While spirited, well-arranged sets of Irish tunes are one trademark of Third Reel, they also feature engaging, creative performances of songs from Ireland, as well as England, Scotland and elsewhere. The camaraderie of Janine's fiddle and Peter's concertina and accordion, combined with Sean's solid guitar and bouzouki, make for a sound that sits comfortably, and agreeably, between traditional and contemporary styles.

-Janine gravitated toward traditional/Celtic music via Cape Breton dance, and in the past couple of years has eagerly embraced the Irish fiddle style. She also appears on several tracks of a CD of Latin, folk and jazz music by Natasha Wood and Matt Gordon.

-Peter originally played piano accordion -- his grandfather got him started on it -- before developing an interest in Irish and contra dance music, which inspired him to take up anglo concertina and diatonic accordion. He has often played at contra dances, especially those at MIT.

-Sean took up traditional music back in the Ford Administration, and is an enthusiast of both the song and instrumental traditions of Ireland, Scotland and England. He is a member of the Boston Celtic Music Fest board of directors and serves as a co-organizer and regular host for the BCMFest "Celtic Music Monday" series at Club Passim.

Janine and Sean began playing as a duo in 2007, with performances at BCMFest, Club Passim's Campfire Festival, the Oasis Coffeehouse and the "Concerts at the Captain's House" series in Agawam, among others. Much to their delight, Peter joined up in the spring of 2009, and the trio looks forward to sharing their love of traditional and folk music in concert, dance and other settings.
