Around the Block 2007

Day 17 (Ji Parana to Vilhena) "Just Rolling Along"

Up fairly early and down to breakfast.  In Brazil, the rooms may be marginal at these little hotels, but the "cafe" (what they call breakfast) is AMAZING!  It is a buffet style breakfast spread!  So, if we don't get to stop for lunch, we are NOT suffering.

Luke's bike is not wanting to start in the mornings again without a push, so we have gotten quite adept at me pushing him down the road by 'straight-legging' his rear footpeg and letting out the clutch.  When we are going 15mph, he drops the clutch and it starts, then it is good for the rest of the day with the starter.

Off.  We are coming into more hills.  We replaced the chains in Rio Branco, but not the sprockets and we are seeming to get a "harmonic vibration" at higher speeds.  Not a problem, but bothersome.  We are not sure how often there will be gas, but we stop about every 100 km.  Our butts need the rest by then too.

No problems as we come into Vilhena.  Jonathan (from the SIL, Cuiaba center) has suggested Hotel Comodoro, so its there we go.  Simple, but nice.  Luke is hoping there are English channels on the TV, but no go.

We head out looking for supper.  The girl at the desk recommends a place and we find it.  It is packed with Fazenda youth (20 yr old kids of cattle ranchers) and they are just starting a large-screen projection of Brazil vs Paraguay in the "Copa America".  The food there is out of our budget, but we get drinks and enjoy the atmosphere for the 1st half of the game.  Then it is across the street to the park for a burger (at one sixth the price) and we watch the rest of the game there....

On to bed, because tomorrow will be a day of exploration and adventure off the beaten path.....
