Tayside Travels Again

Sunday 21st June
After setting off from Dundee, we had a short stop to pick up a stranger with a beard oops sorry it was our Chairman Mr D.Pringle.
We then headed off to Ayr on a glorious morning to visit Mr Light Green himself Willie Peacock.
I am sure like myself the other members were very much impressed with the birds.  As Willie had all his birds in the two flights  it was clear to see the strengths of the stud,
But we all agreed the birds came second to Mrs Peacock's home-made ham soup & trifle .
A very big thanks for their Hospitality

Our second visit was to Alastair Easdon so we set off from Ayr for about 45 minutes, having arrived we went straight to the bird shed which Alastair has increased in a big way giving himself much more space and possibly more room for breeding pairs,
He clearly has improved with the out crosses from Switzerland I am sure we will see his name amongst the top awards, he put up several pairings
and has developed a lovely style in his birds.
Not one's for refusing a cuppa we sat down in the conservatory to tea and some sandwiches laid out by Mrs Easdon, again we would like to thank them both for their time and hospitality.
After a long, but, very enjoyable day, the weary travellers headed home.

Tayside BS  Aviary visit to Anne Guthrie

Thursday 21st May.
Evening visit to Anne Guthrie.
Having come through a lashing storm we arrived at Glenfarg Cottage to a lovely evening in very nice surroundings.
Once again, we had a good turnout of members who were very impressed with Anne's set-up being housed in a very large converted barn. I am sure anyone that visits will see that the quality of Anne's stock has greatly improved over the short time since she started exhibiting.
A very warm thank you  Anne from T.B.S. for the gracious hospitality and allowing us to visit.

have to contend with.

I had the pleasure of judging the Wigtownshire C&ABS show 19th October for the second time, having judged their first show four years ago.
It's quite an event, a bright spacious hall with easy access and ample parking. The show incorporates as well as budgerigars, canaries and foreign birds, an additional attraction was a display of fancy pigeons
The budgerigar entry was excellent 236 birds with just under 200 benched, this means the club can attain bronze patronage fom the BS next year.
Best budgerigar was R.Nawarauckas with a skyblue
cock.
Best young bird - R.Nawarauckas
Best any age  -   R.Nawarauckas.(BIS)
Best opposite sex YB - R.Nawarauckas.

Tayside BS & Aberdeen BS Inter-Club Show

Sunday 19th October, Tayside B.S. travelled up to Aberdeen B.S. for our intercity match.
Both clubs were delighted with the support they received from the members, a
good turnout of 164 birds were benched, which kept D.Pringle from Tayside and J.Benzie from Aberdeen very busy, there were some very good birds in good condition.
Looking after the paper work, Mr & Mrs W.Stephen had the task of adding up the scores.
Like last year Tayside were once again victorious but by a small margin.
During the judging, Mr Bill Couper gave a short talk on bought birds which went down well.

Results were evenly spread with the home team North Ayrshire winning the cup for most points, Dumbarton benching best bird a lutino by John Griffiths (Taffy) Taffy also won the quiz which was fairly difficult gaining eight out of twelve points closely followed with seven points by Tom McCrindle and Alister McPhail, with six points came Roy Wilson, Alister White, J Burns (the judge for the event)and Robert Pettigrew.
I won't detail the scores of the remaining members but everyone took part and none shamed themselves altogether it was a very friendly and entertaining event, and I would look forward to another of the same in the future.

EDINBURGH - MEMBER'S JUDGING COMPETITION

At Edinburgh's recent club meeting, the members were invited to have a go at judging a selection of birds provided by Willie Orr and Bill Miller. The task was to place the birds in the same order as trainee judge Bob Quigley. All members had a go, even our two new members John and Duncan, talk about getting thrown in at the deep end, it was Duncan's first meeting! It was a good night and the winner for the evening was John MacDonald.

Below are a selection of some of the birds, the winner was an outstanding Grey Green from Bill Miller, but, unfortunately it decided to sit on the floor of the cage when I tried to take a picture.

TAYSIDE BS

On setting of from Our Clubrooms on the 1st June Tayside members were greeted with a warm welcome from the
Graham & McLean Partnership,  Having a very good turnout from our members meant we had to split-up into two groups.
Spending a time in each aviary listening and having our questions answered, this Partnership certainly will get their rewards having viewed a much improved Quality throughout the varieties.
As in past visits, hospitality and the social side of conversation was very relaxed and enhanced our visit.
Many thanks also must go to Mrs Graham for a lovely spread.

AVIARY VISIT

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Edinburgh BS Aviary Visit 2008

In June  the EBS members visited the aviaries of Robert Nawarauckas (Stranraer) and Willie Peacock (Ayr).

The journey was well worth it and the weather brightened up as the day wore on.

Robert’s birdroom measures 20ft x 14ft being the main part and down to 10 ft in width, at the show training area, with no outside flight.

Instead it boasts a large inside flight with a tiled floor.  His aviary, like his garden, was immaculate.  Ventilation is provided by an extractor fan, a large overhead filter fan, two louvered windows (in the flight) and an open wired door.

Robert keeps several varieties of budgerigars but his spangles were very impressive.

(Photo's above are the Parents of the youngsters shown below)

(Quality youngsters from the aviary of Robert Nawarauckas)

His budgerigars were very steady in the flights and also when put into a show cage. Members saw for themselves the quality that Robert has managed to put into his birds, three generations of the one family being put into the training cages to show how he had managed to improve his stock.  This was the first formal visit by a budgerigar club to Robert’s aviary. He moves to Intermediate level this year.  From the quality of birds on show it is likely to be a succesful move for him.

Having seen good budgerigars, we sat for a little while in his lovely garden,

in the sunshine, with tea and sandwiches.  This is something we do well (the EBS folk like a good feed!).

After a 90 minute journey, which included popping in to see Jim Laurie and his wife-(the EBS folk like a good gab!),  we arrived in Ayr to view Willie Peacock’s aviary, most had not visited him since his move.  Homemade soup, more sausage rolls and fairy cakes awaited us -(like hobbits the EBS folk like a good second feed!).  Willie too has a fantastic garden- this time hard landscaped with lots of pots in full bloom, lots of little water features and a koi pool, with a couple of real monsters swimming around in it.

(Willie Orr thanking Willie Peacock for putting up with us)

His new aviary, while similar to the old one in layout, is much smaller. The two blues, one grey and one cinnamon green stood out from amongst his 300 greens!

(Six Light Greens sitting on a perch and if one Light Green should accidentally fall..........

there'll be few hundred more looking for a perch)

(Spot the odd one out?)

Quality birds were everywhere, all had been despotted before our arrival.Despotting is something that Willie does  constantly, for several reasons,he finds he can assess the birds much better, the cleaner mask brings with it the appearance of greater depth, also when regularly handling the birds for despotting he can quickly pick up on any troubles such as growths, lack of weight etc fortunately these occur rarely in his birds. It also makes him very efficient in the art of trimming, and he even enjoys the task!

Willie keeps cocks and hens in separate flights and the youngsters in long flight cages until they moult out.  There were some promising youngsters in that cage.  Amongst the adults there was good depth of mask in evidence, wide heads and good body size.  While there was flecking in some of the birds, Willie seems to have it under control and uses it to maintain spot size. Willie’s budgerigars were a complete contrast to Robert’s, we went from a multi coloured aviary to one of almost single colour,

 what a contrast!

The members of the EBS wish to thank both Robert and Willie, and their respective wives, for their kind hospitality, which was greatly appreciated, as well as the opportunity to look at some wonderful budgerigars.

Welcome
