Breeding Program

Our breeding program continues throughout the year, with the exception of the hot months of summer.  We do not produce many (if any) litters in June, July and August as heat is a strain on pregnant does.

During the rest of the year we typically have between two and four litters each month.  Our rabbitry is enclosed so it makes kindling in the winter possible.  In addition, we place a low-wattage brood lamp over each nest box, approximately 14" above the kits.  This keeps the babies warm, even in the coldest temperatures.

Kits typically open their eyes at approximately 10 days.  At that time we line the does' cage bottom with hay and take the kits out of the nest box.  We feel this helps to keep the kits healthy and promotes them venturing to the food bowl.
