RUSSELL TOVEY

"...giving off the impression of a young Michael Caine..."

NEW SITE UPGRADE!

Hi guys! Have been having a sleepness night tonight in the midst of my university second year exams - (am doing a law degree, don't ask why!)

So, I decided to use my time productively and have finally got round to uploading the new and improved version of the site. :D I hope you all like it... I much prefer it to the older version.(Let me know what you think)

I would also like to thank everyone for their kind words about the site, bringing together all of Russell's fans was my aim - I want the whole world to know the name RUSSELL TOVEY! So this site and its many visitors (check out the counter!!!) is a start.

By the way, if you are wondering where the quote on the new site header "...giving off the impression of a young Michael Caine..." is from, I found it in a review of Tintin by the British Theatre guide and I thought it summed Russell up!

The link of the full review is http://www.britishtheatreguide.info/reviews/tintin-rev.htm if anyone wants to read it all.

XMAS Russell!

Merry Xmas to all you Russell fans out there, and of course to you too Russell! MAJOR NEWS - Russell is going to be on our tvs over the Xmas period in "My Family and Other Animals" (I bet you have all seen the adverts already, but I thought I would reminder you all!)

Russell Tovey as Leslie in 'My Family And Other Animals'

He plays Leslie in the show... I won't tell you too much more as I don't want to spoil it, but it is a big part (so set those video recorders!)

Here's a short synopsis from the BBC website - "The rag-tag family, helped out by larger-than-life taxi driver Spiro (Omid Djalili) move through a succession of brightly coloured villas. While nature-obsessed Gerald explores Corfu's marine and insect life, his sister Margo (Tamzin Merchant) fights off the advances of would-be suitors, and his shooting mad brother Leslie (Russell Tovey) blasts the island's bird life to smithereens. Meanwhile, Gerald's eldest brother, overbearing intellectual Larry (Matthew Goode), invites a stream of artistic types to stay.

My Family And Other Animals was adapted from Gerald Durrell's bestselling book by Simon Nye, whose previous credits include Men Behaving Badly and Pride. It's directed by Casanova's Sheree Folkson. " (http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/myfamilyandotheranimals/)

OTHER DESCRIPTIONS I HAVE FOUND:

  • Newcomer Eugene Simon and acclaimed actress Imelda Staunton head the cast of Simon Nye's adaptation of Gerald Durrell's much-loved account of his childhood. Set during the 1930s, the story follows the young hero and his bohemian family from England to the Greek island of Corfu where they set up home. However, the imminent outbreak of war forces them to leave their tranquil idyll - but not before they've each learnt valuable lessons about life, love and family. Russell Tovey and Chris Langham also star.
    (BBC One)
  • "BASED on the famous autobiography of Gerald Durrell, this should be perfect family viewing The Durrells leave 1930s England for a new life on Corfu. Eugene Simon plays the 10-year-old Gerald, who already has his nose into nature. Tamzin Merchant plays the spotty Margot, Russell Tovey plays gun-loving Leslie and Matthew Goode is brainbox Larry. Their mother, played by Imelda Staunton, thinks Gerald is too wild and forces him to get an education. But this sees his teachers falling for sister Margot. But the magic quality of the island and Gerald's enjoyment of the marine and insect life is soon marred by the Second World War."
  • "Escaping the dreary wet weather of Thirties England, the eccentric and bohemian Durrell family uproot and ship themselves to the sunnier climes of the Greek island of Corfu. This rag-tag family - innocent naturalist and intrepid biologist, ten-year-old Gerald, acne-infested Margot, gun-loving Leslie and overbearing, intellectual Larry - headed by their warm, sympathetic mother, experience the joys of living a life of freedom and adventure. For Mother especially, the experience is emotionally moving as she watches her youngest child, Gerald, grow up more and more each day. Spending so much of his time in the garden and fields watching one sort of the animal kingdom in their natural habitat allows Gerald to learn more incisively about the habits of an altogether different genus: his family. But news of home and the imminence of the Second World War lift the veil of magical innocence felt by the whole family, as they leave their beloved Corfu an emotionally richer family than the one that arrived. The cast list includes: Imelda Staunton as Mother; Eugene Simon as Gerald; Tamzin Merchant as Margot; Russell Tovey as Leslie; Matthew Goode as Larry; Chris Langham as Theodore Stephanides, a biologist and witty raconteur; and comedian Omid Djalili as Spiro."

SOUNDS LIKE IT WILL BE GOOD....

TINTIN!

Russell has been in Tintin playing the title role.

Tintin

"I knew Russell Tovey was the actor I wanted and he doesn't speak RP English, so Tintin doesn't speak like that. And with those kinds of decisions you think, thank goodness, now I don't have to worry any more. Because the people who have a fixed idea of what Tintin looks and sounds like are going to be relieved of that immediately. And they will either walk out. Or stay." - Quoted from an interview with Rufus Norris (Tintin's director) David Greig (co-writer of Tintin the play)

From the emails and messages I have received you all loved it as much as I did! :) And it seems so did the critics...

Here are some 'expert' opinions on Russell's performance:

  • FROM THE BRITISH THEATRE GUIDE - "This production contains two of the country's finest young actors, Russell Tovey who did so well in The History Boys ...Russell Tovey, giving off the impression of a young Michael Caine, certainly looks the part with costume and hair exactly like that of the original model."
  • "The colours and the costume design are just perfect ... best of all Russell Tovey's Tintin, his hair dyed a chestnut brown and finished in the famous quiff, his ears prominent but not overly large."
  • "Russell Tovey is perfect as Tintin; he has a London accent and so avoids the effete received pronunciation of the 1950s. He is innocent and detached. His stance is an accurate depiction of the cartoon and time and again the drawings come to life."
  • "Russell Tovey’s ginger, London geezer Tintin will not be to everyone’s tastes but his performance exquisitely portrays the inner turmoil the burnt-out boy reporter is feeling as he faces an impossible task trying to find his best friend who has crashed on a Tibetan mountain."
  • FROM THE GUARDIAN ARTS CRITIC - "Russell Tovey's Tintin has a boy-scout earnestness and quiffed charm."
  • "As Tintin, 23-year-old London actor Russell Tovey brings a touch of grief and melancholy to his stubborn - and successful - search for Chang who he refuses to believe is dead. "

Russell's New Play!

Russell is in the "Laramie Project"

A short synopsis:

In October 1998, Matthew Shepard, an
openly gay college student, was kidnapped,
brutally beaten and left lashed to a fence.
He was discovered 18 hours later, and died
in hospital several days after. The murder
became an international symbol of intolerance.
The Laramie Project, extraordinary and
uplifting, is part of the fight back.

This play is a production of KIT productions. It is running at the SOUND THEATRE in London from 21st June until 16th July.
