Around the Block 2007

Day 27 (Foz) "The Falls"

Was cold again, but bearable.  Went to breakfast and to ask when the tour for the falls leaves and found a full bus loading (all from the youth hostel here).  So we skipped breakfast and jumped on.  Out of Brazil and into Argentina was pretty quick as the driver (a kick himself!) took all our documents (27 of us) and did it himself in 5 minutes!

The Iguazu Falls on the Argentina side is much more extensive and well organized.  We decided for the speedboat ride up the river(pix) and UNDER the falls.  Of course that was AFTER we had arrived WITHOUT our rain gear!  Oh well, it was so much more "one-with-nature" this way!  Beautiful, beautiful, BEAUTIFUL!!  Yes we got soaked and loved every minute of it.

We headed over to the island that is in the middle of the falls (St. Martin Is.) and viewed it from there too.  I am so glad we came, but having grown up with the "Boqueron" (a spot in the mountain jungle of Peru w/ waterfalls, etc) as our own piece of nature, I (and Luke too) sort of felt like we were in Disney World.  The power of the falls IS amazing and there is nothing like it.  The roar can be heard miles and miles away.  If you have a chance, rent Robert DeNiro´s "The Mission" that is all shot right here and about the indians and the situation in the 1700´s.  Incredible film!  Even more so now that I´ve seen the falls and the area around here.

One of my favorite parts of the day was eating lunch with Coatis (pix, South American racoon) climbing all over me trying to get at my sandwich!  I had one shortly as a pet that I picked up when I was 11 on a river trip and thot it to be one of the best pets ever....

We made many friends on the bus which makes the hostel atmosphere more like home, but most of them are leaving tomorrow.  We are still trying to resolve our paperwork problem to get into Argentina with the motos....
