TENNIS MASTERS CUP: Nov. 8-Nov. 16

The last and final tournament of the year is drawing close. This is the tournament that will determine who has the No. 1 ranking for the year! This is Andy's big chance! Andy is also No. 1 in the Champions Race, but Juan Carlos is very close--only 26 points behind. This is going to be a close race, because every single match in Houston is very important. The round robin groups in Houston have been released! Andy (the No. 1 seed) will be in the Red Group. With him in the Red Group is: Guillermo Coria, Rainer Schuettler, and none other but Carlos Moya. Also, in the Blue group, is Juan Carlos Ferrero, Roger Federer, Andre Agassi, and David Nalbandian. Andy will face all the players in his group, and the top two in each group will advance to the semi finals. The schedule has been released, and Andy will play Moya on Tuesday night at 7.00pm. Good luck to Andy!

Andy Roddick lost defeated Guillermo Coria, but then in the semis lost to Roger Federer, who went on to defeat American Andre Agassi. Roger Federer played brilliant tennis in both matches as well as throughout the round robin, and deserved to win the Masters Cup very much! Congratulations to him!

TMS PARIS:

Now Andy's off to Paris, where he might be able to get back up in the rankings. Andy is currently No.2 in the world and needs 300 more points to be even with Juan Carlos Ferrero at the top of the rankings. Andy has received a bye in the first round of TMS Paris. In the second round he will face Victor Henescu, a qualifier. The match is scheduled last on central court on Tuesday. Andy has never played Henescu before. Andy's got himself a tough draw, with the likes of Roger Federer, David Nalbandian, & Mark Philipoussis. But, if he works hard to be on top of his game, he can do it. Good luck Andy!

Andy df. Victor Henescu 7-6, 7-6 in the second round of TMS PARIS. He played well, maybe he's coming out of the recent slump, which is what we all want to see! Since Andy won his second round match, he will be playing on Thursday! He is due to play Tommy Robredo of Spain. This seems tough, but if Andy can keep up the brilliant tennis, Robredo's in for a nightmare. Good luck to him this Thursday!

Yes! Andy Roddick df. Tommy Robredo 6-3, 6-4! Great tennis, great times! Andy plays Jonas Bjorkman next! But, here's some exciting news: Andy's No. 1--in both the Race & ATP Rankings! Thanks to Ferrero's loss, Andy's captured the No. 1 for the first time! Congrats to him! Good luck to him agains Jonas!

Andy won over Jonas, 7-5, 7-6! This means he's in the semifinals against Tim Henman! This will be hard, considering that Timmy has been great on his game. Good luck to him!

Oh no! Andy loses to Tim Henman, 7-6, 7-6! This isn't very good for Andy, but however, he is still No. 1 in the ATP Rankings and the Champions Race! Congratulations to Andy on this!

(Tim Henman def. Andrei Pavel 6-2, 7-6(6), 7-6(2) in Paris Finals)

BASEL: Oct. 21-Oct 27

David Nalbandian df. Andy Roddick 7-5, 7-5 in the semifinal of Basel. That's not good news, considering that Andy could've regained the No.1 spot. He wasn't playing his best, was hard to keep serve, and Nalbandian was also good on his game, so it's no surprise, just hope that Andy can get back on his game. Good luck to him in TMS Paris.

Andy's made it through to the semifinal of Basel defeating Jean Claude Scherrer 6-3, 7-6 in his first round match, also defeating Gilles Elseneer 6-3, 7-6 in his second round match, he also beat Oliver Rochus 6-4,  6-4, to get to this semifinal match which should be amazing. He plays David Nalbandian today. This is a very important match for Andy, because of he wins, he can regain the No. 1 position he previously held in the Champions Race.

TMS MADRID:

The tennis masters series: Madrid is done. Andy Roddick lost after losing to Nicolas Massu 7-6, 6-2. His next tournament is in Basel next week. Good luck to Andy and hopefully he can gain the No. 1 spot! However, since Juan Carlos Ferrero won the finals in Madrid, beating Nicolas Massu in 3 straight sets, Juan Carlos now leads the ATP Rankings and the Champions Race. The latter of which Andy had the lead. But, this doesn't mean that Andy has no chance at No. 1. If he continues to play his best (and use his insane serve, which should help), he can take it away from Juan. Go Andy!

US Open 2003

Andy Roddick Captures First Ever Grand Slam Title!

Sorry that this hasn't been updated in so long! Wow! Andy Roddick df Juan Carlos Ferrero in his first US Open Final, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3! Congratulations to him!!!!! This is an amazing feat for Andy. And we can tell that he knows it too, shedding some tears proves that he really cares about his game!

A loving gesture from Mandy: She initially had no ticket booked for a flight to see the final, but realiizing that it was his 1st US Open final she came over, and thank god she did, because Andy won!!! After he won, he went into the stands and hugged and kissed her....and also hugged his coach, Brad Gilbert *lol*

From the US Open Official Site:

What happened?
Roddick was simply too much for the Mosquito today. Ferrero was solid, but the way Roddick was serving, he never had a chance to create a real buzz. In fact, he only had two break-point chances the entire match and could do nothing with them. Meanwhile, he served pretty well himself, but while he only allowed three break-point opportunities, Roddick managed to step up and convert on two of them en route to his 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 win. Andy was strong, sandwiching scorching forehands, well-placed backhands and solid net play between his powerhouse of a serve, a serve that hit a tournament-high 141 mph during the second set and net him 22 aces -- 11 in the second set and three straight at the end to put an exclamation point on the match. While Andy held Ferrero off the board on his services, he managed to break Ferrero's serve twice, once in the first set and once in the third set, and plowed through the second-set tiebreaker.
Stat on the match
Ferrero was 13 for 16 on his net approaches, including 9 of 10 in the two 6-3 sets. That total adds up to an 81% success rate, the best he has been all tournament. That makes it all the more curious why he only came to net 16 times -- the fewest he made in any match this tournament. Roddick won 35 of his 38 first serves in the first two sets, including a stretch where he won 23 in a row. Another stat worthy of mentioning: Andy is now 37-2 since his first-round loss at the French Open, when Brad Gilbert became his coach, with five titles in seven events.
Turning point
With the score knotted at 1-1 in the very first set, Ferrero had a break-point opportunity. Roddick blasted a 138-mph serve to spoil Ferrero's hopes for an early lead and held to make it, 2-1. In the very next game, Roddick had a break-point opportunity and jumped on it, crushing a forehand winner right past Ferrero and taking the 3-1 lead. Roddick didn't allow another point on his serve until midway through the second set, and Ferrero never again came close to another break point opportunity until late in the third set. The tone of the match was set, and Ferrero could never make up the lost ground. After the two players traded break-point opportunities in the first set, with only Roddick converting, they both held serve throughout the entire second set, leading to a tiebreaker. Ferrero lost the first point on his own serve, but then came back and did the impossible -- winning two straight off Roddick's unbreakable serve to give him a mini-break in the best of seven. This might have deflated Andy in year's past, but instead the 21-year-old came back and won the next six points in a row and took an insurmountable two-sets-to-none lead.
What's next
While he didn't go all the way, this is still not a total loss for Ferrero. Just by reaching the final, Ferrero has not only put his stamp on a successful season in which he has won three titles, including his first Grand Slam at Roland Garros, but on Monday morning he will be named the No. 1 player in the world by virtue of advancing farther than semifinal opponent Andre Agassi. Roddick has the monkey off his back. People had been wondering for years when the new generation of male American tennis players would take the next step into stardom, and as Dick Enberg said, "Wait no longer, the new generation is here!" Andy started his press conference with: "No more questions about being the future of American tennis!"... How will he handle being a favorite in the coming Grand Slams?

View from the crowd

Ferrero has to come away from this tournament pleased, as his six wins are almost as many as he had in his previous four trips to Flushing (he had a 7-4 career record coming in).

Andy, doubled over with emotion after match point, looked as if he might lose it right there on the court. But he gathered himself and jumped into the crowd a la Pete Sampras to group-hug his entourage, including his family, coach Gilbert and girlfriend Mandy Moore.
