The glorious days of Scottish Music Hall and Variety Theatre

From the President's Diary - Mr Johnny Beattie

SMHVTS Hon. President  "Mr Glasgow", Johnny Beattie

Looking forward to this year’s Annual Glasgow Lunch on Sunday,12th April.

Guest of honour this year, a great friend, Irene Cormack Along with hubby George, Cormack and Sharp enhanced so many great variety shows over the years. Make it a date!

I hope Irene tells us of their meeting with Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn on one of the many cruise liners on which they entertained. I can hardly wait.

George himself, a mad keen golfer, was a valued member of Scottish Variety’s answer to the R. and A., it was called H.U.G.S. the ‘Heid Up Golfing Society’. Along with pals Tom and Jack Alexander and dear old Hector Nicol we were founder members. We did for golf what Ronnie Corbett did for basketball. Back in the seventies there were many pro – celebrity golf games held for charity and to my surprise and pleasure I was invited to quite a few, several involving Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. Some serious name dropping going on here!

I recall one particular Pro – Am at Turnberry, venue of this years Open Championship. During the game, on came a thunderstorm with torrential rain and flooding. I found myself trudging through deep puddles alongside the legendary Douglas Bader. We were chatting away about the turn in the weather and he suddenly said "I don’t know what all the fuss is about old boy, my feet are bone dry." What a man!

This year of ‘Homecoming Scotland’ we celebrate a very special occasion. The 250th Anniversary of the birth of the great man himself ‘Our Rabbie’ the man who inspired that great Scottish institution ‘The Burns Supper’!

Chic Murray once spoke at one along with the minister, the late Jimmy Currie. Chic’s opening line was classic. He said" Tomorrow you can tell all your friends you were at a Burns Supper, and as well as haggis you got Chic and Currie!".

Let’s hear it for Rabbie!

Happy for Tabs
