The 10 Commandments

Just a reminder:

A PET'S TEN COMMANDMENTS.........

 1. My life is likely to last 10-15 years.  Any separation from you is likely to be painful.

2. Give me time to understand what you want of me.

3. Place your trust in me.  It is crucial for my well-being..

4. Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment.  You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.

5. Talk to me.  Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.

6. Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.

7. Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.

8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if
something might be bothering me.  Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.

9. Please take care of me when I grow old.  You too, will grow old.

 10. On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please.  Never say you can't bear to watch.
Don't make me face this alone.  Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so.

Mr Todd

Mr Todd was named after the Beatrix Potter character: a handsome foxy gentleman!!

Toddy is one of the most gorgeous dogs that I have saved. He is a gentle, responsive little fellow,
always has a smile on his face, always happy. He adores a ride in the car, loves to chase a ball, and
CAN WALK ON HIS HIND LEGS!!

Toddy is a good eater, very social with other dogs, loves all people from toddlers to geriatrics, and does
not have a mean bone in his body. He is looking for a kind home preferably with older children who will romp
and play with him.

Mr Todd is 6-7 years old, desexed, wormed, vaccinated, microchipped and registered. The reimbursement of
his vet fees and council expenses is $290.

Please phone Katy on 9652 1666 if you would like to meet him.

Lucinda

Lucinda came home with me as a Special Needs dog after a long period of neglect. She is an older girl,
probably 9-10 years of age, with a gentle and trusting nature.

For a little dog who has had a rather rough life, the spring in her step is a joy to behold. She just prances!!

Cinders favourite things are dozing in the sun, eating her meals, and being made to feel special. She takes a
lively interest in what's going on around her, mixes beautifully with other dogs, and enjoys company.

Since being with me, she has put on weight, is no longer anaemic from fleas, is heartworm free, microchipped and registered.

If you would like some gentle companionship, have a kind heart and a warm corner in your home, Lucinda could be the special
little dog that you have been waiting to meet. A donation of $100 towards her vet fees would be appreciated.

Please phone Katy on 9652 1666 for further information.

Bosca - Unusual Charmer

Bosca is a Newfoundland cross who has just turned nine.  Where Bosca came from is a mystery he is extremely well trained but obviously badly neglected.

Bosca requires a loving owner who can give him the attention he hasn't recieved in the past and can treat him with the respect he deserves in his twilight years.  Someone who is home for a large percentage of the day would be ideal and it would be great if Bosca could spend some time inside.

Bosca walks perfectly on the lead and understands voice commands and signals, when given a command he makes a grumbling sound to confirm he understands which can be unnerving until you get used to it.  Bosca does not have any health issues but will need to be monitored closely due to his age.  When Bosca first arrived with us he was suffering from anxiety but he improves everyday.  Bosca is very special and will it will be a lucky person who gets to have him as part of their family.

Poster Drive - Help Needed Please!

If you have access to a printer would you please consider printing off a poster for one (or more) of our dogs? Sydney, NSW, ACT would be the areas we need some coverage so if you are in these areas or have links in these areas a few posters placed at work, on community noticeboards or at vets and petshops (the ones that don't sell animals) would help.

Just follow the links and hit print a poster:

Do you want to 'surrender' your dog?

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not email or call me wanting to surrender your old dog! Please think again! I will not come to your home and pick up your dog and take your 'problem' away. That is NOT how it works.

As a dog owner your responsibility continues forever and if circumstances come up that are totally out of your control then there is much you have to do. My first point is the circumstances - these need to be carefully considered. To uproot a dog in his/ her golden years is more than traumatic to the dog and beyond sad for breaking the bonds. Many of the 'excuses' I hear are very thin on the ground and likely to get a very poor reaction from me.

Witout dealing with the reasons individually the following basics apply once having decided that there is no viable option.

* is your dog desexed? up to date on vaccinations? worming? flea and heartworm treatment?

* have you had a recent vet check and have a full report on health status and suitable treatment for any health issues?

* is your dog micro-chipped and registered with the Council?

*  does he/ she need a dental or grooming?

All of the above need to be dealt with before considering rehoming.

* have you asked family, friends, work colleagues, your vet for a referral to a possible home?

* take some really good photos, at least 1 head shot looking at the camera and at least 1 full body shot

* collect details - breed type, sex, coat type, weight etc

* write a story about your dog and his/ her personality, including where he used to sleep, house-training, behaviour with other dogs, cats and small animals, attitude with people, strangers, children and all of his/ her good points.

When you have achieved this

* approach rescue groups, sites, such as Petrescue to advertise you dog.

* DO NOT list as free-to-good-home - free can signify worthless to some and attract people not interested in giving a home but for something quite repugnant.

* email me with ALL of the above done and ready for more questions

* you will need to seriously consider the vetting of phone calls and emails from potential homes - listen carefully, ask lots of questions, ask for a home visit to check things for yourself, arrange a meet and careful introduction with any other 'pet' family members.

* give yourself plenty of time to make such a huge decision.

I will deal with some of these excuses soon......

Rocky - desperate for care!!!!

ROCKY is a sad boy...stuck without a home and such a sweet boy...how sad....please consider a nice little foster...

NAME: Rocky MEET AT: Ingleside
AGE/SEX: 10yrs + / M CONTACT: Monika
BREED: Maltese X NUMBER: 9486 3133

Rocky is one of those sad dogs who came from the pound in a very neglected state. He has had a hair cut, dental and we got rid of the fleas. he is such a gentle easy boy. He is social with other dogs, great with cats and is the type of dog who would sit quietly on your lap. Mind you, Rocky has not known what it is like to live inside. He sits outside and shivers until you actually pick him up and bring him in. He is a lovely easy boy who would cope being left alone for longer periods. He has a non-shedding coat. He comes desexed, C5 vaccinated, heartworm free and microchipped. His adoption cost is $300. For further details email Monika@DoggieRescue.com.

An issue to consider - the WHOLE pet industry

I have lost many hours sleep despairing at the watse of life that is the tail end of the pet industry and what could and should be done to change things. A petition is being circulated that I would urge all to read, consider and sign (hopefully). There is SO much wrong that goes on un-checked and un-regulated, it's time to make changes. Please take the time to consider.....

Old dogs, like our shoes, are comfortable. They might be a bit out of shape and a little worn around the edges, but they fit well.

What can YOU do?

Help reduce the number of dogs wandering the streets, surrendered to the pound, dumped in the bush or even worse, left to survive uncared for alone in the backyard. You can, everyone can help.

1. Never buy an animal from a Petshop or the Classifieds.

Why? To stop impulse buys. To halt the trade in backyard bred animals of unknown parentage and health by unregistered greedy breeders. To resist buying an animal without due consideration, research and trial periods.

2. Don't buy a designer cross breed puppy.

Why? They are mutts not breeds. They have no genetic history or vet clearances for genetic problems. They can take the worst aspects of 2 or more breeds combine and exacerbate them - both in health and temperament. There is no such breed as a Cavoodle! BTW I love mutts, but we don't need to 'make' more of them. It's not fair to them.

3. Encourage people to adopt from a pound, shelter or rescue group.

Why? To help keep them from being killed for no good reason. Give them what they truly deserve, a second chance at a decent life.

4. Neuter or spey all pets.

Why? To avoid accidental pregnancy. As a way of preventing behaviour problems like aggression in males. Preventing health problems like pyometra and mammary cancer in females and testicular cancer in males. Of the females I have here, 3 were not desexed at a young age and 2 have mammary cancer, 1 has been lucky.

5. Actively support your local or favourite pound, shelter or rescue group in whatever way you can.

NOTE: they MUST be responsibly desexing animals before rehoming! Many a BYB will get new 'stock' to breed with from pounds that don't desex. I would rather a dog killed humanely than suffer life as a breeding machine!

Why? We need all the support we can get.

EVERYONE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE..............EVERYONE!

Dedicated to the Rescuers

One by one, they file past my cage

Too old, too worn, too broken, no way
Way past his time, he can't run and play
Then they shake their heads slowly and go on their way

A little old man, arthritic and sore
It seems I am not wanted anymore
I once had a home, I once had a bed
A place that was warm, and where I was fed
Now my muzzle is grey, and my eyes slowly fail
Who wants a dog so old and so frail?
My family decided I didn't belong
I got in their way; my attitude was wrong
Whatever excuse they made in their head
Can't justify how they left me for dead
Now I sit in this cage, where day after day

The younger dogs all get adopted away
When I had almost come to the end of my rope
You saw my face, and I finally had hope
You saw through the grey and the legs bent with age
And felt that I still had life beyond this cage
You took me home, gave me food and a bed

And shared your own pillow with my poor tired head
We snuggle and play and you talk to me low
You love me so dearly, you want me to know
I may have lived most of my life with another
But you outshine them with a love so much stronger
And I promise to return all the love I can give
To you, my dear person, as long as I live
I may be with you for a week or for years
We will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears
And when the time comes that God deems I must leave
I know you will cry and your heart it will grieve
And when I arrive at the Bridge all brand new

My thoughts and my heart will still be with you
And I will brag to all that will hear
Of the person who made my last days
oh, so dear
