It will take you a million light years from home!
Catherine Langford leads a team of top notch scientists who have reached a dead end while researching an ancient artifact found by her father in the Egyptian desert near Gaza. Facing the possibility of having the program shut down if she doesn't get results soon, she enlists the help of a gifted linguist and Anthropologist ,Dr. Daniel Jackson (James Spader)! Surpising everyone, Daniel decodes the heiroglyphics in record time and it turns out the artifact is infact a gate to another world.
Soon a Team of trained Marines led by Colonel Jack O'Neill ( Kurt Russell ) are heading through the gate but since they might need help with more hieroglyphics they reluctantly agree to bring Daniel along. They discover the desert like planet of Abydos and are welcomed by the friendly Abydonians. However Abydos is held in fear by The God Ra and the Abydonians are slaves!! Ra's not to happy to have visitors and while Daniel tries to figure out how to get back home, Jack and the boys try to keep Ra from killing all of them!!
Unknown to all, Jack is under orders to set off a nuclear bomb on the planet if there is a threat to Earth. Feeling that Ra is indeed a threat Jack arms the bomb and it's up to Daniel to talk him out of killing the innocent Abydonians. Jack ,who lost his own son recently in an accident that he blames himself for, realizes he has come to care for the young Abydonian boy ,Skaara and he joins Daniel in the fight to rid Abydos of Ra.
In the biggest battle of their lives they get the upper hand and use the nuclear bomb to kill Ra. Daniel dials the gate so Jack and the boys can return home but as for him, he like Abydos and decides to stay!
The official report was that Daniel was killed by Ra ( not a lie since he really does die and then is brought back to life by the sarcouphagous) and Jack having determined the planet unsafe used the nuclear bomb (also not a lie he just forgot to mention that he set it off on the space ship so the planet was saved).
