Day 36 (Cochabamba to La Paz) "Into the Funnel"

The morning finds us working on the motos while the "Seņora" yells at the guy who let us bring the motos into the hostal courtyard.  "Hostal" begins to take on a whole new meaning.  "Lady, we will be out just as soon as we take our motos apart, re-jet, and put them back together again...  It is almost noon before we are out of there (after giving a generous tip to the guy for his grief..) but now our "short" day is no longer short.  We climb quickly out of Cochabamba (no love lost there) and get up-on-top soon where we DO make good time.  As dusk comes we see the most amazing moonrise beside the snow-covered mountains to our right.....

exerpt from: email letter "To My Girls at Home" :

"Hi from LA PAZ.  We arrived tonight, and as I am missing you, I thot I'd drop you a note.."

"La Paz is a funny place.  We came over the high pampa of 4,000 meters (you do the
math) and came into the outskirts of La Paz. We still had a little distance to go and the road started spiraling down, down, down.  Finally we could see below the lights of the city and still it was down, down, down in a tight spiral.  When we came to flat streets at last we were in this 16th century town with the cobblestones and cathedrals.  Then 2 blocks later we feel like we are in New York.  We park opposite the Plaza Hotel (5 star) and try to find our bearings and a little hostel in our budget."

"The "rou
gh guide" that Sara gave me for Christmas mentioned a cool little youth hostel place called "Hotel Torino".  It is on a 30 degree cobblestone side street off a little plaza.  We stopped and went inside, and as they decided that we could park the motos in on the first level inside the front doors for  the night we said: This is it".

"We feel a little like we are up inside a monastry with twisting narrow hallways, high ceilings, and 16th century type artwork.  We're on the 2nd floor (really the 6th level) and as we are higher in elevation than Cuzco it is quite a chore just "running" back up to the room for something. The hot water shower (pix) leaves little to the imagination with 220 volt wires running to it and a burn mark on the ceiling!  Should I send flowers to the previous occupant?"

"We hope to leave for Peru tomorrow
if Luke feels better.  We are missing you and home.  Dont get me wrong, we are the tough macho adventure and adrenaline motorcycle types loving the wild!  But it has been looooong and we would like to be home....  "Home".... now thats a strange word...... "

"Hope you are enjoying your summer.  Save some for us....."
