Get Your Own Scratch

Welcome, a thread in the Alpha Forum has drawn to our attention that maybe, we need a club for all users starting their own line, "premi" of course. Here is the thread that started it all:

http://www.showdog.com/login/philboard_read.aspx?id=124724

We're just starting, so there may be many changes in layout, format and everything. E-mail your questions and comments to us at Liberty Hills on SD.

Thanks, and good luck to those starting their own line!

May Specialties & New Members

Trivia has been posted and there are 5 questions. In order to get the prize, I'm thinking possibly either a trophy or a small payout, you must get all of them right! Please do NOT use Google.com or any search engine.

I'd like to welcome a few of our new members:  Emerald SpiresOutback Kelpies II, Cranberry Bog Kennel, and NV Me!

There is a post in the Alpha Dog Forum for specialties:

http://www.showdog.com/login/philboard_read.aspx?id=170792

Whoever, by the end of 2008, sponsors the most specialties will recieve a $500 payout!

Also, Showdog will be down for an extended period of time sometime between midnight and 6AM on Tuesday, April 29th for some database updates. Jeff's post:

April 2008

Oh wow, it's been a long while and I am terribly sorry for not keeping better track of this club. I know it's a bit late for New Year's resolutions but I hope that this resurrection of the Line Breeders club will turn it into a club that is:

- Active: with weekly or monthly updates from our users

- Helpful: giving advice to those just starting out

- Fun: perhaps a few games or challenges

At the End of 2007

Almost another year, and where are we today? Send in your highest SOP or the pup you are most proud of, and they'll go onto the new page "At the End of 2007". Next year, if you're still hanging around SD, you can see how much your line as improved!

Also, please welcome our new Weimaraner source-breeder, Conchobhar.

I'd like to apologize for the inconvience. If anyone wants to join, please PM me again at Liberty Hills.

Dogs will be dying as of Nov. 1st, 2007:

Life-span has also been adjusted for each breed to match the life-span in RL.

But the most important suggestion from admin that will affect most of us is this:

He plans to improve the source-dog quality. I have already voiced my opinion against it, but you all should also have your own say, so remember to read this thread:

http://www.showdog.com/login/philboard_read.aspx?id=157150

As of now, that is all that needs to be reportated. :)

A Few COI Sites

I've Googled a few sites, though most are targeted for at least high school reading level, possibly college, hopefully it will clear things up a bit. I am still trying to learn, and if I come across a site, or if I figure a way to explain without hurting my own head and getting confused, I will let you all know.

Definetion of COI: How realted two animals, in this case showdogs, are. F is the letter that represents the chances that the offspring will have the two same genes, both from one grandparent.

For example, Bob has (AA), and Susie has (aa). Their son, John, has (Aa). Bob divorces and has a second child with a wife who as (aa), a daughter, Libby, with (Aa). John and Libby fall in love. They have a daughter. Their daughter has 25% of inherieting AA (both from her grandfather, Bob).

   A  a
 A  AA  Aa
 a  Aa  aa

Another example from: http://www.medterms.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=3953

Take a first-cousin mating. First cousins share a set of grandparents. For any particular gene in the male, the chance that his female first cousin inherited the same gene from the same source is 1/8. Further, for any gene the man passes to his child, the chance is 1/8 that the woman has the same gene and ½ that she transmits that gene to the child so 1/8 X ½ = 1/16. Thus, a first-cousin marriage has a coefficient of inbreeding F =1/16.

Changes for SD

As many of you already know, there are major changes set for October. One of which may impact us, source breeders, greatly. I'd also like to say farewell to Danielle (Puppy0215) and to GSL ( GermanShepherdLove12345 ) who are both taking a short break from source breeding. Though I am honered to say that they both have agreed to continue being members.

Here is the thread from Jeff: http://www.showdog.com/login/philboard_read.aspx?id=151654

Inbreeding Penalties

The ideal level of linebreeding/inbreeding in dogs will be 5%. Any inbreeding above 5% based on the Wright Coefficient for four generations back of a dog will have a negative impact on its quality. We’re going to finally add it and we need to pick a number so we’re going with 5%.

You can find out more about the Wright Coefficient via Google but if you aren’t mathematically inclined, you may have trouble understanding it. Basically it refers to how likely a dog is to receive similar genetic material from both parents.

Inbred dogs will also have shorter life spans.

Comments: We’ve scrapped this before after having trouble coming to an arrangement that satisfied everyone. If we asked 10 different people, we’d hear 12 different opinions of how inbreeding impacts dogs. We have to pick a number that accepts the fact that some inbreeding does help a dog and we’ve gone with 5%.

Complexity of Wright's Coefficient

About the most heated feedback I have received has been regarding Wright’s Coefficient.

We're not explaining the intricacies of Wright's Coefficient tonight because that's not what the thread if for. Basically, it's a percentage chance that an allele will be duplicated in offspring. We're not using it for that; we're using it to apply a numerical amount to inbreeding. You are more than welcome to learn about it if you would like to understand it more but that’s not required.

Honestly, it would make more sense for me to leave it hidden and let users figure out what the ideal IBC is. That would make it more realistic, stop anybody from ever calculating the IBC (thus preventing the jealously of those who don’t know how to right now), and provide another aspect of strategy to the game.

I'm saying that we will go with a specific IBC in the spirit of providing as much information as possible and allowing user input. However, that does create more questions for people who do not know how to calculate the IBC.

This was not meant to eliminate non-engineers from the site. I am going into detail on it to get input and add some transparency to it. This is not a bad thing.

I'm referring people to Google because we don't have a help center page on it yet, nothing more.

One question that concerns me quite a bit, will the IBC be stated on each dog's page?
Yes, it will.

Does it mean that the gene pool will be smaller, since they have a life-span?

Yes, but that’s not the intention.

Will there be any grandfather clause for existing in-bred dogs?

Dogs born before October 1st won’t be impacted but their offspring will be.

We have such a wide variety of people playing the game, so wouldn't this give the older, more knowledgable people an advantage?

Yes, all aspects of strategy are meant to give people who are able to strategically plan an advantage.

Will inbreeding be listed on the dog's page?

Yes.

Also will the inbreeding of the puppies show on the breeding page

That’s a great idea. I’ll see about adding it.

I'm So Sorry!

This is Libs, and I'm sincerely sorry for not keeping up with this club. I really meant to, it's just RL, yeah I know, not much of an excuse. But I hope to get this back up and running hopefully adding more things a such. September Specialties should be coming soon. :)

It's that time again...

Ready for another month of specialties?! Well, you better be! If any member is willing to help out by either sponsering a speciality or by adding payouts, we will be forever grateful.

Does your pup have what it takes?

Over on the navigation bar, you may notice a new tab "Featured Pups". Do your puppies have an exceptionally high SOP? Check to see if you may land a spot as the highest SOP for a line breed in a certain generation! Send any applications to Liberty Hills @ Showdog.com, just include the link to the dog as well as the SOP.

Questions / Articles

We were thinking of creating an FAQ with multiple answers from different kennels, so if you have any questions that you think should be put there please e-mail us at Liberty Hills. Also, if you have answers to some of the posted questions, the please e-mail us with your answer and the question.

Also, if you would like to write an article on a topic that will help new breeders start their own line, please e-mail it to us at Liberty Hills. Please save a copy on your computer incase it gets lost, or something happens to it.

Thanks again.
