(From the Statesman Examiner) -Pullman continues its dominance in Great Northern- Pullman won impressively twice last weekend to annex the regular season Great Northern League championship and garner top seed an an opening round bye into the District 7 2A Tournament that gets started Friday afternoon at East Valley High School. PHS (18-2, 14-0) downed Lakeside 75-55 in impressive fashion Saturday night at home. The win for third-ranked Pullman was their 16th straight. Fred Peete, the GNL scoring champion, finished the regular season and his first--and last--in the league with a 37-point outburst. He was 13 of 25 from the floor. It was the senior's seventh 30-point game of the season. After forging a 17-13 first quarter lead, Pullman outscored fourth-ranked Lakeside (17-3, 11-3) 28-20 in the second quarter. Ben Haynes added 17 points for Pullman. Greg Smith led Lakeside with 17 points. Jarred Tikker added 14. Pullman blasted Deer Park 74-47 Friday night on the road. Isaiah Sanders scored eight of his 18 points in the third quarter as PHS went on a 24-12 run on the Stags. Peete added 17 for Pullman. Stein had 17 for the Stags. Lakeside, the no. 2 seed to District, edged Riverside 53-50 on Friday behind Smith's 21 points, 13 of those in the second half. Riverside led 48-42 with four minutes left before LHS roared from be-hind. Chewelah finishes regular season strong. Chewelah secured the third seed to the District tournament by beating GNL doormat Newport 84-36 and easing past Medical Lake 63-43 Saturday night on the road. In the win over ML, Chewelah broke from a 10-all first quarter tie and outscored the Cardinals 22-8 in the second quarter. Andy Belzer fueled the run with three three-pointers in the second quar-ter. Chewelah (14-6, 10-4), ranked no. 10 in the latest Class 2A poll, collared 22 offensive rebounds. Belzer led the way with 18 points. Back-court mate Ryan Feist added 15. In the rout over Newport, Chewelah pounded the boards, pulling down 26 offensive rebounds. Belzer had 15 points and Mitch Hagen chipped in with 13 to lead Cougar scoring. Colville secured the no. 6 and final spot to District by holding off home-standing Newport 50-44 Saturday night. Colville hit 6 of 14 three-pointers and got 13 points from senior guard Phil Bradeen. Mike Metzger led Newport (0-20, 0-14) with 16 points, 12 rebounds and three blocked shots. Winless Grizzlies on 28-game losing skid. The Grizzlies will open the 2003/04 season with a 28-game losing streak. In games last Tuesday night, Riverside pummeled Deer Park 71-38 behind the combined 36 points, 11 rebounds and 11 steals of Buddy and Weston Wood. Colville beat Medical Lake 45-39, using a 14-8 fourth quarter edge to pick up the home win. DISTRICT Pullman and second place Lakeside draw opening round byes to the District 7 2A Tournament at East Valley High School. PHS and LHS will play Saturday night in a winner-to-state game. The double elimination tournament (after loser-out opening round games) continues next week. At stake are three berths to the State 2A Tournament March 12-15 at the Sun Dome in Yakima. No. 3 seed Chewelah will face no. 6 Colville at 4:30 p.m. Friday at EVHS in loser-out action. The Indians have lost badly on two previous occasions this season to Chewelah. Riverside (12-8, 6-8) will play Deer Park (10-10, 6-8) in another opening round, loser-out game Friday. That game gets underway at 8 p.m. |
