Reading Packet - Finish Overdue

Friday, March 14, 2008

Read all weekend!

Do you have to catch up on your vocabulary?

This is a great weekend to finish that fifth data chart.

Logical fallacies packets were collected today, and we finished our debates.  Way to go Jake and Nick, who argued "well", using the most fallacies!  Monday, we will party - to start our next unit:  Decades of the 20th Century.

Science Fair:  does anyone at home have an idea?  What question can you try to answer?  Review your introduction sheet and find an idea...

Music:  Are you all set for your composition project?

Spanish:  Study your words.  Miss Melissa will have Spanish at any time next week to make up for today's class.

We are missing several things from class this past week.  Please check your belongings to see that you do not have the following things:  a set of earphones, a memory stick, class calculator(s), Samurai, The Lady of Ch'iao Kuo, Great Whale Shark, and the Complete Calvin and Hobbes Collection.  Please return these items.

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Way to go!  Poetry night was a success.  I had several compliments from parents, teachers, and other students.  Very impressive poetry!  Each student (or family) may have one booklet.  We did not make extras.

Great logical fallacies debates today.  We will finish the next two debate teams tomorrow.  I will also be collecting your packets (with completed found examples) and your debate fallacy finds.

Stay on track with your vocabulary!

*Those of you traveling to Ursinus on March 29th - you have about a month to finalize your projects.  Make sure you continue to do what needs to be done to make a good showing at the competition.

English:  Read.  I am closing out the 100 Book Challenge Review baskets tomorrow.  Please return the books and evaluation sheets.   We will be going to present and learn about the company (tentatively) on April 16th.  Keep up with your vocabulary words.  Stay well above 80 percent on all sections.   Hopefully, biographies (written in your nicest cursive handwriting) will be finished and turned in tomorrow.  If you need to catch up with your Literature Circle Group, do so tonight.  To Kill A Mockingbird and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry both finished Chapter 2, I believe.  We will finish your Collected Works (poetry) good copies tomorrow.  Again, please make sure to mark the date for the next ECS.  It's a grade and a requirement.

Keep an eye on the weather reports for delayed opening, etc., ...but do not count on it!

Language Arts:  Read for 100 Book Challenge - Please bring your books from the Purple and Bronze baskets we have been evalutating for the 100 BC Company.  Did you complete 5 words this week in Get A Clue?  Did you keep up with your expected vocabulary workbook units?  We have been working in class to bring your I-Search Biographies to publication.  All must be turned in using your best cursive handwriting.  Hopefully, everyone can turn in final copies by Monday (again, PSSA's put a wrench in our plans for 8th graders!).

History:  Chapter 19 Review is due tomorrow.  If you are in 8th grade, I will grant you an extension until Monday since much of your independent work time was taken up by the PSSA Writing Exam.  (Good work!)  Everyone is expected to present their displays and research (including data charts, process papers, and annotated bibliographies) tomorrow at 1:00.

Please remember to turn in any outstanding sponsorship forms.  We appreciate all of your efforts to support our program!

We have a field trip scheduled on March 11th - a poetry workshop in Philadelphia.  Please note March's ECS on your calendar.  It is a mandatory event!  Poetry night!!!

Junior Scholastic will be collected on Monday for a grade.

FYI:  Monday we will be beginning two new units - New Lit Circles in L.A. and "Logical Fallacies" in History.  Please try to hold on to any magazines and newspapers to share next week.  Thanks.

You should have begun your fifth (and last!) data chart for your I-Search project.  We have scheduled a final trip to the library this coming Monday for I-Search research.  Soon, we will be moving to the presentation phase!

We have begun to make weekly after school plans to help students plan for long term projects and short term assignments.  We are working on those time management skills that can really help to reduce stress.  Check it out at home and share with a parent to get input and feedback.

Spanish tomorrow - study your vocabulario (days of the week, months, greetings, questions, numbers, colors).

If you have not yet turned your History Day $, if your team was selected to go to Ursinus, please do so.  If you have not yet turned in your $3 for the trifold boards, please do so.

Welcome back!  We hope you all had a wonderful time with your families.  Here are some updates...

Today, we welcomed two visiting nurses from Montgomery County Community College.  They spoke about basic personal hygiene (washing every day, taking care of your feet, deoderant options, teeth care, acne care, and sleep).  This would be a great time to talk with your parent about the suggestions the nurses had for us today.  This would also be a great time to take a shower...

This week, we have two field trips:  Thursday we are going to Hope Lodge.  Friday, we are off to the Mercer Museum.  This ends our Colonial Studies field work.   Next week, we will be wrapping up our unit with group visual presentations, colonial architecture, and, of course!, a unit test.

We are still missing trip money from three of you.  Please get that to us as soon as possible.

Architecture:  Remember, you should be on the look out for Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian columns as well as Romanesque and Gothic arches.  They're everywhere...  Take a picture for your architecture studies packet.  New additions coming...

Read for 100 Book Challenge.  Remember, we are expecting you to fill out your Genre Bingo cards!  You must fill out your Challenge form correctly (including page numbers and levels).  Also, we think reading one level below your level is GREAT!

Committees are tomorrow.  There are two people who are missing your All About Me posters - turn them in tomorrow.

A reminder about writing essays for Language Arts class -   Generally speaking, if you take an assignment home to type or finish up, please DO NOT GET HELP from a parent or anyone else.  We are all learning to develop the craft of writing.  If you get help, you are developing your parent's craft, but not your own.  This includes typing.  Do the best you can.  Come prepared for class.  That's it.  We'll work on it in class.  This is how I can help you best!!!

Monday, October 8, 2007

Well, Miss Julie is mostly back in business.

History:  The entire Medieval Times packet is due Wednesday before the trip to the Renaissance Faire.  Check the forecast for Wednesday.  Good news:  It may be cooler.  Bad news:  They're calling for bouts of drizzle.  No biggie, right?  The event is rain or shine, according to their site.  You'll want to dress appropriately.  Costumes are encouraged, if you have one. Chaperones and students - we are leaving exactly at 8:40.  In fact, if your group is here earlier, you might want to leave even earlier to catch every minute.  Are your money/slip in?

Work on a renaissance costume.  Float some ideas around with your parents.  Check out the ideas we sent home - or use your own creativity.  Tomorrow, we will assign the "famous people" representatives:  Queen Elizabeth, William Shakespeare, Sir Frances Drake...  We'll also make sure you all have a person in mind to "be".

Tomorrow is committees.  Come prepared to work hard - the usuals, minus Andrew whom I have a special plan for!, will be working in the Butterfly Garden so dress appropriately.

Read for one line.  Keep in mind:  nonfiction not only counts, but is encouraged!  Anything you read for I-Search, log it in!

Spanish:  Review your words.

I-Search:  Continue to work on your first data chart.

Great job on the CAR WASH:  $333.  Wow, that will really help!
