A SELECT FLORA OF SOUTH AFRICA

Images by Bihrmann

It is amazing how a nation can be so floristically rich yet so floristically unknown!  With a range in ecological zones the diversity of the flora of South Africa remains relatively unknown to the rest of the world. Particularly neglected are the lower plants characterized by the mosses and those lower tracheophytes that are often grouped together under the genre of "Fern-allies".

Overview of images:

Bihrmann has done a remarkable job of imaging what is a new and overwhelming world of mosses and lower plants that he has not encountered before. We definitely owe him our thanks for the sharing of the images shown.

While many images are shots of colonies of plants, many images offer some detail for the discriminating eye. Each image is carefully examined and tested for clarity and possible enhancement before being placed on this site. I have also made some enlargements, particularly with the mosses, in order to add depth to the general colony shots provided. These images will tend to be fuzzy or otherwise not as clearly defined as the unaltered images. It is my hope that such though lacking clarity may provide some substance to the appreciation of those images takened.
