PROCION 'MX' DYES This is a cold water fibre reactive dye. Excellent for immersion, direct application, microwave and many other techniques. The dyes produce very brilliant colours that are both light fast and wash fast to all natural fibres. These dyes also will dye jute, wood paper and basketry materials. Soap - 60mL Raycafix Dye Fixative  - Instructions     'MX' INTSTRUCTIONS  * Immersion Dyeing  * Direct Application Tie-Dyeing  * Batik using MX dyes  * Dowload instructions   IMMERSION DYEING INSTRUCTIONS FOR 1 LB DRY FABRIC Materials Needed: 25 gm of Procion `MX' Dye (50gm for black or navy) 2 Cups Table Salt 4 Tbsp Sodium Carbonate (60 gm) Gloves Stirring Stick Water G&S T.N.A. Soap (generic Synthrapol) Large Bucket or Sink Instructions: Wash fabric with 1/2 oz of T.N.A Soap to remove dirt and sizing. Dissolve dye and salt in 2 liters of hot tap water. Add 5 liters of warm water. Wet fabric and place into dye bath. Stir as much as possible for 20-30 minutes Fully dissolve Sodium Carbonate in 3 cups of hot tap water and add to the dye bath. Stir for 30 minutes more. Take fabric out and rinse under cool water until clear. Use Raycafix if dyes bleed persistently. Wash as usual with 1/2 oz. of T.N.A Soap. Notes: Some dye may come out in subsequent washes. As a precaution wash garment separately initially. If persistent wash with Raycafix Dye Fix. Common sense should be used when handling any dye or chemical. Prolonged inhalation of dye powder can cause an allergic reaction in some people. Avoid breathing the powder and wear a dust mask and rubber gloves. Keep out of eyes and mouth and always supervise children. Keep dyes in a closed container in a cool dry place. In an emergency please contact retailer or refer to MSDS. Back to MX Instruction List DIRECT APPLICATION TIE-DYEING FOR EACH COLOUR: 2-5 teaspoons (5-15gm) Procion `MX' Dye 3 tsp Urea GENERAL SUPPLIES: 5 Tbsp Sodium Carbonate 2 cups of non-iodized salt (3 cups for reds) String or Elastic Gloves Plastic Bag Hot Water 60mL G&S TNA Soap (generic Synthrapol)   1. Wash the fabric well and tie, scrunch or bind the fabric for desired pattern. 2. Dissolve 5 Tbsp of Sodium Carbonate and 2 cups salt in 4L of hot water and soak the fabric for 20 minutes. Wring excess solution back into the container. The fabric should be just damp. Keep the remaining for future use . 3. Dissolve the required amounts of dye and urea in one cup (250mL) of hot water. Solution will last two days but the colour is strongest in the first four hours. 4. Place the fabric into a bowl or on the plastic drop sheets. Apply the dye solution by squirting, brushing, pouring or sponging onto desired areas. 5. Cover the fabric with another drop sheet or place bowl into a plastic bag. 6. To Set, follow ONLY one of the following methods; i) Microwave on high for 4-5 minutes. Take out package and leave at room temperature for a few hours. ii) Leave covered or bagged for 24-48 hours at room temperature 7. After setting, rinse the fabric under cool water till the water is clear. 8. Take fabric out and rinse under cool water until clear. Use Raycafix if dyes bleed persistently. In an emergency please contact retailer or refer to MSDS.   BATIK USING PROCION 'MX' DYES FABRICS Procion MX can be used on all 100% NATURAL fabrics: Cotton, Linen, Silk, Rayon, Hemp, and Wool. SUPPLIES Batik wax or a mixture of 2:1 Beeswax and Paraffin wax Pins, tacks or clips to hold fabric taught Vessels large enough to accommodate fabric Table or frame on which to stretch fabric Natural fibre brush or tjanting tool Garbage bag or plastic drop sheets Measuring cup and spoons Electric frying pan Stirring Stick G&S TNA Soap (generic Synthrapol) Pressing iron Hot water Gloves INGREDIENTS The amount of Procion `MX' Dye and chemicals required, depend on the nature of the fabric as well as the shade of colour required. Generally the thicker or heavier the fabric, the more the dye that would be required to achieve a particular shade. The procedure outlined below is for 3 yards of 36" light cotton material (1 lb.) dyed medium strength colour. A - Immersion Method 25 gm of Procion `MX' Dye (50gm for black or navy) 2-3 Cups Salt 4 Tbs. (60 gm) Sodium Carbonate B - Direct Method 4 tsp. of Procion `MX' Dye (6 tsp. for black or navy) 3 tsp. of Urea 2 Tbs. of salt (3 for reds) 1 Tbs. of Sodium Carbonate WAXING PROCEDURE 1) Wash fabric in hot water and 0.5oz TNA Soap, rinse, dry and iron 2) Stretch fabric taut on table or frame using tacks or pins. 3) Plan design and draw on fabric areas to be waxed at first waxing. 4) Heat wax in an electric frying pan at 225 - 350oF. Do not let the wax smoke! 5) Apply wax with brush or tjanting tool and leave to cool for about an hour. To produce a finish with more clearly defined areas, leave overnight or place in refrigerator for an hour. DYEING INSTRUCTIONS - IMMERSION 1) Dissolve dye and salt in 2 litres of hot tap water. 2) Add 5-6 litres of cool water. 3) Stir as much as possible for 15 minutes. 4) Fully dissolve Sodium Carbonate in hot water and add to the dye bath. 5) Stir for at least 30 minutes more. 6) Take fabric out and rinse under warm water till clear 7) Allow the fabric to dry. Do not use the dryer. 8) To add next colour, apply more wax to dry fabric and then dye again with another colour. DYEING INSTRUCTIONS - DIRECT 1) Dissolve the required amounts of dye salt and urea in one cup (250 mL) of hot tap water. This solution will last two days but the colour is strongest in the first four hours. 2) Test for desired colour on a piece of cloth before adding the carbonate to solution. 3) Paint dyes to desired areas with brush. 4) Allow fabric to dry. 5) Apply more wax to dry fabric and then dye again with other colours. 6) On the last application cover fabric or bag the fabric. Leave 24-48 hours at room temperature. 7) After setting, rinse in cold water until the water runs clear. Then follow with a rinse in hot water. 8) Allow the fabric to dry. Again, do not use a dryer. 9) You may also steam the fabric immediately for 30 minutes instead of bagging . See steaming instructional sheet. PROCEDURE FOR WAX REMOVAL 1) Place fabric between sheets of paper towels that are placed over a bed of newspapers (never iron directly on the fabric) 2) Set iron on cotton and iron slowly over the paper towels covering the batik. The wax will rest and be absorbed into the towels beneath. Change the paper towels and iron until as much wax as possible has been absorbed. 3) Have the Batik dry cleaned to remove the remaining wax

Objectives:

Watch your child's (or student's) face light up when you remove that first rubber band from your tie dyed t-shirt. It is truly amazing the designs that one can create with so few tools. Try these super easy tie dyes for kids and see what ours were raving about!

For the purposes of simplicity, we chose to use one color per garment, rather than multiple colors that are so often seen. You can also use colored garments and use a contrasting dye color to achieve the same results.

What You Need:

• various colors of fabric dye (available in the housewares department)
• rubber bands
• rubber gloves
• marbles
• tap water
• garments such as t-shirts, cotton shorts, old jeans, etc.

What You Do:

Begin by rubberbanding your garment according to the design you wish to achieve. See the pictures below followed by the method in which to reach that result.

Prepare dye according to package directions. Be sure to wear rubber gloves to protect your hands! Dye can be just as damaging as bleach to your unprotected skin. Please take the proper safety precautions recommended.

Once your garment is ready, place in the dye for at least 15-20 minutes. The longer the garment remains in the dye, the darker and deeper the color will become. Remove from the dye and rinse according to package directions, usually in cold running water. Ring out garment until water runs clear.

Carefully remove rubber bands and marbles to reveal your new design! No design will be the same as another and different effects can be reached by combining the different methods mentioned above. See below for our results and be sure to have a good time!

>>I used Rit dye, but I used the powdered kind. You mix the powder with cold tap water. The shirts only stayed in for 15 minutes at the longest. The pictures were taken when the shirts were still wet, so that may show them a bit richer in color. But they still came out nice, even after drying in the clothes dryer.<<
