Parliament

As established by the Basic Law, parliament in the Social Republic of Schwerdt consists of two houses. The Reichsrat (Council of the Realm) is the upper house of parliament. The lower house is the Republiksammlung (Assembly of the Republic). The system is bicameral in nature as both houses of parliament must participate in order for legislation to be written and reach the Chancellor's desk.

Council of the Realm

The Republican Ministers, including Ministers without Portfolio, the Deputy Chancellor, and representatives of the Länder (states) make up the Council of the Realm. The Länder are semi-autonomous, top-level subordinate governments within the Republic.

Assembly of the Republic

Members of the Assembly are elected by geo-populational districts of approximately 500,000 citizens. The members, who must be citizens and reside in the district they represent, serve five year terms of office. The Assembly of the Republic is the representative body.
