History

Shaker Square is the second oldest shopping center in the nation, and the first in Ohio. That means it's pretty historic. In fact, the Square was built by the same people who did Tower City. SS is a transportation hub: it's where Cleveland meets Shaker, and many major roads and the RTA run right through it. Built in 1929, Shaker Square was meant to be a one-stop shop center for the people of Shaker who used the trolley (now the RTA). Since then, Shaker Square has evolved into not only a place of business, but also a place of enjoyment, complete with a historic theater and fine dining. (For more in depth, and probably much more accurately and eloquently stated description of the Square's history, please visit our Sponsor's site here.)

Safety

Despite what you may have heard about surrounding areas, Shaker Square is a safe place. Cameras tape every parking lot and parts of the Square, and police and security are always bustling about. Many of the stores open late (like Dave's and the Shaker Square Cinemas) even offer security to walk you to your car if you don't feel safe walking by yourself. Like any busy area, however, try to walk with a friend when possible. Also, to avoid the unlikely event of parking lot crime (at any place, mind you), don't leave valuables clearly visible in your car. And lastly, don't accept candy from strangers in shady vans.

Transportation

Getting to Shaker Square is very easy! Not only is it an RTA stop on both the Blue and Green lines (and thus only about 15 minutes away from Tower City), but main streets like Shaker run right through it. Parking is easy as well. Just follow the signs to get to the free parking lots behind Dave's or CVS, or park at one of the convenient meter spaces all around the Square. Be careful though- the cops are very diligent to giving tickets after time has run up. Click here for directions.
