Congratulations to Shannon Beam: 2nd Runner-Up to Miss Virginia 2008 and Virginia's Official State Representative to the 2008 National Sweetheart Pageant!
From left to right: Elizabeth Crot (Miss Hampton Roads) 3rd RU, Caressa Cameron (Miss Hanover) 1st RU, Tara Wheeler (Miss Arlington) Winner, Shannon Beam (Miss Central Virginia) 2nd RU, and Chinah Helmandollar (Miss Greater Franklin County) 4th RU.
As a Cum Laude Graduate of Shenandoah University with a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education, Shannon Beam has made it her goal to make a difference in her community. Currently holding the local title of Miss Central Virginia 2008, Beam has used the crown to reach out to various audiences across the states of Maryland and Virginia about her platform, 'Underage Drinking Prevention: A Collective Responsibility'. After the rape of one of her collegiate peers in 2004, Beam became compelled to speak out about the dangers of underage alcohol use and is fervent to get her message out more than ever after the death of a close friend in 2007 from a car crash caused by underage drinking. At the age of 21, Shannon has educated students and parents of the dangers of underage drinking at schools, conventions, and community activities through her involvement with organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Drawing the Line, and Virginia College Parents, Inc. This summer, she will work towards her goal of becoming Miss Virginia 2008 in order to further promote her personal platform through the Miss America Organization as well as to promote awareness and raise funds for the Children's Miracle Network.
