HISTORY
In
year 295 AD – 1700 years ago, Roman emperor Diocletian started to build his
palace in the

Diocletian’s death the palace remained an imperial possession. The
transformation of the palace into the town began in the seventh century, when
the inhabitants of nearby Salona took refuge in the palace during the invasion
of Avars and Slavs. In the tenth and eleventh centuries

medieval free commune was replaced by Venetian administration, which lasted
until the end of the eighteenth century.

the nineteenth century, after a short period under French rule, the town fell
under Austro-Hungarian Empire.
