Around the Block 2007

Day 5 (Andahuaylas to Cuzco) "Triumfante!"

We made it to Cuzco!  The beginning of the day was dirt roads that steadily got better and wider.  Yet I have never seen so many animals on one short section of road!  Horses, burros, sheep, goats, and even cows.  With their owners of course scurrying to get them all to one side of the road or the other..  Do they think we are going to run over a cow!  Actually we experience a bizzare case.  As we approach a cow with a long rope attached wander into the road, a sheep-dog comes running out of nowhere, bites down on the loose rope and pulls the cow off of the road!

People think we are racing.  With saddlebags?  By 11am we reach asphalt that takes us up into Abancay.  Gas and a quick sandwich, but while I am on the cell phone with my beautiful wife back in the US, someone eats my sandwich!  Oh well, it's off again, winding up over two passes.  The first at about 15,000 ft gets cold, so Luke and I break out the Heavy Duty stuff (pix on top of first pass).  An hour later most of it comes off and the 2nd pass is an easy one.

One cool thing about Peru is that motos do not pay tolls, we just cruise thru the "free" lane.  We thot we were way behind, but we catch up with Craig, Whitney, Julio and Van at a gas station 40 km out of Cuzco and decide to triumphantly enter all together.  Arriving in the plaza we find that everyone is accounted for.  The Police allow us to put the motos up in the plaza center for a grand picture.

Then it is over to our Hostal Loreto (which has an Incan temple wall right in the bedroom!) and showers for all.  We hit a restaurant where all can get their choice.  Tomorrow is Luke's birthday so he chooses to have "Parrillada de Cuy" (Guinea Pig, a Incan delicacy).  Then to "Norton Rat's Tavern" (a bar and grill beside our Hostal) to re-count the day...
