India's Leaders

The hope for India of the Leader, Jawaharlal Nehru, after
independence was for India to become a secular country, a country with no religion. Nehru led India through many crises and set up an education system.

Nehru's Successors
After Nehru died in 1964 his daughter Indira Gandhi became prime minister. She continued her fathers work in modernizing, economy roblems and corruption that weakened her government. In 1975 she took more control and jailed political opponents, and limited the freedom of the press. She eventually restored democratic rule, after that in 1984 she ordered the government to storm the Golden Temple that was
being held by Sikhs. She was shot two years later by two of her Sikh bodyguards.

Her son, Rajiv Gandhi replaced his mother. He however was also killed in 1991, murdered by assassins who were linked to to Tamil guerrillas from Sri Lanka.

The country was then in question of what would happen to it. All they could do was look for leaders to bring them through it.
