how to choose elements for your website

If you have a website, there is something you are probably trying to communicate to your site visitors. Remember the whole purpose is to get the communication across. Adding a bunch of stuff just because it's "cool" might or might not get people to want to stay on your site or come back again.

When creating your website, be sure to not add too many visually distracting elements to the page. Elements such as mouse clocks, floating bubbles, scrolling text, blinking text, etc., should be used sparingly. Some of them - such as scrolling or blinking text - is pretty much a no-no today, as so many web developers consider these to be unprofessional and scream "newbie home page!"

When looking for graphics, remember to check for copyright information and be sure to not get yourself into trouble by using copyrighted images without permission!

Make sure the elements you add to your site add VALUE to your site. If you have a page about pets, adding a "dog of the day pic" might be very cool. But that might not go over so well if your site is about selling candles.
