Travel: the act of traveling or journeying from place to place; a journey; (obs.) labor; toil…see travail.
Tourist: one who makes a tour, or performs a journey in a circuit; tour: a going round; hence, a journey in a circuit; synonyms: journey; excursion; pilgrimage.
People have always traveled for food, shelter, and comfort. For centuries, pilgrims have made arduous journeys to religious sites. What they sought at the end of the pilgrimage varied, whether it be health, fulfillment of a vow, religious ecstasy, or a closer connection to God. Other travelers have found awe-inspiring sites: buildings, relics, and the surrounding natural landscapes. Beauty, knowledge, diversion, and new experiences are some of the reasons that people travel. And as people travel for pleasure and recreation, they become tourists.
