Welcome to Semaphore, a fledgling literary magazine.

Given the sheer number of small webzines that exist, you'd be forgiven for wondering why someone would want to start up a new one. Surely there's no need for another one?

The thing is, there's always a need. Whether you're an author with a story that's aching to be heard, or a reader who's looking for something exciting to fill your head with, you'll always be after somewhere new. The internet is growing day by day, and the publishing world has to keep up with it.

Also, if you're one of those author types and your story gets accepted, you'll receive payment which, I have been told, is sufficient to buy a decent cup of coffee around my local campus. Or a hot chocolate. With marshmallows. And that is nothing to be sniffed at.

Here at Semaphore we hope to bring you stories that aren't the usual fare; something out of the ordinary, something that will stick with you long after you've clicked the little X at the corner of the page. We plan to offer a selection of short stories, poems, essays and comics from a variety of genres and all with that extra bite that separates them from other works.
