Generation One SOPs... |
|
|
I'm on generation one and my puppies SOPs are lower than the parents. Is there something wrong? Is there something I should do different?
07.02.07 - Lighting Star Kennels
Answers -
No there isn't anything wrong with you or your dogs. It's just the way it goes. Some dogs that you breed will be a better SOP than the parents, but not usually. In my kennel, my s are a far lower SOP than their parents, but my boys exceed them. It's just the way it goes at first. Even in the more advanced generation (ex: 28) you can still get very low SOPs from dogs who are matched up to have higher SOP-ed puppies. Usually situations get worse before they get better, right? I've found it's the same with my breeding.
There are a few things you can try to do differently. For one, you can breed two normal, ok, or ugly dogs together and see what you get. I've found that that method can be rewarding, with getting a good dog. Amazing dogs don't always have amazing puppies. You can try different matches and see what works for you.

Sourcies and Current Gen.. |
|
|
If I breed a source dog to a current champion and then use those resulting pups to start my line, is that still source breeding? Can I cross those pups back into my sourcies to get a better dog faster? I am having a hard time finding suitable males, which is why I am wondering.

How Long Does It Take... |
|
|
How long does it take to get from a starter to show quality?
02.20.07 - B Collies Rock
Answers -
It depends on the breed and how many generations show quality is. As of right now, I've bred 5 generations since August. That's pretty much 7 months. So let's see here:
7 / 5 = 1.5
That means about a month and a half for each generation. If your breed is at 26 generations:
26 * 1.5 = 39 months = 3 years and 3 months
Of course, that is if you do it the way I do, breeding each bitch 3 times and so forth. If you breed less, or keep fewer pups, it might take you less time, vis versa as well.

What Is The Point... |
|
|
What is the point of source breeding? Do you get anything out of it?
02.20.07 - B Collies Rock
Answers -
Well I don't know about everyone else but this is what "I" get out of it. I get a sense of accomplishment that you don't get from just breeding from established lines. When I finally "arrive" I will know it was my hard work and dedication that payed off. Yes I have some outside sources thrown in here and there but for the most part that first homebred will be all "mine" and I'll be able to smile and say wow I did it. Also in some breeds on SD there are problem areas in certain traits. If a person is very careful they may be able with their line breeding bring in some "new " to fix that problem area for the whole breed. For me those are what make source breeding fun and enjoyable and well worth it

SOPs or Traits... |
|
|
Is it better to simply keep breeding for a higher SOP by using higher SOP studs (or bitches, either way) or to focus in improving individual traits one at a time?
02.19.07 - SureShot
Answers -
As we know, SOPs are not the be all and end all in the game. I try to improve on the most important traits for the breed. Sometimes the best SOP pups have decent numbers in the traits I want to work on, sometimes they don't. Overall, the pups I keep to breed have the best or next to best SOPs though. Mostly, right now, in Gen 6 and 7 in Newfs and Gen 4 and 5 in Flatties, I am still working on getting the red out...LOL, sounds like a Visine ad...LOL.

Is It Still Your Line... |
|
|
Is it still your line, if:
- You buy a male dog that was bred by a different breeder and has been used at least for one breeding
Is it still your line?
02.19.07 - Roaming Tazi Kennels
Answers -
That is a personal preference. Every kennel has their own idea on when you can cross out and still have it be your line.
My rule when crossing out is the dog has to be a starter and have never produced pups with a 'Non-Junobe dog.' But thats just me. Talk to a few other kennels about it and decide which one you think works best.

For me personally, even though I love line breeding and I have patience for it I don't have THAT much patience. For me I started bringing outside sources into my line. But not excessively. When I have an area that looks like a bad trait is getting locked in or I can't seem to improve on I bring in an outside source with that particular trait to "fix" my bad area. I'll use it for a breeding or two sometimes more if it's a particular stubborn trait to get fixed. Then go back to breeding just in my line. But as Junobe said, each person does it differently and there really is no wrong way to do it.

I was very interested to read of peoples differing views on linebreeding and have researched the subject a little on the Web. The above link is to an excellent site which explains it in great detail, and is the one I will be following in Azawakhs and Kooikerhondjes. Basically, all you need to start are 2 females and 1 male. So my first breeding, at great cost, could not accurately be called “line breeding” as I used different stud and did not keep the required sisters/brother. However as I am still at Gen 0 its not too bad a mistake and I can start again. So, Roaming Tazi, if the introduced dog is not related in a specific way, then no its not technically your line.

Assuming The End Goal... |
|
|
Assuming the end goal is a 100% SOP, which method do you find best to take: breeding for consistent quality over all, or for tens and then working on the numbers in between?
01.17.07 - Soise Kennel
Answers -
Personally, I would do the first. I breed out all the reds and oranges and I have a goal for each Gen. For example, in Gen 4 for all Bitches, they can't have any red, can have only 2 or less Oranges, and 4 or less Yellows. The requirements are set higher and higher as the Generations pass. I FH all the ones that don't met the requirement.
01.17.07 - Liberty Hills
My strategy is much like Liberty's. I aim to breed out the reds and oranges first. The thing I do differently is to work on any blues that develop as each generation comes along. For example, I may choose to keep a pup that has a red or orange if it has a stat from 7 to 13 in an important trait such as head.

How Do I Get Started... |
|
|
How do I get started in source/line breeding?
01.17.07 - Regal Quarry
Answers -
Buy/Make Source dogs and bitches for what breed you want.
2. Match up your dogs and bitches into what you think will be good breedings.
3. Push the bright, shiny "Breed Button"
4. Five days and two hours later you will have the first generation of your new line.
5. Repeat steps 2-4.
This is the bare minimum of what you have to do. Different people have different techniques for choosing their breedings, how they track, what they keep, etc. I think that is the general idea of this club. That way we can discuss the things we have tried, what has worked and what hasn't. Keep in mind; the satisfaction in starting your own line is personal. You will probably not have a finishable dog in one month. But when that litter settles and the red stat is green now, boy, that feels great. The important thing to remember is have fun!!

How Much Inbreeding... |
|
|
How much inbreeding should my program consist of?
01.17.07 - Regal Quarry
Answers -
So far, I have found that breeding siblings gives me better results than breeding unrelated pairs has. I planned to outbreed in Gen 4 and up but the outcross I was most excited about produced the worst Gen 5 pups I had to date. So for the most part, I plan to do sibling breedings with an occasional outcross to assess the quality. At least that is my strategy for now...

What Quality Of Food... |
|
|
What quality of food should my new line dogs be put on? Does it make a difference?
01.17.07 - Regal Quarry
Answers -
Food does not affect the genetic quality of the dog. Only the show stats. My advice is if your not going to be showing your dogs for a few generations, go with Old Boy. It's cheaper, so you can have more dogs in your breeding program with less cost.
Just remember to change back to Pet House when your SOP is show quality.

There are always plenty of new users with new starters. Try searching the posts for "Selling Starters" or "Starters For Sale" or even starting your own post in the Dogs Wanted forum.
