The 21st March 1985 witnessed a massacre of an unprecedented scale driven by a racist and oppressive ideology and system called ‘Apartheid’. While there was an International outcry to the Langa Massacre of Uitenhage, the number of those who lost their lives on this day still remains unknown. Innocent mourners peacefully marched insolidarity to a funeral of those who lost their lives while protesting against grave oppressive conditions. These mourners were violently massacred and systematically gunned down by the Apartheid State. Many survived the brutal carnage; some escaped after being viciously left for dead in mortuaries while others were discarded of in plastic sheets. Through engaging these survivors and witnesses ‘You Are my Witness’ begins to explore the history of the Langa Massacreof Uitenhage, 1985.
