Ryan Stouts Freewebs Site

Update

Most of the stuff on this site is fairly outdated, most recently I have been working on BustAName.com

Ajax World Presentation

Thanks to all who saw me present at the ajax world conference,  My slides and other info for my talk is available here.

About Me

I'm a guy who enjoys programming.  Here's my languages in order of preference:  Ruby, JavaScript, C, C++, PHP, Python, Java.  I also like the following: playing guitar, drums, bass, home recording, mixing, sound teching, snow boarding, going to music stores.  I live in Maryland and am working for freewebs doing development.  We have a pretty cool bunch of developers, so its fun and keeps me busy.

My Projects

Web development is a favorite past time of mine, check out my sites below:

http://www.stage.fm - online music community, similar to the old mp3.com, at the moment around 10k bands and 70+ days of music

http://www.bookfaced.com/ - college book exchange website, trade books with other people on your campus.

http://www.booksnearme.com/fb/ - when the facebook api first came out, I decided I wanted to make the first map mashthing.  (took about 2 hours)

Other cool stuff

So I'm not a big myspace user, but seeing how a ton of traffic goes through it, making something to interact with myspace is always a good idea.  Two of the guys I work with made http://www.realeditor.com/  It is by far the best profile editor out there, and definitely worth taking a look at.  It lets you edit your profile and see it update live.  Then when you are done, you can hit save and it will login and upload the css for you.

Also, Dave (one of the guys I work with) is really on a roll, he likes to do a lot of partial simulations and he made a framework for it.  Worth checking out if you do a lot of motion stuff in JavaScript.  It has a few timer issues (particularly in firefox)  I made a suggestion on how to get it to work a little more smoothly, and I think he is going to implement it soon.

Also, Valerio's new JavaScript framework Mootools is really starting to take off.  I remember when he was working with me at freewebs and when he first demoed it to us back in July, I knew it was going to be big, but I really didn't expect it to start replacing prototype for a lot of sites.  Also it is amazing how much it has changed since then.  I have been making contributions on the forum from time to time.  The thing I like about the way Valerio does things is he doesn't take everyones advice, he really only does something if he thinks its a good idea.  Ultimately I think some of the best projects are led by one person with a lot of vision.  Obviously this doesn't work in a lot of cases, but here it really does (same thing with the Rails framework I feel)  Anyway, if you do a lot of front end coding, you should check it out.  My two sites stage.fm and bookfaced.com are both written with it.

So Andrew is another friend of mine who worked at freewebs during the summer.  He recently launched http://www.quizlet.com/, kind of a social network online flash card thing.  It is really well done, the kid has a real knack for UI.  It makes me wish I was still in high school and had the kind of time again to do these kind of projects.  I have been using it to learn Italian.  It is great because there was already a bunch of italian words already on the site, so I could just jump in and start learning.
