About City of Split

HISTORY

In year 295 AD – 1700 years ago, Roman emperor Diocletian started to build his palace in the bay of Aspalathos on the Dalmatian coast, the land of his birth. After his abdication in 305, he retired, left Nicomedia and settled in the palace, intending to spend the rest of his life there. The rectangular Diocletian’s palace occupies an area or about 28.900 square meters.

After Diocletian’s death the palace remained an imperial possession. The transformation of the palace into the town began in the seventh century, when the inhabitants of nearby Salona took refuge in the palace during the invasion of Avars and Slavs. In the tenth and eleventh centuries Split came under the rule of Croatian kings. At the beginning of the twelfth century, like other Dalmatian towns, it became a free commune under direct authority of Hungaro-Croatian king.

At the beginning of the fifteenth century, the medieval free commune was replaced by Venetian administration, which lasted until the end of the eighteenth century.

In the nineteenth century, after a short period under French rule, the town fell under Austro-Hungarian Empire.

After World War I, the role of Split as a cultural, administrative and economic centre became still greater, reflecting in the town expansion and large population influx.

Following the Second World War, during which the town suffered from frequent air raids, there began the most dynamic development of Split.

CHARACTER

Split is city that lives at a slow pace: you will soon get used to it. The feeling that persists is the one of an every day holiday. The squares, restaurants and cafes are crowded. The unavoidable promenade, Riva, is overwhelmed by mild and refreshing wind, Mistral in summer, while in winter; the Mediterranean sun and the Palace protect it from the cold like a winter coat. This really feels like home.

It is the déjà vu that can be experienced only in the cities in which the centuries clash. A thousand and seven hundreds years ago Roman Emperor Diocletian, son of Jupiter the God, built the first summer palace, nowhere else but here.
