Ribbons and Egos!
We love to show our kitties! Particularily the
CHOCOLATES & LILACS!!!
When we have tiny, wee KITTENS here at SCAATYCAT....
WE DO NOT GO TO SHOWS.
THERE IS ALWAYS A RISK OF BRINGING UNWANTED CONTAMINANTS HOME WITH YOU.
WE FEEL THEY ARE FAR TOO VULNERABLE TO DISEASE, AT SUCH A YOUNG AGE.
THEY ARE, FAR TOO PRECIOUS, TO TAKE ANY UNNECESSARY RISKS!

Three kitties Championed in 2007..
Ch Prairiecats Forest Gump of Scaatycat.. a CHOCOLATE SOLID

Ch Prairiecats Its A Beautiful Day... A LILAC TABBY

Bono's Story
If love could be measured in colour, in my world, everything would be Lilac and Chocolate!
There
was no question, when Gala called me that day and offered me two of her
most precious visual lilac and chocolate kittens, that I would say, YES
YES YES!!!
By the end of the week I was holding, Forest Gump, a solid chocolate, and Bono, a lilac tabby, tightly in my arms.
They
were the most magnificent offspring yet, to be sired by the magnificent
blue tabby, Quad Gr, Ch. Prairiecat Talisman. Tally was a fabulous son
of Gr Ch Playwickey Cabot Lodge.
These
boys, along with Ch Prairiecats Changes In Latitudes, were to become
part of my foundation, for some of the best visual chocolates we would
ever see!
We showed the boys, as often as possible. They represented chocolates at the 2006 Catminster, and they were so well received.
Bono
grew into a magnificent and strong young male. He never lost his kitten
sweetness, and he was always ‘up’ for a show. Forest was a little bit
on the obstinate side, preferring to stay with his girls, at home.
We had plans to Grand, Bono.
Then something horrible and ‘oh so final’ occurred.
One
night, shortly after my husband and I had gone to bed, we were awoken
by a huge shaking, and a crash. We live in a severe earthquake zone,
and right away we swung into ‘evac mode‘! We ran to stand in the
bedroom doorframe.
The
shaking had stopped suddenly.. too suddenly for an earthquake. As my
husband fumbled for the light switch, I realized that something was
terribly wrong. The cats were all hiding, and they looked like they
were frazzled!
First
thing I saw, was that a very large, and heavy, shelf, had pulled away
from its foundation and toppled. It had stopped short of hitting the
floor but, it was laying precariously on an angle. Its fall had been
stopped by an easy chair… so we thought!
First thing we did was to take a ‘head count’.
The ‘living room cats’ all appeared to be present.. All but Bono.
He was laying on his side a few feet from the shelf.
He looked a bit stunned. He was watching us. As I approached him, he stood up and came over.
He looked at me as though to say “Mom I didn’t know it would fall!!!”
He seemed to be moving okay, but he did appear winded.
My husband righted the shelf and went back to bed.
I sat up with the cats, just to settle them down. Then, I joined him.
All things seemed okay.
The next morning everything was as it should be.
The kids all ate their normal amounts.
They pooped, and then watched me, while I cleaned their litters.
Then the strangest thing happened.. Bono vomited.. Not your normal ’hairball’ vomit, but a smelly black looking slime. NOT GOOD!
During the day,I started watching him.
Every time he ate anything, he would vomit in the same way.
At some point during that day, I also noticed that he would make mewing noises, like he was in pain..
Time to see the vet.
Our vet checked him for broken ribs and decided that, his spleen and pancreas, may have taken the blow from the shelf falling.
Just to be safe, we decided to do an entire blood/urine panel on this boy.. just to rule out, any other possibilities,
We went home with strict plans to curtail all dietary fats in his diet.
Any fats could trigger the vomiting.
Pancreatitus is a very nasty disorder, and it can be very painful.
Bono had not stopped eating, and he appeared to be really hungry.
He attempted to eat a small amount of Evo canned food. This triggered him into a painful event of vomiting.
The vomit was, that telltale black. Just like he was bleeding from within.
I got him to settle for the night, and I would await the test results.
A couple of days later, my vet called me at work.
The good news, she told me, was..
The tests did not show an elevated titters.
She also eliminated a corona virus. His liver and kidneys appeared fine.
She
felt that his blood work and symptoms, looked like that of a cat who
had suffered a severe injury to his spleen and/or pancreas.
OKAY!! What does the bad news tell us??
She said, his prognosis was not great.
This kitty was the ‘love of our lives’!
We adored him.
I broke the news to Galina and John.
They knew we were in for the battle of our lives to try to save him.
Our vet ruled out surgery.
Rest and diet were prescribed. He was given antibiotics and anti-inflammatory, pain relievers.
Three days passed.
Bono was slipping away, and there was nothing we could do to stop it.
We kept him as pain free, as we could.
Bono passed away, ten days after the accident.
It has taken me a very long time to be able to write his story.
It is still very hard.
He DID NOT DIE FROM F.I.P.
HE DID NOT DIE FROM PKD
HE DID NOT DIE FROM AN UPPER RESPIRITORY
SUPPOSSITION and INUENDO ARE VERY HARMFUL
HE DIED BECAUSE A SHELF FELL ON HIM, WHILE HE WAS PLAYING ON IT!
PLAIN AND SIMPLE!
SAD AND VERY FINAL!
THE RUMOURS CAN STOP NOW!!!
LET HIM REST IN PEACE!
His life is worth celebrating.
His pedigree is carried on, in the eyes of Forest, Bunny, Willow, and Jimmy's babies.
LOVE
Sue and Kerry

IThankyou to the late Freddie Mercury & Queen, for the song 'We Are The Champions'.
The Catminster! This ‘Cat Fanciers Association, International Cat Show’ http://www.cfainc.org/intl-show/index.html is considered ‘the Westminster’ of all cat shows!!! Cat breeders from all over the World, converged upon the San Mateo Event Centre in California, in November 2006.The show is a three-day event with twelve specialty judging rings. This show is, as much ‘spectacle’ as it is cat show! Tens of thousands of visitors, passed through the entrance gates, only to be swept up, into the amazing World of The Show Cat!
My partner and best friend, Koralee Terry, and I, had the honour of attending this fabulous show. We took three of our Canadian bred, chocolate and lilac Persians to compete. We met our Canadian compatriot, John Friesen of Prairiecat Cattery (Alberta) down at the show. Along with Roma Anthony of Wallycats Cattery, BC, we made a strong ‘CANADIAN’ Persian delegation. We all flew our flags, proudly!
There were close to 800 cats, representing every corner of the earth, in attendance!!!
We stayed at the 4Star show hotel, The Crowne Plaza. It was ’Cat Central’. The Royal Canin Petfood Company held a fabulous buffet and get together at the hotel, for exhibitors, on the Friday night of the show. The food was fantastic and it was amazing to see all of our 'cat people' struttin' their stuff.
The cat celebrities, were everywhere.
We had The Cat Writers Association, in the room next to us at the hotel. What a nice bunch!
Each cat breed, seemed to have a ’walk in’ visitors centre on every floor of the hotel.
At the show, our grooming area was decorated with Rogers Chocolates and Canadian flags!! Our large sign read, “The Best Chocolates Do Come From Victoria”… NO ARGUMENT THERE!!!! The Roger’s folk, allowed our chocolate baby boy, Ch Prairiecats Forest Gump of Scaatycat, to represent them, at the show…HOW COOL WAS THAT??!! http://www.rogerschocolates.com/index.php
We managed to give away over 200 Victorian, chocolate creams, to cat show patrons. They certainly were impressed with those ‘little Canadian cats from Victoria’!! LOL
After all “Life is like a box of chocolates.. you never know what you’re gonna get’ !!
The cats represented at this show were awesome. Some of the best in the World. We saw spectacular Long Hairs and Short Hairs.
The breed numbers were astounding..27 Exotic Shorthair kittens (40 in total)….75 Persian kittens (132 in total)…..Abyssinian 40.…Russian Blue 16..and so on. Most of the adults were already Champions and Grand Champions!
The show hall was incredible, albeit a tad overwhelming. and we were astounded at the number of booths and venders!
We met wonderful representatives of the WINN Animal Foundation (Dr Susan Little) and the Cat Fanciers Association.
We met people from FIFE (the European Cat Registrar) and The International Cat Assoc.
We chatted with new friends from Sweden, Japan, Germany and France.
We met many new American friends and learned so very much, from all of them. We renewed old friendships and met many ‘Web Friends’, for the first time, in person. It is interesting how small the ‘cat world’ has become, since the advent of the Internet.
Most of the Pet Food Companies were in attendance. I had a chance to chat with my favourites, Eaglepack and Innova Evo. They gave me some wonderful new nutritional information, which I most certainly will use in my work at Bosleys!
There were many, extra-ordinary cat artists and some fantastical new cat toys, clothing, & cat furniture exhibitors.
The famous cat photographers Chanon (USA) and Tetsu Yamazaki (Japan) were taking show photos.. WHAT GREAT MEMORIES!!
It would take at least two days to see this show.
The show committee certainly had their hands full. The agility championship had 35 entries and the Junior handling and judging, was some of the best that I have ever seen. The President of the CFA, Pam DelaBar, was the juniors judge. http://kids.cfa.org/js.html
The show was being filmed by the Gameshow Network and cameras were everywhere! The two hour long show, will be aired late in March and early in April. The hosts for the show were from Entertainment Tonight. We really got to see, just how difficult it is, to film a Cat Show.
We were benched directly behind the, elaborate, stage set. Everyone was attired in very formal dress. It was VERY EXCITING and VERY DRAMATIC!!
Best In Show was the fabulous Blue Persian Alter/Spay from Kenkat Cattery, JADON COMEFLY WITH ME OF KENKAT owned by Leah Fowler and D &.S. Cook of the Pacific North West.
"This year's 'Best-in-Show' cat showcases the attributes of the Persian breed very well," said Pam DelaBar, president of the CFA. "As always, the competition was intense, but she gave a wonderful presentation in the judging rings."
The International Press was everywhere and we were interviewed in a few different languages! Our friend from Strathmore Alberta, John Friesen was interviewed by the local San Francisco newspaper.
Our kitties had such a great time. They love to be admired, and the fact that they were the only chocolates and lilac in whole show, certainly made them instant celebrities. Our lilac, is Ch. Prairiecats it’s a Beautiful Day of Scaatycat. His chocolate brother, ‘THE ROGERS KITTY’ is Ch Prairiecats Forest Gump of Scaatycat.
Uncle, Ch Prairiecats Oompa Loopha is the other little Canadian chocolate, who made our group complete.
The weather in San Mateo was astounding and saying good-bye was the hardest part of the whole journey.
Our hosts were gracious and we will very likely return next year.
If you would enjoy seeing the beauty of a cat show in person, try visiting the CFA, TICA , CCA or ACFA websites
