In Silat Seni Gayong, there is two main things that make it different from other martial arts, Adat and Adab. Adat is the tradition and way of life of Malay people. Adab is the attitude and the good manners. Both are important to be a Anak Gayong.
ADAT
PERLIMAU TAPAKA ceremony done by a Master to accept a student. The student obliged to obey his Master and swear respect others and keep the art secret only for him and other members of Silat Seni Gayong. It is a sort of agreement between a new student with his Master. There are two types of Perlimau, Mandi Tapak and Mandi Seni. Mandi Tapak is for a new male student, who wants to learn the basic Silat Seni Gayong technics such as Kunci Maut and Pukulan. There is no Mandi Tapak for women. The Mandi Seni, known also as Mandi Bunga, is for the male and female students who are ready to learn the weapons of Silat Seni Gayong. A student must bring the Sintuk (sort of plant), Limau Nipis (lime), Pisang (Banana), Asam Jawa (Tamarin), Garam (salt) and Bertih (heated paddy grain) and Pengeras (money as a gift to his Master). For Mandi Seni, we add teh 7 types of flowers, 7 needles, and 7 colors of strings. Dato' Meor once said that one who doesn't perform the Perlimau can not claim as Anak Gayong (children of Gayong).
MANDI MINYAKMandi minyak, the Oil-Bathing, or Hot Oil Bathing is one of the multi purpose ritual for the practitioners of Gayong. The ingredients, are meant to bring the healthiness and endurance to the body. The test, of touching the boiling liquid is meant to make the practitioner become brave and confident. The Master will start to heat the prepared liquid, while every participants recites the remembrance and invocations all through the ceremony. Most of the time, after the liquid starts to boil, everyone will gather and "take" the liquid and massage it to all over his body. When everyone has done then, the Master normally will prepare the hot charcoal in a line and every practitioner will walk on it. Some Master is gifted to make those charcoals turn to be anything else.
KHATAM KERISKhatam Keris is a graduation ceremony after the students complete his learning of the Art of Keris. The students need to bring a Ayam (Cock: better to bring one with black feathers), 7 type and colors of flowers, Sirih Pinang with Gambir, Pisang Emas (banana), Kuih Muih Melayu (Malay traditional cakes), Lilin (candle), Pulut Kuning/ putih sepiring (yellow glutinous rice), limau nipis (lime) , akar sintuk , rokok daun tembakau (tobacco), pelepah pisang (banana leaves), sehelai daun kelapa (coconut leaf) and a training Keris made by wood. The ceremony takes place at the beach, while students must enter into the sea to complete the ceremony. This art was inherited by the Great legendary Hang Tuah, Hang Jebat, Hang Kasturi, Hang Lekir and Hang Lekiu.
KHATAM LEMBINGKhatam Lembing is a graduation ceremony after the students complate his training of the Art of Lembing. Lembing (Javelin & Lance) is one of main weapon taught in Silat Seni Gayong. The ceremony take place at the waterfall. This Art was inherited by the legendary knight of Perak, Megat Terawis.
ADAB
INSIDE THE GELANGGANGBefore and after the training, the students must make a circle (or in certain condition make a line and row, while the Master sit in front of students). The training must be commenced by Buka Gelanggang, riciting certain invocation and preparing our souls and minds. After the training also Tutup Gelanggang must be done, with the same way we open it. It can be lead by the Master or any senior student in the club.
The Silat uniform comprise of Baju and Seluar, Tanjak (headgear) and Bengkung (belt).
The training tools, like weapons, must be put in front of the Master during the Buka Gelanggang and Tutup Gelanggang. The weapons also must be respected.
Bowing a little bit when shaking hands with partners and teachers.
Hormat (Malay greetings), placing both hands (right and left) face to face, and bow little bit with partners of different sex.
Kissing lightly the weapons is one of the tradition, like Keris, when performing certain movement.
