What is Shotokan Karate

The current art studied was originally passed down from the grand master Funakoshi who resided in Okinawa. Further back in history however there are clearly influences from India and China as is reflected in the kata's (Fighting Forms). There is also heavy influence from China with reference to animal mimicking and 5 element theory however this is the art of karate jitsu and not karate-do. Shotokan is an excellent way to develop strength make new friends and to develop fitness and flexibility. Classes are taught in a controlled fashion to develop coordination and speed without risking injury associated with some of the contact forms. You will develop your own art with time, there is no such thing as a style of fighting as bigger people will always use different techniques to smaller people.

We have men women and children all training in our club with a friendly sociable atmosphere. Karate is a fun sport and a serious martial art. You should never take either of these out of the Sport. The biggest accomplishment for me is developing my students over the years to a point where they are fitter stronger and more confident within themselves. I am not interested in ego's and am happy to learn from my students if they have something to share in return.

Fitness

Someone once said to me if you want to keep fit join an aerobics club not a martial arts club. This is absolute rubbish, you need to be agile and fit to fight. This is why the Chinese practice Tai Chi, it keeps the body strong and agile. Admitedly the older more experienced probably know pressure points to so do not have to be as fit, but all masters are always incredibly agile. My first instructor Sensei Roger Hall 8th Dan taught directly by Kanazawa showed me this. I can remember as a child watching his incredible control speed and agility. The strength and muscle training you learn in karate will stay with you for life although many of the exercises have been modified now to protect your joints.

Pressure Points

These are only to be used if you are in extreme danger. They are very effective for self defence situations and excellent for Children and Women given todays society.

Vital Points

Striking these points are taught in classical karate the echelon sets are a good start for this.

Kata Forms .

These are groups of moves that you learn in sequence. They increase your fitness and flexibilty and contain all of the secrets for dim-mak fighting. You can practice these at home very easily to enhace your skill.

Kumite (Fighting)

This is a broad term, mainly for advanced students semi-contact sparring. For junior students we teach responses to situations you may come across in the street e.g knife attack, mugging grabbing multiple attacks etc.

Pad work

Very important as if you constantly train yourself with control you will hit in a controlled fashion. This is where you get to practice hitting your points hard > on the pads.
