To: sustaindane@ yahoogroups. com applications opening soon

 Hello,
With so many great initiatives taking place in Madison right now, it is both exciting and frustrating to be so far away from all of it. However, I believe the program you see described below is the best educational opportunity available training leaders about sustainability and how to help society with the monumental tasks we now face in reshaping our current un-sustainable path. The University is about to open up it's application process, so I encourage anyone interested to apply or forward on this information to others who might be interested. in the Master's in Leadership Toward Sustainability program you will meet change agents from China to Panama, and Australia to Canada. You will learn from the leading thinkers in sustainable development, and hear guest lectures from Manfred Max-Neef, P.h.D leader in ecological economics, universal human needs, and social sustainability, Karl Henrik Robert, Founder of the Natural Step Framework, Torbjorn Lahti, leader in sustainable municipality development in Sweden, Leif Johansson, M.s.c, P.h.D sustainable transportation, President  of Volvo Group, and Margot Wallstrom EU Environment Commissioner, among others.

Feel free to email me with questions.

Dear All,

I received the heads-up about this list from Paul Drake who attended your meeting. Paul thought some of you might be interested in the discussion courses offered by the Northwest Earth Institute (NWEI). I recently was hired to revitalize NWEI's Tacoma and Olympia chapters.

Founded by full-time volunteers in 1993, the mission of NWEI is motivating individuals to examine and transform personal values and habits, to accept responsibility for the earth, and to act on that commitment. Working through a network of sister and affiliate organizations as well as through its Portland office, NWEI has drawn together more than 70,000 people in groups of 8-12 in workplaces, homes, faith centers, and other gathering places.

NWEI currently offers six self-facilitated discussion courses:

  • Exploring Deep Ecology
  • Discovering a Sense of Place
  • Choices for Sustainable Living
  • Voluntary Simplicity
  • Healthy Children-Healthy Planet
  • Globalization and Its Critics

In late January 2007, we expect to issue a four-week discussion course on global warming!

Discussion groups generally meet once a week, usually for about an hour, over seven to eight sessions. Reading preparation takes about 1-2 hours per week. A volunteer mentor facilitates the discussion at the first session. The only charge is the $15 fee for each course book. More information can be found at www.nwei.org.

If you are interested in starting a course, or have a question about how the courses work, please feel free to contact me off list at karinv@nwei. org.
