SAO Chi Chapter History
During the Fall of 2007, two of the founding sisters, Amanda Sundberg and Whitney Mullen, began their search for a service organization at the University of South Carolina. After looking into several organizations already established at the University, the girls found themselves being repeatedly disappointed either by the purposes or practices of such organizations. Amanda and Whitney decided that if they couldn’t find what they were looking for on campus then there was a possibility that other girls who were looking for the same thing were experiencing disappointment. It was this thought that made them realize the University of South Carolina was in need of something different, an organization like no other established organization on campus that had a very unique purpose and would benefit young women like themselves. It was then that they came across Sigma Alpha Omega. The purpose of this national organization is to assemble Christian women in Christ-centered sororities at institutions of higher learning for the purpose of chapter members enjoying Christian fellowship, service, and social activities that benefit the members, the Christian Community, and the General Public. Amanda and Whitney realized after reading the purpose of Sigma Alpha Omega that this is exactly what they had been praying for and exactly the unique organization that the University of South Carolina needed. After sharing their ideas with some friends, Maria Hannah desired to take part in the journey of establishing a chapter of Sigma Alpha Omega at the University of South Carolina. The girls hope to reach out to the students at Carolina and provide an organization that offers fellowship and service through God while bonding with one another as sisters in Christ. The Chi Chapter of Sigma Alpha Omega is committed according to the ideals of Christ and His Word, uplifting each other through fellowship and service, and bringing the love of Christ to the University of South Carolina. On December 14th, 2007 the founding sisters of the Chi Chapter of Sigma Alpha Omega were inducted and given their charter from the National Organization. The Chi Chapter was officially recognized at the University of South Carolina in February 2008.
