Customs and Duties

Customs Control

All material brought into Schwerdt is subject to customs, duties, and import taxes. Generally, personal use items are exempt. There is a surcharge on customs, duties, and import taxes for items left undeclared.

All baggage, parcels, and carried items undergo radiographic and other electronic inspection and may be searched at entry, exit, or both. Be sure to carry cameras and film separately so it can be inspected independently.

Travelers must pay customs, duties, and taxes upon crossing the frontier.

What To Delcare

If in doubt, you should declare an item to avoid a possible surcharge. Be sure to declare all tobacco, alcohol, and other items of value. High value items brought into Schwerdt which are not also being brought out must also be declared.

Currency and other negotiable instruments over certain values, based on the purpose of visit, are subject to duty. Travelers may use the debit card function of the Reichskennkarte, called the R-karte, to avoid needing to bring large amounts currency with them. Not only is this safer and more convenient, there is no liability for duty on currency since the value remains in the traveler's deposit account.

Pets

Travelers with pets must provide veterinary certification that the pet is in good health, free from disease, and have documentation of current standard vaccinations.
