The Stargate is a device of alien origin. Its purpose is to allow travel between worlds through use of wormholes.
When it is activated, a portal materialises inside the ring, which can then be stepped through to emerge on another planet. The portal looks like a vertical pool of water. Normally, a Stargate would be operated by a DHD, or Dial-Home-Device, which would be used to 'dial' in the 'address' of another Stargate using the glyphs seen running around the ring.
The original Stargate Command collected an assortment of
allies and technologies before it was disbanded. When it was, for reasons
currently unknown, almost all of the gathered allies and technologies have been
lost. We do, however, still have a few pieces of alien technology, such as the
energy weapons of the Goa'uld, and a small number of fighter craft back-engineered from alien
technology.
The President has ordered the Pentagon to re-open Stargate Command. Our task is to procure alien technology and allies to aid in fortifying the Earth's defenses.
Everything in this base and everything relating to the Stargate is considered of the highest secrecy, and no one on Earth outside of Stargate Command is permitted to hear of it, unless you are instructed otherwise by either General Kavik, or the President.
