ArtyFax Gallery

On-line Gallery of works by John Dyhouse

Here is a new side to my work; whilst researching ACEO/ATC cards for my SQUIDOO LENS series on making, collecting and selling ACEO's I came across more and more collaged cards and discovered the term 'altered art'.

I found myself slightly excited by a new approach to art and dived in and tried one or two, experimenting with a new found freedom. I found that I enjoyed the ability to put a message on the card and broaden the appeal with humour (or pathos). I was hooked!

This gallery shows some of my early cards, hope you like them.

This first card explains where I was coming from. I had just found that my mother had a stash of family photos which I knew nothing about. My sister had inherited them and she left them to her son, who asked me for help with naming the subjects of the photos. This card shows my mother's three brothers who were in different branches of the services during WWII. It was really the finding of these photos that helped to kick off my experiments with collage.

A few early ones are shown next, not a lot to say about these but a style was starting to develop ( or so I am told ).

Using downloaded images and a little bit of paint and open weave paper

The next was a folded card, little attention given to an overall theme

this is the centre of the card, found words and images from magazines

This card was again done with downloaded images and complemented the first above.

My next series, was based on a background of watercolour colour swatches added wet-into-wet on the paper;

And still developing, the next batch was built up on  photographs which I had recenly taken. This is now 'altered art', and the prose is becoming an important part of the overall design:-

here are another three based on the same style / technique:-

the last card demonstrate a lack of bits and pieces. I have used a snowflake design (two of them cut down) to represent stars. A problem that led me into the next phase of this journey of discovery. See my papercrafting ATC cards

Another humerous card, anybody remember Rolf Harris? Sorry about the photo, this was done for a swap in an Ebay group.

I think I have forgotten why I started to differentiate between collage and papercraft. Here are two of my latest ATC cards, don't know which category they fall into so they have ended up here for balance.

I have started a little series called :- 'Mommy Says'............... The first is 'Mommy Says, Cats Hate The Rain'
