Chancellor and
Marshal of the Realm

The Chancellor and Marshal of the Realm is the head of state of the Social Republic of Schwerdt and commander-in-chief of its armed forces. In accordance with the Basic Law, he must be a member of the Military Services and have attained the sature of senior command authority (Field Marshal).

The Chancellor is elected by popular vote of all registered citizens who have attained the age of majority. An ammendment to the Basic Law in 1988 changed the term of office from ten to five years. There is no limit on the number of terms that may be served.

A professional staff in the Office of the Chancellor provide necessary services and detail to assist the Chancellor in fulfilling his obligations.

Head of State

As head of state, the Chancellor has many responsibilities. He represents Schwerdt in international relations and has the power to conclude treaties with foreign states. He also accredits and receives ambassadors and other envoys of diplomatic missions.

Determination of general policy guidelines for the state and oversight of the administration of government are the prerogative of the Chancellor. Senior civil servants and judges serve at the discretion of the Chancellor and are appointed by him. One of his most important duties is to sign legislation into law.

Commander-in-Chief

The Chancellor holds the rank of Marshal of the Realm and serves as commander-in-chief of the Military Services. In this role, he promulgates the national military strategy and provides general direction to Schwerdt's armed forces. As Marshal of the Realm, he appoints senior military officers, who serve at his discretion.
