Matthew and the Highland Rescue

The Time Gate Series

This is my first children's novel, but I have written short stories for women’s magazines,

a vegetarian cookery book and I had 11 published songs. I have also worked as Ballater

correspondent for the Deeside Piper & Herald, was founder editor of the Ballater Eagle

and I am involved in youth work. I live in a beautiful part of the Scottish Highlands,

a few miles from Loch Kinord, which inspired this novel. I have worked at Ballater Library

for 13 years. So if on your travels you happen upon a little place called Ballater,

and find yourself with nothing to read, do pop into the library and you can become a visitor

member. We welcome a lot of visitors from around the world every summer.

I'd be happy to meet you.

Author Events

Author Event          (From the Deeside Piper)

Ballater Library took part in the Victoria Week celebrations by hosting an author event in the Supper Room of the Victoria and Albert Halls on August 9th.

The evening featured novelist Tania Kindersley and other local authors Mary Munro, Alex Clark and Sabine Muir.

Tania Kindersley, who has written six novels, answered questions about her writing life and read some excerpts from her latest novel ‘Nothing to Lose’, which is set in Scotland. One of the wonderfully descriptive passages she read conveyed her deep love of the Scottish landscape.

She is best known for her novels: ‘Goodbye Johnny Thunders’, ‘Elvis has Left the Building’ and ‘Don’t Ask me Why’.

Tania lives in Aboyne and helps run The Chocolate Gallery in Ballater.

Mary Munro entertained people with a couple of her delightful tales in the Doric from her books ‘Deeside Reets’ and ‘Tales of the Mither Tongue’.

She read her wonderfully evocative and funny story ‘Dancing at Dinnet’ and ‘The Muckle Spate’, an account of the Ballater Bridge’s disintegration when the river Dee broke its banks in the 19th century.

Her last story, Deeside Reets, mirrored Tania’s sentiments about Deeside.

Unfortunately, Alex Clark was unable to attend, due to illness, but he left a request for Sabine to read a chapter of his new book: The Depression Boy.

Sabine Muir introduced her newly released children’s novel: ‘Meeting Wolfie: A Story About Mozart’. The novel is a special tribute to Mozart on the 250th anniversary of his birth.  She read a couple of excerpts, which were very amusing, and entertained both children and adults alike.

During the interval, Aberdeenshire Library and Information Service provided refreshments.

A Question and Answer session followed at the end.

BOOK SIGNING SESSIONS

My first Book Signing Session was held at Deeside Books, Bridge Street, Ballater

on Saturday, March 5th 2005.  It was very well attended and I'd like to thank everyone

who turned up to support me.

My second Book Signing was held at WHSmith, High Street, Banchory on

Saturday April 16th.  Despite the rain, lots of people came and it was a great success.

SPY A GOOD BOOK

Summer Reading Challenge

Category: Letter to a Friend, Age 9-11.

Winner: Elizabeth Hazley

Dear Ailsa,

I have just read ‘Matthew and the Highland Rescue’ by Sabine Muir.

I think you would enjoy this book because it will bring back memories of Ballater to you.

Do you remember Sabine who works in our library? Well, she is the author.

It is a wonderful story about a boy called Matthew who comes up from London to Deeside

to spend a holiday with his cousin, Rory.

Rory’s dad takes them on a fishing trip to Loch Kinord and tells them a story about the

Island in the Loch.

Next morning, Matthew, Rory and his sister, Morag, cross over to the island and are transported

back in time to the 11th century.

They meet Queen Margaret and her husband, King Malcolm III and learn about life back then.

You will really love this book but I hope it will not make you too homesick especially when you

read about Ballater School and the Braemar Gathering.

I think your Mum and Dad will enjoy it too.

Lots of love,

Elizabeth. X

P.S. Please let me know what you think of the book.
