in his house, eating his "cup ramen" (instant cup noodles), and basically getting attention to himself by being a brat. He would pull pranks, and vandalize monuments and statues. He even made fun of his ninja apprenticeship classes, inventing "stupid ninja skills" as "Sexy no Jutsu", where instead of transforming his appearance to look like his teacher, he turns in to a naked, blonde girl!

Naruto is not without "serious ninja skills", however. His specialty is the "Kage Bunhsin no Jutsu", learned from a forbidden secret scroll he was tricked into stealing. In contrast to the normal "Bunshin" (clone illusions) done by ordinary ninjas, the "Kage Bunshin no Jutsu" produces multiple "Shadow Clones" of the user, with actual physical bodies. In short, Naruto can create real duplicates of himself (or anything else) and each of the duplicates can physically affect his enemies just like the real thing!

Naruto believes that the only way the people of the village will accept him and acknowledge him as a citizen of the village is to train hard and become the village's next "Hokage" (the highest-level ninja and leader of all ninjas in the village). This is ultimate goal, and he is determined to achieve it no matter what.

Naruto may be a hyperactive knucklehead, but few people have as much sheer guts and willpower, and it can produce a number of surprising results, such as when he first invoked the Shadow Clone technique. Having the much-talked-about Sasuke as a teammate also fuels his fire, since it stirs intense rivalry in both of them, spurring each to push harder.

He doesn't really know it (Kakashi does, though), but Naruto has even more chakra potential than Sasuke. The reason is that the spirit of that infamous nine-tailed fox is still within him, and the dark side of that secret emerges when Naruto is pushed over the mental edge. As he realizes just how big of a problem the demon within him can be, he gains another reason to become stronger: so he can keep the vengeful demon in check.

Naruto technically found out about the nine-tailed fox within him in the first episode when his original sensei was fighting the white haired ninja guy, Mizuki, over the scroll that Naruto "stole" so that he could graduate and be a higher level ninja. Mizuki is screaming at Naruto telling him that everyone hates him and it's a secret why, and that he'll tell Naruto. Naruto's sensei says no, but the Mizuki tells Naruto about the nine-tails fox anyway. However, it would seem that Naruto either doesn't believe him or there was too much going on for Naruto to comprehend what was being said (or Naruto is just extra thick), because afterwards Naruto acts just as if he had never heard it.

Naruto learns from his new sensei, Jiraiya (who we later learn is Naruto's godfather), how to do a summoning jutsu. He learns how to summon Gamma Bunta and his son which is usually carried around like Akamaru on Kiba.

In the Manga Chapter after the two and a half year time gap, Naruto will still be a Genin while everybody else are Chunins and Jounins, because Naruto was training with Jiraiya. But Naruto should be a Jounin, meaning he is at that level. The same goes for Sasuke, because he was training with Orochimaru, so he should be a Jounin too.

There was a rumor among the show's fans that the Fourth Hokage could be Naruto's father. Well, not only was this rumor confirmed in chapter 367 of the manga, but also the Fourth Hokage's true name was finally revealed: Minato Namikaze. Additionally, we learn that Naruto's mother was Kushina Uzumaki, and that she was a ninja of the Land Of the Whirlpool.

Sasuke is one of the two surviving members of the Uchiha clan. This once-great clan in Konoha was killed off by Sasuke's older brother, Uchiha Itachi. When Sasuke demands a reason, Itachi told him he wanted to test his strength. After telling Sasuke to 'live in an unsightly way', Sasuke became cold and shut off his heart to others.

Being the prodigy that he is, Sasuke successfully activated his Sharingan when he was fighting Haku. His Sharingan eyes attracted the attention of an extremely dangerous S-ranked criminal, Orochimaru. Orochimaru gave Sasuke the cursed seal, because he wanted Sasuke's body after he truly became strong.

After watching Naruto become strong so quickly, Sasuke felt inferior and as if he hadn't gotten better at all. Orochimaru used this chance to send some of his shinobi (Sound Four) to bring Sasuke to him. Sasuke went willingly, because Orochimaru promised him power. Thus, Sasuke became a traitor of Konohagakure.

Rock Lee is the epitome of hard work and determination.

For many years, this youth with little to no promise continued in his training to someday become a ninja--despite the fact that no one really believed he could ever succeed. He had no skill in controlling his life force (chakra), and therefore couldn't perform even the most basic of ninja techniques. Even his hand-to-hand combat skills were below average.

Yet, after training those hand-to-hand skills for years with heart and focus, Rock Lee has become one of the better known genin in Hidden Leaf Village. He only knows taijutsu (hand-to-hand), but his skills are considerably tough to handle...the speed his body is able to maintain is unnerving, as is his iron will to succeed.

Lee is the spitting image of his young sensei (Gai, the rival of Kakashi); he idolizes the man. His intensity and excitement with his training spread to all aspects of his life (which you can imagine makes him an interesting character to watch). His rosy red cheeks and large, round eyes give away whatever emotion he feels instantly.

An innocent and sweet kid at heart, Lee is on a team of three with a girl weapon specialist named Tenten, and a famed genius of a specialized hand-to-hand combat style, Hyuuga Neji. Neji's fatalistic nature and constant mockery of Lee reinforce the boy's determination to prove himself.

It is this determination that makes Rock Lee great. After years of being taunted by everyone, Lee is willing to destroy himself to prove one thing: that if a person is determined enough, they can overcome any trial.

Lee goes into a drunken frenzy whenever he takes even a small sip of sake. He basically can't have any ever since he ruined a restaurant at one point after the smallest sip. The whole entire event of being in the restaurant was with Gai and was meant as a celebration for Lee's accomplishment of Primary Lotus.

Rock Lee has another fighting style that is seen later on in the series (after the Fifth Hokage arrives). Lee ends up in a fight with Kimimaro and just as it seems hopeless for Lee to win, he drinks a so-called medicine given to him by Gai-sensai. A few seconds later Lee is drunker than Jiraiya at a frat party. At first Kimimaro couldn't figure out why he was having a hard time fighting Lee until he took a wiff of what was in the bottle: sake.

Gai explains to the Fifth Hokage that Lee knows the Drunken Fist Style. Apparently, Gai took his squad to a restaruant to celebrate and during that time Lee accidently drank Gai's sake instead of water. Lee then trashed the restaruant and when Gai woke up he and Neji tried to restrain him. Gai realized that he can secretly give Lee a bottle of sake in order to unleash his drunken fury.

Lee is also called "The Green Beast of the Leaf" by American fans, and called "The Green Beast of Konoha" by Japanese fans.

Neji is the young prodigy of the Hyuuga clan, known to be the strongest clan in all of Konoha. The title of most powerful clan belonged once to the Uchiha clan--but then that clan was almost totally wiped out, leaving only Sasuke. One of the great reasons for the Hyuuga clan's strength is the secret technique they have passed down through the ages: the Byakugan.

Byakugan is a special ninja technique which enhances the eyes of its user, in order to allow them to see the minute details of your movements. Highly-developed Byakugan can also allow the users to see the chakra (life force) flowing in the body, and to see the spots in the body that control these forces. With the advantage of seeing these spots, a Hyuuga is able to use Jyuuken, a martial arts style which involves channeling your own life force through attacks at another, in order to critically damage his opponent.

Neji is a particularly gifted Byakugan user who is capable of freezing a person's movement in one strike, or completely shutting down the flow of energy in their body with a precision combo.

Despite this strength, however, Neji also has a strong belief that fate cannot be changed, and that his has been chosen already. He constantly mocks those who fight against fate (especially Naruto and his teammate Rock Lee), yet he fails to notice that he himself is silently fighting his own fate. His hatred of his own position in the grand scheme of the Hyuuga clan is noted early and often, and his frustration with fate drives his training.

The intensity of Neji's pupil-less stare when using the Byakugan is fitting for his personality...completely focused on his goals, and truly uncaring for the opinions of others. He locks his eyes onto the object of his desire, and strikes with precision at the first opportunity. He is a genius and a hard-worker...quite the hard combination to beat.

During the Chuunin exams, more specifically episodes 60 to about 64, Neji realizes what Naruto and Lee say is true: that fate can be changed. He is told the history of his family's past, and realizes that his father CHOSE to die, so that he could for once choose something with his own free will. Neji then gives up his grudge against the Hyuuga Head Family, and becomes closer to Hinata's father, while at the same time, becoming a better friend to Naruto. The biggest hint towards their growing friendship is when Neji says "Naruto, you have better eyes than I do," and later on says, "There is someone who can find Sasuke, and save him from the darkness... He can save him! Because... Naruto... You... saved me from darkness," in episode 117.

Sakura, like any other teenage girl, has only one thing in mind...boys! More specifically, one boy, Sasuke Uchiha. She tries to act all sweet, prim, and proper on the outside, but we also get to see "Inner Sakura", a "darker" (and perhaps the true) hidden version of her personality, whenever she makes certain comments.

As the stereotypical, three way, love-hate-triangle goes...Naruto likes Sakura, while Sakura thinks Naruto's annoying. Sakura likes Sasuke, while Sasuke thinks Sakura is annoying! Of course Naruto hates Sasuke's guts (or at least he thinks he does, at times), while Sasuke thinks Naruto is just an idiot. And to make matters worse...it's the three of them who are teamed up together to compose ninja Team 7!

Back then Sakura and Ino were best friends and stopped being friends over well... Sasuke. Before they broke apart, Sakura was a shy sensitive girl and Ino was the one who made her come out of her shell, and when Sakura announced that she liked Sasuke, Ino regreted what she did. Then when Sakura heard that Ino liked Sasuke too she said that she and Ino were enemies from then on. After a few days of breaking up,Ino heard Sakura say the Sasuke liked girls with long hair, which is why they both grew their hair long.

Sakura's long hair ended up becoming a symbol of her rivalry with Ino, as they both grew it long because they heard Sasuke liked long hair. Sakura then cuts it during a battle in the Forest of Death, and later in the chunin exam when she and Ino were chosen to fight for the preliminary rounds, Ino cuts her hair after being called superficial by Sakura. Sakura also used her "inner sakura" to counter Ino's shinten no jutsu. Thankfully, the two of them then became friends again.

Sakura matures a lot during the Chuunin Exams when she is stuck in the Forest of Death with Sasuke and Naruto - that is after she is attacked by the Sound-nin. After Rock Lee made an attempt to protect her, but failed as it was a three-against-one attack, one of the sound-nin grabs Sakura by the hair and tells her to watch everyone get killed. Out of frustration, she starts to cry thinking that she is always being in the way and is always being helped. At that point, she cuts her own hair with her kunai and attacks the sound-nin. Later, Ino, Shikamaru, and Chouji come to the rescue and saves the day.

After Sasuke left, Sakura felt helpless about the fact that she couldn't help in rescuing him. This sprouted a wanting inside of her to help Naruto and the others in wanting to protect the ones she loved and cared for, so she then studied under Tsunade, Godaime Hokage. Two and a half years have passed and Sakura is not only a junior medical-nin, but she also has the super human strength of Tsunade (not to mention her beauty and bad temper). With this strength and new technique to heal, she hopes she can help Naruto on his journey to retrieve Sasuke.

Itachi is Sasuke's older brother and these two are the only ones left in the Uchiha clan. The entire clan was murdered by Itachi about four years prior to the start of the series. Itachi seemed to hold a grudge against his clan and the only reason he gave for his crime was he wanted to test his strength.

He succeeded in killing everyone except Sasuke. He left his little brother alive, telling him:

"Foolish little brother... you can't kill me, your hate's not strong enough... you're not strong enough. That's right, live in shame, run away, and live."

Sasuke has done this, living only to avenge his family and become strong enough to kill Itachi. However, killing Itachi is not going to be easy. Itachi at age seven was already a ninja, at eight had mastered the Sharingan (a special ability of the Uchiha), and at 13 had destroyed an entire tribe. He was able to stand up to Kurenai, Asuma, and Kakashi (all of whom are the highest ranking ninjas, and Kakashi being Sasuke's sensei). He was also able to defeat Orochimaru who is said to be one of the most powerful ninjas of Leaf Village.

Once he killed his family, he fled from the Leaf Village and joined a terrorist organisation called Akatsuki and quickly became a top member. He has returned to Leaf Village on a mission to kidnap Naruto so they can use the demon inside him. His strongest attack is the Mangekyou Sharingan which is the ability to enter another's mind and make them feel anything you want. For example, when fighting Kakashi, Itachi forces Kakashi to feel as if he is being stabbed with katanas for 72 hours in only a matter of seconds. This leaves Kakashi unconcious for several days.

Itachi's ninja level is unknown, though he was described by Asuma as an S-ranked criminal. He graduated top of his Academy class at age seven, had mastered the Sharingan by age eight, became a Chuunin at ten, and was previously an ANBU squad leader at the age of only 13. Now 17, he is feared even by Orochimaru. He left the Leaf Village some years ago, after destroying all but Sasuke of the Uchiha clan.

After the death of the Third Hokage, he returns to the village and encounters Kurenai, Asuma, and Kakashi with his comrade, Hoshigaki Kisame. With no intention of letting them leave quietly, Asuma, Kurenai, and Kakashi fight them, but are very easily defeated.

once a ninja goes rouge they are no longer classified as ranks such as a Chuunin, Jounin, Sanin, and the like, but are instead ranked by letter, graded by skill, criminal activities, and threat level. Then they are assigned a letter out of the following (please remember, this is just my theory):

F:

Basically, losers who can only do stuff academy ninjas can, or aren't ninjas and have very low skills as a warrior.

D:

Basically, a Genin or someone who has done a large amount of misdemeanors.

C:

Chunin or someone who has done a lot of misdemeanors AND a few bigger stuff such as a murder and stuff.

B:

Chunin or Jounin level, or someone who has done quite a bit or criminal activity such as murders and assassinations.

A:

This is held in reserve for people of at least Jounin level and does major crimes without discrimination.

S:

This is held in reserve to that of a major threat like someone capable of equaling a Kage and has done severe criminal activity like a lot of assassinations of major people and other TERRORIST-like activities.

U:

This basically translates to a super S-Class, and relates to anyone who is at a level were they can take on multiple S-Class ninjas with ease.

Now this type of ranking system is also used in real life by military intel bureau and international crime management organizations. In both the manga and anime, many people, including Jiraiya in episode 81 and 82, feel that all of the members in Akatsuki are in fact "s-class".

Shikamaru Nara is in Team #10, which is Asuma Sarutobi's team, along with Ino Yamanaka and Choji Akimichi. Nara can use shadow Jutsu with a limit of about five minutes. He's a good team leader and really intelligent, but everything is annoying to him!

Shikamaru Nara is a lazy genius. He finds many things in life to be annoying or troublesome and is usually foul mouthed. But, deep down, he is a kind person. Not only is he kind, but he is a genius with an IQ of 200+. He is a brilliant strategist as well as a level-headed thinker. He also enjoys the game "Shougi", which is basically like chess.

Though he lacks motivation, this allows him to think clearly without becoming overly excited. These qualities were recognized by others for they could see he was a great leader, worthy of becoming a chunin. That is why he was the only one of Naruto's class mates to become a chunin on his first try.

Apparently, Nara also likes to look at clouds. When he was remembering how he and Chouji met, and how they became friends, he told Chouji that the seat was reserved for him, and that he would get lazy and just sit back and watch the clouds.
