Welcome to RuneScape and welcome to Tip.It - RuneScape Tips. RuneScape is a Massive Multiplayer Online Adventure Game. RuneScape has many features... there are hundreds of monsters to kill, quests to complete, lands to explore and treasure to be found, but the most interesting thing about RuneScape compared to most games is that you are playing alongside and interacting with real people playing RuneScape around the world at the same time as you.
This guide will help you take your first steps in RuneScape -- we will explain how to make your character, how the controls work, how to chat, and so on. But before we do, it's very important that you know how to be safe while playing RuneScape. As we've already explained, you'll be interacting with people from all over the world when you play RuneScape. It's important to remember that, while playing the game is perfectly safe, there will always be a few people that will try to take advantage of you if they can. We recommend that you take a few moments to read through the information in our Security Centre. It will only take a few minutes, and the information and tips provided will help keep you and your computer safe.
So now that you're ready to get started, it's time to create your RuneScape account. Start by clicking the new account button on the RuneScape.com mainpage and signing up. Be sure to choose your name wisely, as this is what people will know you as in-game, and you can't change it. Don't user your real first and last name. Also try to avoid names with too many numbers - you'll regret choosing Luke9184576, trust us.
Once you've signed up, click the play game link and select what detail level you want to use to see the game (depending on your computer and internet connection). To choose a world, you can click on the "Choose the Best World for Me" button, and the RuneScape program will choose the least populated world on a server closest to you. All the worlds look the same, they're just located on different servers. You can also choose the specific world you'd like to play on yourself, if you like. This is especially handy if you're meeting friends on-line and they live in a different part of the world than you. Once your world is chosen, log in with your username and password. You will be asked to choose how your character will look, then you'll begin playing by visiting Tutorial Island. This is fairly self explanatory, and will teach you the basics of the game.
Once you've finished Tutorial Island, you'll be 'released' into the big wide world. This is the step at which many people stumble, but you have an added advantage compared to all them - you've already discovered Tip.It!
Tip.It is a RuneScape fan site that's devoted to bringing you the most up to date information and the best guides, tips and maps for RuneScape on the web. Whenever you're stuck on something or want to know anything about RuneScape, be sure to read the Tip.It guides, and most likely you'll find your answer. If not, sign up for the Tip.It Forums and other RuneScape players who use Tip.It will be able to answer your questions. If you'd like more information on how to use our Forums, you can read through our Forum User Guide.
Okay. So you've finished Tutorial Island, and you've been wandering in the woods and checking out the castles for a while... so what should you do next? Read on to find out!

In the picture below, you can see the control panel of RuneScape. It is very easy to use, but we will explain all the different options and menus anyway. If you want to open a menu, simply click the icon, and it should appear in the brown area in the middle.
Inventory![]()
This is the most important part of your control panel. Here you will find everything you have in your "Backpack", unless it is armour or a weapon that you're wielding (I'll get to that below). If you want to 'use' an item you have in your backpack, simply left click on it (a white border will appear around the chosen item). When you right click an item in your inventory you will have an option called 'Drop'. This option does just what the name says, it drops the item onto the ground. When you drop an item, it won't be visible to other players until it's been on the ground for one minute. There are also many different ways in which you can interact with items, and each one is different. Right clicking on the item will show all the different options. You can also re-arrange your inventory. You do this by left clicking an item and, while holding down the mouse button, drag and drop it to another spot.
Equipment![]()
In the equipment menu you can see the armour and weapons your character is currently wielding or wearing. These items will not show up in your inventory. To wield armour or weapons you need to have it in your inventory, and then left click on it - 'wield'. When you want to take it off again, go to your equipment menu, and left click the item -'remove' - and it will re-appear in your inventory.
By clicking on the "Show Equipment Stats" button, this menu can also show your weight carried, your equipment bonuses, and also gives you a better view of what your character looks like with the selected items equipped. Metal armour, weapons, ores and logs tend to weigh a lot, so take that into account when deciding when you should run. For example, when mining, run from the bank to the mine when you are carrying little, but walk back because you have to carry all the ore. If you want to travel a long distance, put all your equipment in the bank and you will be able to run further. (For more info on running, energy and weight, see our Getting Around guide.)
Fighting Mode![]()
Fighting mode is where you decide how to fight against enemies. You can be accurate, aggressive, or defensive, and each style will affect how the experience is allocated to your stats. Some weapons also have different attack styles. The best one to use depends on what sort of armour your opponent is wearing. Your combat level is shown at the top, and the toggle for "Auto-Retaliate" is shown just below the attack styles. Auto-Retaliate set to "Off" means that you won't automatically attack a monster or a player that attacks you first. If it is set to "On", you will automatically fight back when something attacks you. (See Your Character for tips on beginning training.)
Quests and Statistics![]()
In the Quests menu you will see a complete list of the RuneScape quests. When you haven't yet begun a quest, the name will appear in red. When you have started the quest, the name will be yellow, and when you have completed it the name will appear in green. Furthermore, you can click on the quest names to get a short description of what you have done in the quest and what you need to do next. (Detailed information for conquering quests can be found in our Quest Guides.) Your total quest points are shown at the top.
![]()
In the Statistics menu you will find all of your stats/skills. When you hover over the icon of a skill, you will be able to see your current experience, and how much experience you need to get to the next level of the skill. You can click on each skill to bring up a small menu of information about that skill. This is very handy for a quick reference and usually has info about different things you can do at different levels. Detailed information about each skill, what can be done at each level and how much experience can be earned is shown in our Skill Guides.
Prayer and Magic![]()
In the prayer menu you will find a list of different prayers you can use. Prayer allows you to boost your stats for a short time to give you an added boost when you need it most. (See Your Character for tips on beginning training.)![]()
In the magic menu you will find a list of different magical spells you can cast. Magic is a powerful form of combat that allows you to attack your foes from afar with devastating effects. (See Your Character for tips on beginning training.)
Friends List![]()
On your friends list you're able to talk privately with your friends. You can do this by clicking on a friend's name, and then entering a message in the chat box under your game screen. This is explained in greater detail in the Chatting section of this guide. You also have two different options: one is to add a friend to your list, and second is to delete a friend from your list. Furthermore, you will be able to see what world your friends are using. If they are on the same world as you, their name will appear in green, if they are on a different world, their name will be yellow, and if they aren't online, their name will be red. When you're talking privately with a friend, other players cannot see these messages.
Also at the top of your friends list you will find information telling you which world you are currently on.

Ignore List![]()
The ignore feature enables you to ignore messages from other users who you do not wish to receive messages from (such as someone who is harassing you or being offensive). If you add a name to this list, that user will see you as being offline permanently and will not be able to trade with you nor speak to you. Again, you have the options to add or delete users from the list.
Game Options![]()
The Game Options menu contains several useful toggles and adjustments that allow you to customize the way you experience the game.
| Screen Brightnes | |
| Music Volume | |
| Effects Volume | |
| Area Sounds (Ambience) Volume | |
| Mouse Buttons | |
| Chat Effects | |
| Split Private Chat | |
| Accept Aid | |
| Run and Energy | |
| House Options |
Here's a quick run through of what each one does.
Screen Brightness![]()
Screen Brightness is used to make the screen darker or brighter depending on your personal preference and monitor. Choosing to have the screen too dark can give you headaches while playing, so we recommend you set it to either bright or very-bright on TFT screens, and normal or bright on normal CRT screens. Slide the bar next to the icon left or right to adjust this control.
Music Volume![]()
This volume control sets the sound level for the RuneScape music (or turns it off); this will be explained a bit more in the Music part of this guide. Slide the bar located next to the icon left or right in order to adjust this control.
Effects Volume![]()
The Effects Volume control allows you to change the sound level for the in-game sound effects (doors closing, monsters fighting you, etc.) Slide the bar next to the icon left or right to adjust this control.
Area Sounds (Ambience) Volume![]()
This control allows you to change the volume level of the ambient in-game sounds. This includes terrain sounds, nearby player activities, birds, and weather effects such as wind. Slide the bar next to the icon left or right in order to adjust this control.
Mouse Buttons![]()
The Mouse Buttons control configures RuneScape to work with either a one button or two button mouse. If you choose to have two (default setting), you will have a left click option, and a right click menu. If you choose one button, you will automatically get the menu when clicking.
Chat Effects
The Chat Effects control determines whether you see in-game chat effects or not (these can get annoying after some time.) For more information about these, see the Chatting section of this guide.
Split Private Chat![]()
This control allows you to split private chat! Amazing eh? You can either display private messages in the chat box (if off), or in the lower part of the game window (if on) - this will help you notice private messages when you are in a crowded public area.
Accept Aid![]()
This toggle allows you to turn off or on the ability for another player to assist you. This option strictly controls whether or not another player can cast healing, curing, or teleporting spells on you. Turn it off to keep from being interrupted during risky situations, however, because some players may try to teleport you. When this happens, a window appears asking for you to confirm the teleport; this window interrupts your actions, which can be fatal in combat.
Run (and Energy)![]()
Run (and Energy) is as simple as it looks. This option selects between walking and running. You need energy to run. The percentage shown on this control tells you how much run energy you have left. When it hits 0%, your character automatically starts walking. (For more info on running, energy and weight, see our Getting Around guide.)
House Options![]()
The House Options button brings a member to another menu which allows them to change modes in their player-owned house (see the Construction guide). You can turn building mode on or off, expel all of your guests, or leave your house.
Emotes![]()
Emotes are a nifty addition to the game. You can make your character perform various actions and poses by simply clicking your desired emote. The image displayed in each spot is the emote activated when clicking it. You can also hover the mouse over the image for a tooltip to appear displaying the name of the emote. Coloured emotes are ones you have unlocked, while grey emotes are ones you haven't unlocked.
| Current Emotes | |||
| Start With: | Obtained from Quests (Members Only): |

Stronghold of Security: Idea Stamp Flap Slap Head Holiday Emotes: Scared Rabbit Hop Exclusive (P2P): Skill Cape |
Notes:
Music![]()
The music menu will show you a list of all the different musical pieces in RuneScape. The different songs are only unlocked if you have been to a certain area in the game. When a number is unlocked it will appear in green. You also have the option to choose between Auto and Manual music selection. If you choose automatic, the music played will be the music that goes with your current location, whereas if you choose manual you will be able to choose to hear any unlocked music yourself. For more information about where you need to go to unlock each piece of music, check out our Music Locations guide.
Log out![]()
Surely you don't need any assistance to do this?!
That completes the control panel, let's move on to some of the other important things in RuneScape.
Movement
Scenery Interaction
Camera
Mini-map
Trading
Shops
Banks
Movement
Moving around in RuneScape is quite easy. Simply point your mouse at where you want to move your character to, and click your left mouse button. When you click, a little yellow cross will appear, and you will start moving. Your character will automatically walk around tables, trees, fences and other objects if required. As you explore more and learn about the several areas in the huge RuneScape world, there will be different ways to get around the world. Refer to our Getting Around Guide for detailed information.
Scenery interaction
Interacting with objects in RuneScape is easy. All you have to do is point your mouse at the object or NPC (Non Player Character) you wish to interact with and click on it/him/her. While hovering over an object, the default option will be shown in the top-left hand corner of the screen, this action will be performed if you left click. For more options, right click and you will be able to select from a list. The default option is usually the action which is most used, for instance, all items on the ground are left click to pick up, and all doors are left click to open. All objects, items and NPCs may also be examined (in the right click menu.) This is useful for finding out some information about it.
The picture below shows the right click menu of a shopkeeper. The default left click option is to 'talk to' him, but you can also 'trade' with him, 'examine' him or walk over to him.
Camera
Sometimes you will need to see your character from a different angle to see what you're doing. To change the camera angle, simply use the arrow keys on your keyboard. Right and left make the camera angle go from side to side, and the up and down keys make the camera go up and down. Sometimes the game automatically moves your camera when you walk near cliffs and mountains.
Mini map
Above your control panel you will find a little map. This shows the area around you. When you are moving somewhere, a little red flag will be placed at your destination. You can also move your character by clicking on the map. It also has a little compass so you know which direction you're going. If you get lost, try looking at the world map. Alternatively, you could buy a Newcomer's map from the general store in Lumbridge for one gp. Whenever you read it, it'll automatically pinpoint your location. Keep in mind that it only covers Varrock, Lumbridge, Draynor Village, Port Sarim, and Falador surface areas and all surface areas between them. If you are outside these areas, your location will not be shown.
Trading
Trading with other players is something that makes RuneScape great. You can trade almost every item in the game, except quest items. To trade with other players simply right click on their character, and select trade. The person will get a message on their screen saying "X wishes to trade with you" (Where "X" is your RuneScape name). If the other player accepts your wish, he needs to right click your character and choose trade as well. When both of you have done this, a new window will come up, where you can trade your items. Also, if someone wants to trade with you, you can just click on "X wishes to trade with you" to open the trade window.
The window will have 2 parts. The left side is your own offer. This part will contain the items you are willing to trade to the other person. To add items simply click them in your inventory. You have some more options if you right click the item. As shown below, you can easily offer 1, 5, 10 and all of the item. You can also select to offer "X" which enables you to enter the number on your keyboard, this is useful when making trades with large amounts of items. (Read the bank section below to learn about notes, too.)
The right part of the trade screen is what the other person is offering you in exchange for your items. When you have reached a trade that is acceptable to both of you, you will both have to click accept in the middle of the screen. When you have done that, another screen will appear asking you to accept again. Remember to always check this second trade screen! If you do not check this screen, you may be cheated/scammed. Check both your own side, and the other player's side to make sure everything is as it should be. After that, click accept again, and the trade will be executed. If you'd like more information about trade and other scams and how to stay safe while playing, we recommend you pay a visit to our Security Centre.
Shops
There are many shops in RuneScape, and they deal with a lot of different items. One of the most important shops is the General store. You can find these all over RuneScape, and they will buy almost any item, and give you money for it. However, specialised shops will buy your items for more, and sell items to you for less, so it's often worth going to them. To open up a shop window you will need to talk with the shop keeper or shop assistant. After a bit of talking, a shop window will appear. You can also right click the shop keeper and choose trade, which will open the shop window instantly without the talking. Left clicking on an item in your inventory will show you how much the shop will pay you for it, and left clicking on an item in the shop will show you how much you must pay the shop for it. To sell an item to the store you will need to right click the item to bring up a menu, and select how many you wish to sell - 1, 5 or 10.
Buying items from shops is very similar. Just right click the item in the shop window and select 'buy.' Shops only accept coins, and you may need to save up a bit before you can buy some of the more expensive things.
Banks
Banks in RuneScape are simple and easy to use. They can be used to store your items so you don't have to carry them around in your inventory. To access your bank account, you'll need to find a bank (check the world map), and left click on the bank booth to use it. After a little talk with the banker, he will give you access to your bank account. (You can right click and select 'use quickly' to skip the chit-chat.) Note that you can only deposit items that are in your inventory (not those which you are wearing.) Depositing and withdrawing items is similar to using shops and trading, you just click on the item in your inventory to deposit it, and click it in the bank to withdraw it. You also have the deposit/withdraw 1, 5, 10 or X options.
Another feature of banks is bank notes. This allows you to withdraw large amounts of items (more than you can fit in your inventory) so that they can be easily traded. Simply click the 'note' button at the bottom of the bank screen.
Chatting in RuneScape is of course important. You need to communicate with other players to play the game fully. To chat you simply enter your message in the typing box and hit enter. When your message has been sent, it will appear in the chat box, and above your character's head. Normal chat is blue in the chat box.
Private messages
Private messages are, as the name would suggest, private between you and another user. To send these, you will need to have the friend on your friend list (look above for more information), then click his or her name, and type in a message in the chat box. When you're done with the message, just hit enter and your friend should see the message on their screen. Only you and your friend who can see what you type. Private messages are red in the chat box.
Split private chat
In the Game Options part of your control panel you have an option to split your private chat. If you have this set to off, the private messages you receive will appear in your chat box. If you have it on, your private messages will appear as light-blue text above the chat box, in your game window.
Underneath the chat area there are three buttons to control your interactions with other players.
Public chat
The public chat button controls the chat that everyone can see. There are four options; simply click to change between them.
Private chat
The private chat button toggles how you filter the people who can private message you.
Trade/duel
The trade/duel button toggles who you can try to trade you or challenge you to a duel (members).
Chat effects
You might have seen someone who is typing with a red-coloured text, or text that's waving. Typing like this is called chat effects, and you can only see them if you have the chat effects part of your settings in your control panel on. Chat effects will only appear over the head of the person using them, not in your chat box - there, the text will look normal.
To use the chat effects, you will need to write the code, and a colon
( : ) right after it with no space, and then your message without a space before the first word. For example, writing red:Hello would make you say "Hello" with a red font, but if you throw in a space and write red: Hello, you would actually say "Red: Hello" in game... Here is a full list of the codes:
| Colour codes: | Movement codes: |
| Red: Text is red | Wave: Text moves up and down. |
| Yellow: Text is yellow (default colour) | Wave2: Text waves diagonally. |
| Green: Text is green | Shake: Text shakes bizarrely. |
| Cyan: Text is cyan | Slide: Text slides from up to down. |
| Purple: Text is purple | Scroll: Text scrolls from left to right. |
| White: Text is white | - |
| Flash1: Flashes between red and yellow text | - |
| Flash2: Flashes between cyan and blue | - |
| Flash3: Flashes between light and dark green | - |
| Glow1: Text fades from red, to orange, to yellow, to green, to cyan |
- |
| Glow2: Text fades from red, to magenta, to blue, to dark red, to red |
- |
| Glow3: Text fades from white, to green, to white, to cyan | - |
Now, if you want to do something really advanced, you can use one of the colours AND movements at the same time. For this you need to write the colour first, and then scroll/wave. For example you could write something like this red:wave:Hello everyone and you would say "Hello everyone" with a red waving text.

Changing your looks
You can wear many different clothes, hats, gloves and boots in the game, but there are ways to change even your basic appearance.
Getting started with your skills
Here you will find a few tips on how to start the different skills. If you want more information, click the name of the skill, and you will be transferred to the Tip.It guide about that skill. Also see the Skill Tutors section below to find assistance (and some free starter supplies) right in the game!
Free Version (F2P) Skills:
Combat: (Attack, strength, defence and hits): What can we say...? Just fight low levelled monsters and you will improve your combat skills depending on your fighting mode. Around Lumbridge, fight level 2 and 5 goblins in the forest, or chickens and cows at farms.
Ranged: To begin ranging, you'll need a bow and some arrows. Unfortunately, these can be costly. See the Skill Tutor for free starter equipment, or when you get some money, have a chat with Lowe in the Varrock Ranged store. Start ranging in Lumbridge against goblins or chickens.
Prayer: There's not much to say about this skill, just pick up all the bones you see on the ground, and choose 'bury' when you have them in your inventory. Prayer will help protect you when you're fighting.
Magic: To start you will need some runes (see the Skill Tutor or use various spawn points around RuneScape to get some for free.) Once you have the runes to cast a lower level spell, go to the magic part of your control panel and choose the spell you want to cast: then just click on a monster.
Crafting: You can mine clay southwest of Varrock, then wet it with water and use the pottery in the Barbarian Village to the west. You can try leatherworking, too: kill cows for hides in Lumbridge and get them tanned in Al-Kharid. Do the Prince Ali Rescue Quest to save the tollgate fee.
Runecrafting: To start this skill you need to complete the Rune Mysteries Quest. After that, mine rune essence and make air runes at the air altar south of Falador.
Mining / Smithing: You can mine tin and copper in the Lumbridge Swamp East Mine south of the graveyard. When you decide you have enough ores, go to the furnace northeast of Lumbridge castle and smelt them into bars. Then head to Varrock and get metal-bashing!
Fishing / Cooking: To begin fishing, you'll need a net; then just go to a sea and start clicking. If there's a tree nearby, take your axe and tinderbox to raise your cooking, too. At a chicken farm you can train combat, prayer and cooking at the same time!
Firemaking / Woodcutting: To start these skills, simply go to the forest between Lumbridge and Draynor. You can get a beginner's bronze axe and a tinderbox from the Skill Tutor south of Lumbridge furnace. Chop down some trees and choose 'Light log'.
Member Only (P2P) Skills:
An introduction to Member skills, guides, areas, and tips is included in the New Members (P2P) Guide. Member only skills are Agility, Construction, Farming, Fletching, Herblore, Hunter, Slayer, and Thieving.
If you want more information about or help with some of RuneScape's various skills, there are several NPCs called "tutors" to help you get started with your adventuring. Some of them give free training supplies if you have lost yours or run out. Most of the tutors are scattered around Lumbridge, but one can be found at the anvils in Varrock. Tutors are marked on the minimap by a question mark so keep an eye out for them. You can also see their locations by hovering your mouse over the question mark icon on the Newcomer Map.

* Training sword and training shield are equivalent to a bronze longsword and a wooden shield.
** Training shortbow and training arrows are equivalent to a wooden shortbow and bronze arrows. Free arrows can be obtained only if you are out of these arrows and 30 minutes has passed since you last got free arrows (or free runes from Mikasi).
*** Free runes can be obtained only if you are out of these runes and 30 minutes has passed since you last got free runes (or free arrows from Nemarti).
Like everything, RuneScape has rules. These are not to make the game harder, or to annoy anyone, they are to protect you. Please, adhere to them at all time - it makes the game better for everyone. The official rules can be viewed here. It's very important that you read them carefully. If you accidentally break one you could be banned from RuneScape.
Reporting abuse
If you see someone breaking one of these rules, you ought to report them to Jagex. If everyone reports abusive players, then the game will be a better place for all. You can report abuse by clicking the button in the lower right hand corner of the chat box. You need to type in the player's name and then select which one of the rules they are breaking. This sends a snapshot of the last 60 seconds of chat and trade activity to Jagex. If the person continues to annoy you, add them to your ignore list rather than responding. Please, only send in an abuse report if the player is genuinely being abusive, not just because they called you a 'noob.'
Alternatively, if the type of rule breaking would not be detected by a simple chat and trade log (such as the player is macroing) you will need to use the customer support section on the RuneScape main page to report the player. Please do not send abuse reports to Tip.It. We are NOT part of Jagex Ltd. and cannot deal with abuse reports regarding players on RuneScape.
Player moderators
Player moderators are RuneScape players just like you and me, except Jagex has selected them as being responsible members of the RuneScape community. They are able to temporarily mute players who are being particularly foul-mouthed, and their abuse reports receive additional priority. This does not mean that they can answer all your RuneScape questions or that they always want to buy or sell items. They want to play the game, complete quests and raise their skills just like you do. When a player moderator talks they have a small silver crown next to their name to stand out from other players. You can read more about player moderators in the Frequently Asked Question section on the official RuneScape site.

Jagex staff
Jagex staff members have a little Gold crown next to their names when they talk in-game. Follow all their instructions promptly and you will have no cause for worry. If a member of the Jagex staff asks you a question, it would be wise to reply to them. Please note that ignore chat messages will not work on Jagex staff or player mods.

Well! How's that for an 'introduction' eh? If you've read this far, you've gained the biggest head start in RuneScape that you could ever imagine. So get out there, explore the map, raise your skills and strive for your goals!
Congratulations on getting a Runescape membership! Pay to Play (P2P) offers a huge new universe for members to explore, including tons of cities, dungeons, monsters, skills, quests, money-making, and more!
This guide will discuss some new travel possibilities, recommend some quests that are helpful to new members, address starting each of the new member skills available (Agility, Construction, Farming, Fletching, Herblore, Slayer and Thieving), and discuss other member features encountered while becoming acquainted with the wider domain of Runescape P2P.
If you are new to the world of Runescape in general, you may also want to look at Tip.It's Beginners' Guide, which contains basic information that applies to both Free To Play (F2P) and P2P.
When reviewing the many helpful Tip.It guides, be reminded: as a member, the "shaded" members items in tables are available to you!
The Runescape P2P surface land is many times larger than Free to Play (F2P): see Tip.It's 1.4MB interactive World Map. New members may want to keep a map handy for quick reference while becoming familiar with new areas.
Enchanted jewellery transports are a significant member advantage. The Getting Around Guide lists the various methods of transportation available in Runescape, most of which are exclusive to members. Gnome gliders, spirit trees, fairy rings, and balloons have quest requirements, as do many others.
An early issue confronting new members is "How do I get to the member areas?" On Karamja, just walk west to the Brimhaven gate. Then you can head north and pay 30 gp to take the ship to Ardougne, home of the Market Square thieving area.
From Falador, just walk west of Doric's house to pass through the member gate into Taverly.
Alternatively, from the Crafting Guild southwest of Falador, walk north through the member gate next to the Makeover Mage to head towards Taverly (past the famous "Member" Dungeon).
The Fishing Contest quest will allow you to bypass climbing over White Wolf Mountain (with its' many hostile level 30+ wolves) when travelling between Taverly and Catherby.
The Priest in Peril quest unlocks the Morytania region (east of Varrock).
The Death Plateau quest unlocks the Troll Stronghold area north of Burthorpe.
The Lost City quest unlocks the fairy city of Zanaris, home of the Cosmic runecrafting altar.
Starting the Giant Dwarf quest unlocks Keldagrim, underground home of the dwarves.
Starting the In Aid of the Myreque quest unlocks Burgh de Rott, a city in Morytania.
The Regicide quest unlocks the elven land of Tirannwn, but it's a higher-level quest: the fourth in a series which starts with the Plague City quest.
The members-only skills are Agility, Construction, Farming, Fletching, Herblore, Hunter, Slayer and Thieving.
To start training Agility, go to the Tree Gnome Stronghold Agility course. Agility is helpful for short cuts which get you around faster, and in numerous quests. With increased Agility, you also have more energy so you can run longer (good for getting places, and an advantage in the Wilderness!) Run energy is discussed in the Getting Around Guide. You can improve your run energy by getting some boots of lightness from the Temple of Ikov north of the Ardougne farming patches (the quest is not required) - simply take a lit candle and a slashing weapon (such as a dagger or sword) into the temple, then go west and down the stairs. Slash the web in front of the only red dot in the room, and grab several pairs of the boots to keep backups. Agility is the only member skill that works in Free to Play (F2P) worlds - your run energy will deplete slower in F2P as well as P2P.
To start training the long-awaited Construction skill, go to an Estate Agent office in Varrock, Falador, Seers' Village, or East Ardougne (locations shown in guide). Purchase a house for 1K, and follow the Construction Beginner's Guide Walkthrough for step by step instructions to achieve level 5. Use Tip.It's handy, unique and sortable Construction Table to learn what you can build at each level, including the materials and other requirements for each item.
To start Farming, you need some potato seeds. Go to Draynor Village market square and buy some seeds from Olivia's stall (or steal them if your Thieving is 10 or higher). Then go northwest to the farm located north of Port Sarim's bar, just southeast of Falador. Inside you can buy most of the Farming equipment you will need (a Seed dibber, a Rake, and a Watering can) for very little money (less than 100 gp). Fill your Watering can at the Sink or Rain barrel. Proceed north outside and hop the stile to the farming patch, then follow the instructions in Tip.It's Farming guide to plant your first crop.
Fletching isn't hard to begin - just get a regular Knife and some Logs and use the Knife on the Logs. To make Bowstrings, pick Flax (small plants with blue flowers) located in a field south of the Party Castle in Seers' Village. Use the Flax on the Spinning Wheel upstairs in the house just north of the church. Spinning Wheel locations are marked on Tip.It's 1.4MB interactive World Map. For a personal touch, visit the Ranged Guide tutor in Lumbridge (just north of the castle, south of the general store) - she can also advise members about fletching.
Herblore is unlocked by completing the Druidic Ritual quest. Herblore is a key part of both the Hero's quest and the Legends quest, so start using those Guams and Marrentills (frequently dropped by Al Kharid warriors) right away!
Start Hunter by visiting a Hunting shop. I recommend the one in Yanille (just east of the pub). Purchase a noose wand, then track kebbits at the very north end of the snow hunting grounds northeast of Rellekka.
The Slayer skill is begun by visiting a Slayer Master to get an assignment. The easiest one is Turael in Burthorpe (north of Taverly), in the first house on the east side of town. See the Slayer skill guide for further info. Consult Tip.It's Bestiary to get detailed information on any monster.
To start Thieving, pickpocket Men (level 2) and Women (level 2) until your Thieving reaches 5 or 10. Then you'll want to travel to Ardougne market square, the RS thieving mecca. See the Thieving skill guide.
All F2P skills have portions that are members-only. To learn about these added member techniques, check any of Tip.It's Skill Guides and look for sections marked "members only", items marked with an asterisk *, or for table rows highlighted in grey. For example, member Crafting includes the art of glassblowing, to create various useful glass items and earn crafting xp. New members may want to sail from Port Sarim to Entrana (don't bring any weapons or stat-boosting gear) to learn about this from Fritz the Glassblower. Other members-only Crafting abilities include making dragonhide and snakeskin armour, spinning flax into bowstrings, making battlestaves, and more.
Things for members to watch out for include poisoning, desert effect, and of course the Wilderness.
While touring Karamja and some dungeons, be aware that as a member you can get poisoned by certain monsters such as some spiders and Karamjan Tribesmen. Thieving certain chests also may release a cloud of poison. Regular poison starts by doing 4 HP damage each time it hits you (shown as a green "splat"), and takes a while to wear off - lower level members won't survive it without Antipoison potions. See the Herblore Guide Poisoning section.
You can also die of the "desert effect" in the Kharidian desert south of Al Kharid (through Shantay Pass, where you will be warned). Take precautions when going there: wear desert robes, carry waterskins, and use a Knife to cut Kharidian cactus to replenish your water supplies.
The Wilderness is just as lethal in P2P as it is in F2P. If you're new to Runescape, be aware that dying in the Wilderness deprives you of all but the three most valuable (store price) items you are carrying or wearing. If you have been in a fight in the Wilderness, you get a "skull" floating above your head, and dying will deprive you of ALL of your items. High level and P2P Wilderness areas also do not allow players to teleport out (not even Ring of Life or other enchanted jewellery teleports), so keep these dangers in mind. East Ardougne (west of the palace) has a "teleport lever" that transports you to the highest-level, exclusively members-only Wilderness area. Our 550KB Wilderness Map shows this area's features, which include an Agility course and the Mage Arena mini game.
A wide range of exotic weaponry is available to members, with new ones being added all the time.
Although Dragon weapons have in many cases been outclassed by newer weapons, the more powerful weapons require large amounts of cash or very high skill levels to obtain (80+). Dragon weapons offer excellent benefits and are within financial reach of most rune-armoured players, although they do require 60 Attack to wield. They offer a nice bonus for training Strength. They can be purchased from other players; most are also available from a shop after finishing a quest. You may not be able to wield some of them without the related quest. See the Dragon weapons section of the Combat guide.
The Combat guide also has detailed information on the more expensive and rare weapons available to members.
There are six members-only Guilds. Like the F2P guilds, each has certain entrance requirements. The name of each guild in the table below is linked to the related guild guide containing detailed information.
| Member Guilds | |||
| Guild | Skill Required | Location | Features |
| Fishing | 68 | North of Ardougne | Bank, shop, all fishing |
| Hero's | Hero's quest | North of Taverly | Amulet of Glory recharge fountain, dragon weapon shop, mining, caged Blue dragon |
| Legend's | Legend's quest | Northeast of Ardougne | Bank, shops, Shadow warrior dungeon |
| Magic | 66 | Yanille | Bank, rune shop, training dungeon, teleports to other wizard towers |
| Range | 40 | Southwest of Seers' Village | Several shops, archery game, practice towers |
| Warriors' | 130 combined Attack and Strength | West of Burthorpe Games room | Bank, several shops and training areas |
There are many ways to make money as a member, but they may involve having high levels or already having some assets to invest. If you become a member at a lower level, you may be anxious to make some cash. In addition to the ways you already know (such as mining ore, merchandising, etc.), there are some low-level ways to make cash in P2P.
One is Pure essence mining (requires 30 Mining) - members also have three additional essence mine teleport locations (see the Runecrafting guide). Another method is picking Flax (no skill required), and/or spinning Flax into Bowstrings (10 Crafting required; described in Fletching skill mentioned above). Fletching itself is a third low-level cash source - players will buy feathers, arrow shafts, headless arrows and arrows. All of the above items should be sold in bulk (no less than a hundred, but preferably thousands) to obtain the best prices - consult Tip.It's Market Forums to survey current values. Collecting secondary ingredients for Herblore is another money-maker. Players will buy bulk amounts of unicorn horns, limpwurt roots, red spiders' eggs, and snape grass. Again, check forums to determine current prices. Simply accumulating any necessary item in bulk can be a good way to make money: even something as ordinary as a vial can be saleable when you have 100 or 1000 of them for sale.
A fifth method for obtaining quick runes (or possibly cash) is "essence running". This activity supports higher level runecrafters who want to train but don't want to keep running to the bank for more essence - a hungry player can fill this gap. Show up at the altar with a full pack of the appropriate essence (regular for 6 basic runes, pure essence for member-crafted runes) and receive payment (runes and/or cash and/or matching noted essence) in return. Then run to the bank, change noted essence into essence (depositing your cash and/or runes), and repeat as many times as desired. Popular worlds for essence running include 66 and 99 (Laws), and 91 (Natures). If you don't yet have level 30 Mining (to get pure essence), you can try taking regular essence to the F2P world 16 Air altar.
If you are not yet comfortable enough in Runescape to try any of the above ideas, a far smaller (and smaller-paying!) job is available. Talk to the Wise Old Man, who lives just north of the bank in Draynor Village. Although he has a shady past, he has two things to offer: (1) he will look at your bank and tell you which F2P quest items you can safely throw out, and (2) he will hire you to run errands, in return for very small amounts of coins or experience. The tasks involve basic things like mining copper ore or baking bread. A former F2Per won't want to bother, but someone who is entirely new to Runescape might want to try it.
Tip.It's Official worlds are 7 (F2P) and 99 (P2P) - using these worlds will increase the chances of seeing another Tip.It forum user in-game (feel free to shout "Hey You Tip.Iter", or "HYT!" to folks you recognize).
On the most populous member world (2), Falador's east bank and park are used for trading with other members (world 1 behind Varrock's west bank is the place to trade with non-members). Since world 2 is often full, world 6 is a second option. Worlds 2 and 6 are also recommended for Shades of Mort'ton temple rebuilding. World 78 is the unofficial home of Pest Control. World 104 has become known for Trouble Brewing. As mentioned above in the Minor Money-making Tips section, popular worlds for Runecrafting essence running include 66 and 99 (Laws), 91 (Natures), and F2P world 16 (Airs).
A fun new experience will be the first time you kill an enemy and it drops a Clue scroll. This is a random occurrence from certain enemies, but following your Treasure Trail may lead you to unexpected riches! See the Treasure Trails guide for all the information you'll need.
All Runescape minigames are members only; look through Tip.It's Minigames guides to learn more about each one.
As a member you can challenge other members in Al Kharid's Duel Arena, defining the kind of battle and possibly risking a bet, winner-take-all. Except for your (optional) wager, you won't lose your items if you die.
Some fighting minigames, like Castle Wars and Pest Control also allow you to enjoy the benefits of combat without risk. If you die, you are completely healed and retain all of your items.
But other fighting minigames, such as Barrows and Mage Arena, are genuinely hazardous and are played for keeps.
Non-combat minigames also abound. After getting a Kitten in the Gertrudes' Cat quest, you can find information on raising it to a Cat or Overgrown Cat in the Pet Care guide. Playing Gnome Ball, exploring Gnome Cuisine, or pursuing the Bar Crawl are likewise diverting.
This decision is a personal one, and is sometimes hotly debated on Runescape fansite forums. The universal answer is whenever you can. A few people suggest waiting until you have very high skill levels. Others suggest finishing most of the F2P quests first to build up a respectable skill level. However, many people are confident that you can enjoy being a member at ANY level. It's believed easier to level up as a member, and the many novice-level member quests help considerably. Substantial P2P bank space is also a factor. Being a member provides access to many cool items and skills to make your lower levels more colourful and fun. "Whenever you can talk your family into paying for it" is the most frequent solution, lol.
As you increase in skills, or work through the Easy and Medium level member Quests, you will eventually become familiar with *all* of the new areas of RS you can enjoy as a member.
Playing RuneScape can be great fun. You get to meet lots of new and interesting people, and some say it can even be educational. And the internet is a wonderful tool that can help you learn about all kinds of things, and explore subjects like never before. But did you know that there are hidden dangers you must watch out for? We all know that using the internet is almost like letting people we don't know enter our homes, and that we must all be careful about how we use the Net. But in addition to the usual internet dangers, RuneScape has its own hidden traps that you must be aware of before you start playing. Traps? Like what? Well, scammers will stop at nothing to get your RuneScape username and password. Why? So they can empty your character's bank. Stupid, we know, but it happens everyday. There are also some dishonest players that will try to trick you into giving up valuable items and such. No, they won't steal your password, but they are scammers too. You can have fun whilst playing, but you also need to be vigilant and pay attention to what's happening around you -- if you don't, you may get scammed or tricked into losing some valuable item(s).
This guide has been divided into three separate sections, which cover:
The information in this section will help you recognize and avoid the most common RuneScape scams. You will also learn all about protecting your RuneScape account.
This section provides general information on how to stay safe while surfing the internet. Internet surfing can open a whole world of possibilities for you. You can learn about different cultures, meet new people and make new friends. But the internet can also expose you to many dangers. Learn about how to stay safe in this section.
Your computer is always at risk while you're on the internet. There are worms, viruses, trojans, keylogger programs, the list of potential dangers goes on. You have to be viligant about which sites you visit, and you must know what software you need to protect your computer. Learn what you should be doing to protect yourself in this section.
General Information
RuneScape and Jagex have a commitment to safety. They are constantly trying to improve their security and as a result they currently have Password Protected Accounts as well as a Bank PIN (Personal Identification Number) and Recovery Questions. It is in your best interests to have both a PIN and Recovery Questions, although neither is mandatory to play the game. To set your PIN go and talk to a banker in one of the many banks located around the RuneScape world. To set your recovery questions you need to log in to the secure section of www.runescape.com and click the set recovery questions button.
Jagex will NEVER send you ANY emails - EVER! Jagex will contact you through the message centre system on their website. Jagex will never ask you for your password. Ever. Not in an e-mail (and they don't even send e-mails, remember that!), not in-game. Even if you're contacted in-game by someone *claiming* to be a mod or Jagex Staff and they ask you for your password, do NOT give it to them. Ever! Even if they tell you that you will be banned or your account will be cancelled. Also, you should never click on a link in an email that *looks* like it's from Jagex. Remember, Jagex does not send e-mails! Ever!
Just because an email says it's from andrew@jagex.com or cutomerservice@jagex.com or something similar, does not mean it's actually from anyone who has anything to do with Jagex at all. Unfortunately, there are methods whereby users can pretend to be people they are not. This is known as "spoofing." Spoofers send e-mails to RuneScape players hoping to get you to go to a counterfeit RuneScape website. These sites are designed to trick you into giving out your RuneScape username and password. Some of these phoney sites can even have Trojan keylogger spyware hidden inside it. So even if you don't type in your password, you may have infected your computer with a keylogger just by accessing the counterfeit site. The keylogger will record your username and password the next time you log onto RuneScape and the next thing you know, you've been hacked. So what should you do if you get an e-mail from "Jagex"? DELETE IT!!!
Take a minute to think about how and when you use your password. The ONLY time you should use your RuneScape password is on the official RuneScape site. Nowhere else. Period. Never enter your password or recovery-questions into ANY website other than www.runescape.com or www.runescape.co.uk. And you should really have a separate password for any fansites you use, including RuneTips. Your RuneScape password should be different than all your other passwords, and should be used ONLY for RuneScape.
There are many RuneScape "fan sites" out there with only one intention in mind: to steal your password. Most players using a forum will either use their RuneScape username for their account name, or reveal it at some point on the forums. Just about anybody can set up a forum, and even make it look legitimate, but that doesn’t mean that it is safe to use the same password as you do for RuneScape.
Large legitimate fan sites, such as RuneTips, are often targets for people trying to find ways to steal passwords. Even if you feel 100% confident that a fan site is honest and safe, that does not keep you safe from whatever low-lifes may be targetting it. If by chance the fansite's password database is stolen, or even just a single user’s password is guessed and your RuneScape password is the same as your forum password, you are an easy target. So be safe. Make your RuneScape password unique. Do not use it anywhere else. And while you're at it, set your bank pin and put anything valuable in the bank when you log out.
Lastly, lots of people we know access the internet from computers other than their own. If you're playing RuneScape at a friend's house, Internet Cafe or library, you must take extra precautions to safeguard your RuneScape name and password. First, make sure nobody is standing behind you watching you log on! This is more common than you would know. And while you're playing, never leave your computer unattended while you are logged in. Always log off properly before you leave, even if it's only for a minute. Finally, know the risks. Sharing a computer is a great convenience, but you MUST be careful.
Common RuneScape Scams
Scamming in RuneScape involves one player cheating another player. This can be to get your items, or control of your character. What follows is list of the most common scams in RuneScape. Hopefully, this will help you recognize a scam when you see one -- and remember, if you're not sure about something or it seems too good to be true, it probably is! It's better to insult an honest player than to deal with a dishonest one.
How to Avoid Scams (and what to do about it!)
Players can easily avoide being scammed by following these points:
So you've followed all these tips and still you've been scammed. What should you do? The only thing you can do is work to get the items you lost back. JAGeX will not give players back the items they lost. Many players turn to JAGeX when they get scammed. However, JAGeX will only say that there is nothing they can do. They do not give items back because people would take advantage of getting free items. If you get scammed, you should raise your skills to get money or merchant some items. In time, you will be able to buy new versions of the items you lost. One thing's for sure -- at least you will have learned a valuable lesson!
Personal safety
Even though you might think that this is a boring thing to read about, it is actually of greater importance than anything else in this guide. While you may think that you're completely safe to do and say whatever you want online it's always better to be safe than sorry! Back in 1998, two individuals were so concerned with the amount of information kids and young people give out to total strangers while chatting, they decided to try a little experiment. How hard would it be to figure out someone's name and exact location just by asking simple questions? Turns out it isn't very hard at all. Before you go any further, please take a moment to read It Could Happen to You. It just could save your life.
Did you learn anything? Good. Now when you're surfing the net, playing RuneScape or chatting with your on-line "friends", just follow these simple guidelines and you can enjoy the internet to its full potential. We here at Tip.it want you, your family and your friends to have the best possible experience online.
Keeping your Computer Safe
Your computer needs to be safe as well! If you do not take correct precautions, 'hackers' may be able to gain access to your RuneScape account, or your entire computer, including internet bank accounts and credit card details.
If you follow these 7 rules you should be safe. Well OK, at least you'll be 99% safer than other players!
Software Recommendations
Here is a list of highly recommended software programs that will help keep you and your computer safe. Some are free, some are not. But remember, price has nothing to do with effectiveness. Some free programs are actually better and more efficient than expensive ones. But all the programs in this list are recommended by RuneTips:
Antivirus programs: You should always run one of these, update it and scan twice weekly. You should also configure it to scan all incoming email.
Firewalls: These control what information your computer sends out, and which computers it may connect to. If you browse the internet without one, 'hackers' can walk straight through your system.
Spyware Agents: Many websites and programs that you may have used actually spy on you! As well as being a serious privacy concern, these programs slow down your computer. You should update and scan with a Spyware agent every two days if you can!
For the ulitmate in security, you'll want to have one of each of these installed. To make it easy, you can buy them all at once. Try Norton Internet Security or McAfee Internet Security Suite.
And of course you should always check for updates to your browser and operating system. Windows Update and Apple Downloads are the place to go.
In your many endeavours to explore and experience the wonders of the RuneScape world, you will have undoubtedly come across the problems of traversing great distances in the shortest possible time - to get to that party on time, the next clue location or to meet your friend like you promised. Read on to learn about the many ways of saving time, taking shortcuts and avoiding long walks in the wonderful scenery. You might want to use the Jagex world map which you can access via the link on the toolbar above your game window, or alternatively utilise our own interactive world map when getting around. The transportation icons (arrows) on the maps quickly identify key locations.
In the Player Controls menu in the RuneScape interface, you have the option of choosing to walk or run between where you are at the moment and your destination. Running is twice the speed of walking.
To select run mode you need to click on the run icon
found on the Game Options menu.
However, the two factors of Energy and Weight will play a vital role when you consider whether to walk or run. When you walk, you do not lose energy. When you run, you lose energy depending on how much weight you are carrying. The more weight you are carrying, the faster you will lose energy while running. Energy recovers automatically back up to 100% when you are not running. To check your weight, you need to open the equipment stats menu. The total weight carried is shown.
Members can wear the 'Boots of Lightness' obtainable from the Temple of Ikov which reduce your weight by 4kg.
Members with the necessary hunter level can wear one of two capes to further reduce their weight. These capes are made from furs obtained through Falconry. Spotted capes reduce the wearer's weight by 2-3 kg and require a Hunter level of 40. Spottier capes reduce weight by 4-5 kg and require a Hunter level of 66. See the clothing section in the Hunter guide for details. Players who have the necessary points playing the Barbarian Assault Mini game can purchase a set of Penance Gloves that reduce their weight by 4-5 kg.
For members, the higher your agility the faster your energy will recover. For level 1 agility you regain 1% energy around every 7 seconds. For level 99 agility, you regain 1% energy around every 2.5 seconds. This restoration advantage does carry over to free servers as well.
The following items are usefull to speed up the rate your energy is restored:
It is also possible to run for a short time instead of running until your energy is consumed. Just hold CTRL when you click and you will run until you reach that spot. The next time you click, assuming you aren't still holding CTRL, you will be walking again.
Depending on your magic level, and whether you are a member or not, you can use several different spells to teleport you to major cities and locations all across the RuneScape world. Refer to the magic guide for more details on these spells, however some are shown in the table below. Spells in grey rows are members only. However, there are quest requirements for using certain teleports. To use the Ardougne teleport, you must have completed the Plague City quest. To use the watchtower teleport, you must have completed the Watch Tower quest. To use the Trollheim teleport, you must have completed the Eadgar's Ruse quest. To use the Ape Atoll teleport, you must have completed the Awowogei part of the Recipe for Disaster quest.
Members with the appropriate magic level can create teleport tablets at a lecturn built in the study of a player-owned house (see Construction skill guide). Once enchanted, a teleport tablet can be used by any member regardless of magic level. A teleport tablet is used by breaking it, and thus has only one use. Members can also build portals in their houses, and focus them as permanent free teleports to specific cities (Ardougne, Camelot, Canifis/Kharyrll, Falador, Lumbridge, Varrock, or Watchtower/Yanille). Any houseguest can use a portal regardless of magic level, as long as they meet any quest requirement for that teleport.
| Teleportation Spells | |||
| Pic | Level | Spell name | Location |
| 0 | Lumbridge Home Port | Courtyard just outside Lumbridge castle (See note) | |
| 25 | Varrock Teleport | City centre just south of the main statue and just north of the general store | |
| 31 | Lumbridge Teleport | Courtyard just outside Lumbridge castle | |
| 37 | Falador Teleport | City centre just south of the statue and north of the Inn | |
| 40 | House teleport | Your house portal (must own house) | |
| 45 | Camelot Teleport | Outside the main gate of Camelot castle, east of Seers' Village | |
| 51 | Ardougne Teleport | Centre of the market between all the stalls | |
| 58 | Watchtower Teleport | Second floor of the watchtower just outside Yanille | |
| 61 | Trollheim Teleport | On top of the mountain | |
| 64 | Ape Atoll teleport | Marim on Ape Atoll | |
Note: The "Lumbridge Home Port" teleport spell requires no runes and no experience is gained from it. Its primary use is to return newer players to familiar grounds, if they should happen to get lost. This teleport spell takes time to cast, so is not suitable for combat situations as, if you get interrupted, the spell will fail. You can only cast this spell once every 30 minutes.

If you have completed the members Desert Treasure quest then you will also have the ability to use the Ancient Magicks Teleports. These are listed below. The Canifis teleport (lvl 66 magic) is useful for people travelling to the Barrows and for people wanting to talk to the Canifis Slayer Master. The different teleports to wilderness locations are very useful when PKing.

If you have completed the members Lunar Diplomacy quest then you will also have the ability to use the Lunar Magicks Teleports. Lunar Magicks offers single teleports and telegroup spells, allowing you to teleport everyone standing within one space of you when you cast the spell. Those desiring to be in the group must have 'Accept aid' on, and will receive the option to be teleported to the location. The Waterbirth teleports are convenient for Dagganoth King groups. The Barbarian Outpost teleports may be useful for training agility, heading up to the Lighthouse to kill regular Dagganoths or joining in the Barbarian Assault Minigame. The Port Khazard teleports could simplify Trawler Fishing expeditions. The Ice Plateau teleports may be useful for agility training or PKing. The Lunar Magick teleport spells are listed below.

Within the lands of RuneScape there are a number of items you can obtain during the course of your travels and adventures that will greatly assist your getting to places in a hurry.
Enchanted Lyre (members only)
When you finish The Fremennik Trials quest, you get a lyre. You can enchant it by offering a sacrifice at the Fossegrimen altar southwest of Rellekka. Once enchanted, you can use it to teleport to Rellekka. Offering a raw shark earns two charges, a sea turtle earns three, and a manta ray ray earns four teleport charges. Wearing a Ring of Charos(a) (see Garden of Tranquillity quest), you can charm the Fossegrimen into believing that your raw bass is a small shark, getting two charges. Once you've used up the teleport charges, you have to recharge it by making another offering at the Fossegrimen altar.
Ectophial (members only)
The Ectophial is the reward for completing the Ghosts Ahoy! quest. Click on it to empty it at your feet, and you will immediately be transported to the Ectofuntus at Port Phasmatys. Your first action there should be to refill your Ectophial, to have it ready for your next use. It's also a handy item for worshipping the Ectofuntus - after you fill your Buckets with Slime in the basement, use it to avoid climbing 4 sets of stairs to get back to ground level. Port Phasmatys is also a popular destination due to the Furnace just steps away from the Bank, as well as a Range. For those without Ancient Magick, the Ectophial is also one method to reach nearby Canifis and Mort Myre.
Elf teleport crystal (members only)
Members receive an elf teleport crystal during the Mourning's Ends part I quest. It teleports the player to Lletya in the Elven Land of Tirannwn. The first crystal you receive during the quest holds 4 teleport charges. When the charges have been used up, Eluned (a Roving Elf) will give it 3 new charges for 750gp, and your next recharge will cost less. Elf teleport crystals with one charge are also dropped by Elf warriors.
Skull sceptre
The Skull sceptre is the first Free to Play teleport item, and will take you to the Barbarian Village (south of Edgeville). It is obtained by collecting monster drops in the Stronghold of Security. The pieces required are a skull right half, skull left half, bottom of sceptre and top of sceptre. Assemble the four parts together, making a Skull Sceptre with 5 teleport charges. When the fifth teleport is used, the sceptre disintegrates. Then you can build yourself a new one by obtaining the 4 parts and putting them together.
Pharaoh's Sceptre (members only)
The Pharaoh's sceptre is obtained from the Pyramid Plunder mini game, or may be purchased from other players. It can be used to teleport to any of the three pyramids:
The Sceptre can hold three charges. Once you have used the three charges, the Guardian Mummy will recharge it for 24 combs or pottery trinkets, or 12 stone trinkets, or 6 gold trinkets.
Camulet (members only)
The Camulet is a reward from the Enakhra's Lament quest. In addition to letting you speak to camels, it will teleport you to the center of the Enakrah's Lament pyramid. You can then go up the ladders to the surface. For those without a Pharaoh's Sceptre, the Camulet is helpful for switching to Ancient Magicks, since you arrive just west of the Jaldroacht pyramid. You can recharge the Camulet by using ugthanki dung on it. This is acquired by using hotsauce from the kebab seller in Pollnivneach on the nearby camel trough. See The Feud quest guide for dung details.
Grand Seed Pod (members only)
The Grand Seed pod, a reward from the Gnome Delivery mini game, is useful for transportation back to the Grand Tree. There are two ways of using it. The first is to launch it (outdoors only) and wait for it to be seen by a Gnome pilot who will transport you back to the Grand Tree. This will also gain you some farming experience points. The second way is to squash which will result in you being teleported immediately to the Grand Tree King. This method, though faster, will cause you to temporarily lose 5 farming levels. Neither method functions past level 30 Wilderness and each pod can only be used the once.
Once you have completed the members Tree Gnome Village quest, you can use the various Spirit Trees dotted around the world to aid you in your travels. There are 4 in total:
Talk to any of them to be teleported to the main one in the Tree Gnome village, who will then teleport you to any of the others if you ask. They all look similar.
Once you have completed the members Grand Tree Quest, you can take advantage of the many Gnome glider locations to fly across RuneScape - free of charge! Shown below is the map you see when you click on the Gnome pilot, with the translations shown as well. When you fly between two locations, a small glider will be shown moving across the map. The Karamja location is northeast of Shilo Village on the eastern coast of the island. After completing the One Small Favour Quest, you will also have the option of flying to the Feldip Hills south of the Ogre city of Gu'tanoth. Note that you cannot fly from the Digsite location, as the pilot is practicing "creative landings".
If you are doing or have completed the Monkey Madness quest, you can talk to Daero at Blurberry's Bar (in the Grand Tree) to be taken to the secret military glider hangar. From here, you can fly to Crash Island which is located east of Ape Atoll. You can talk to the gnome on Crash Island to take a boat trip to the Atoll. You can follow the process backwards to return.
Once you have completed the An Enlightened Journey quest, you can sail high above the ground on each of the subsequent routes you help Auguste to unlock.
Once you have successfully managed to unlock the route to a destination, you can travel from there back to Entrana or any other destination you have also unlocked. To travel to a particular destination you need to burn 1 log of the type you used to unlock that route.
| Hot Air Balloon Destinations | |||
| Destination | Log to burn | Firemaking Lvl. required | Nearby Features |
| Entrana | Normal log | 20 | Herblore store, Hops farming patch, Crafting guide, Law Altar, entrance to Entrana dungeon with Dramen tree and portal to Level 32 wilderness |
| Taverly | Normal log | 20 | Tree farming patch, Herblore store, Druids circle, entrance to Member's Dungeon, Taverley |

| Castle Wars | Yew log | 50 | Castle Wars, Jiggig and Zogre coffins, Observatory |
| Grand Tree | Magic log | 60 | Tree Gnome Stronghold, Gnome agility training area, tree and fruit tree farming patches, Grand Tree |
Note: The levels required to burn logs in the air is different to the levels required to burn them on the ground. Also, you gain no firemaking experience for the log used to travel via a Hot Air Balloon once you have unlocked a route.
Intrepid hunters, once they have completed the Eagle’s Peak quest, have the opportunity to harness these noble birds of prey and ride them between four of the different hunting locations. This is of great benefit for those hunters who are unable to access the fairy rings network.
You may travel from the woodlands to the following three hunting locations – desert, jungle or snow. From these three locations you can only travel back to the woodlands.
So if you wanted to travel from the heat of the desert hunting area to the chill of the snow hunting area, your route would have to be via the woodlands hunting area hub. Here you can disembark and catch a connecting flight to your desired destination.
For further details refer to our Hunter Guide.
There are many ports where you board ships by paying 30gp to an NPC (free if wearing the Ring of Charos(a)) to get to another location. Jagex has added a right-click "pay fee" option (avoids lengthy discussions about customs); it quickly deducts 30gp from your pack. Below is the map you see while travelling on a ship.
There are other voyages you can take that are not shown on the above map. These are sometimes part of new quests.
Trader Stan has made his fleet of ships available for private charter around the world of RuneScape. To charter a ship, simply speak to Trader Stan or any one of his sailors.
The prices for chartering a ship are shown in the tables below.
If you are wearing the ring of Charos(a) when you book a charter, these prices will be halved.
Players who have completed the Cabin Fever quest are deemed to be experienced sailors. The price they pay to charter a ship will be less. (Wearing a ring of Charos(a) will further reduce this charge).
Note: Ports marked with * can only be accessed on completion of a particular quest. To sail from or to Port Phasmatys you need to have completed the Ghosts Ahoy! quest. For Port Tyras you need to have completed the Regicide quest. If you have not completed the required quest the destination will not be shown on the selection map.

Members can build canoes and sail them up and down the River Lum, which runs from the wilderness to Lumbridge.
You can make four different types of canoes based on your woodcutting level:
| Canoes | |||||||||
| Pic | Lvl | Canoe Name | Distance | ||||||

57 | Waka | 4 stations or Wilderness | ||||||
Note: Only the Waka canoe can travel to the wilderness.
To make a canoe chop down the "canoe tree" at any station. You can use any type of hatchet. Click to shape the canoe and choose your design. Once you have made your canoe you can decide which station you want to go to. There is no canoe tree in the wilderness. The wilderness is an ARRIVAL DESTINATION ONLY. You can travel between(from North to South):
If you wish to activate the teleport function of a particular piece of jewellery while it is in your inventory, simply right click on it and select the rub option. This will bring up another interface allowing you to select a destination or remain where you are.
To activate the teleport function of an item of jewellery while you are wearing it, go to the equipment menu, right click on it and select the operate option. Again this will bring up an interface allowing you to select your destination.
Note: The ring of life does not have a user-activated teleport option.
Amulet of Glory
This amulet is crafted from the dragonstone gem, obtainable only from the crystal chest in Taverly. To open this chest, you will need the crystal key which is made by joining its' two halves. Both the 'loop' half and the 'teeth' half are rare drops from all monsters that also drop gems. You can rub it while in your inventory, or operate it while wearing it and choose your destination. It doesn't work past level 30 wilderness. After four teleports, you will have to recharge it at the Fountain of Heroes located in the basement of the Hero's guild. At level 47 Construction, Heroes can mount an uncharged amulet of glory in their quest hall for infinite teleports to the usual four destinations:
Games Necklace
An enchanted Sapphire Necklace (be careful, not an amulet) initially has 8 charges. Rubbing it or operating it will teleport you to eithe the Burthorpe Games room or the Barbarian Outpost, just outside the Barbarian Assault Minigame area. The necklace will not function past level 20 wilderness.
The Games room is close to the Burthorpe Slayer master, as well as the Rogues' Den and the Warrior's guild. It's also convenient to the Hero's guild if you are travelling there to recharge Amulets of Glory.
At the Barbarian Outpost you can visit the Barbarian agility arena or the Barbarian Assult Minigame area. It is also convenient for the Lighthouse to kill regular Dagganoths, for Baxtorian Falls and the Fire Giants there, or to get to the Gnome Stronghold via the agility shortcut.
Ring of dueling
This is made by enchanting an Emerald ring. When you rub it or operate it, you have a choice to teleport to either the Castle Wars area (west of Yanille and south of the Observatory), or to the Duel Arena east of Al Kharid. It has 8 teleport charges and does not work past level 20 wilderness.
Ring of Life
Made by enchanting a Diamond ring. Whenever your hit points fall to below 10% of your total, you will automatically be teleported to Lumbridge. The ring disintegrates after a single use. It doesn't work past level 30 wilderness or while duelling, and it does not have a user-activated teleport option. The Ring of life will *not* save you if your enemy can wipe out your last 10% of your HP at once.
Ali Morrisane has started a network of Magic Carpet travel routes through the desert. It's twice as fast as running and you can travel to a variety of locations within the Desert. It's particularly useful if you are doing one of the Desert-related quests or simply want to get to a Desert city without having to endure the danger of dying of thirst and being attacked by wolves. Each trip is 200gp, 100gp after doing Rogue trader minigame, and further discounted if wearing the Ring of Charos(a), and certain routes will only be available after you've done certain quests as shown on the map.
| Click the thumbnail below to see a map of the Magic Carpet Routes |
|
Dwarven Mine Carts
If you have started the Giant Dwarf quest, then you will have access to the underground city of Keldagrim and can utilise their system of mining carts. For a fee of 100 or 150gp (discounted if wearing the Ring of Charos(a)), you can buy a ticket to travel to and from Keldagrim (the Dwarven City) and these locations:
Jungle Cart
Vigroy has a cart in Shilo Village, and will cart you up to Brimhaven (by the dock) for a fee. The fee varies from 20 to 200 gp and is based on how many coins you are carrying at the time. Hajedy at the other end also has a cart and is willing to take you on a journey in the opposite direction for a variable fee. Of course, you will need to have completed the Shilo Village quest to use this method.
The Fairy Rings, accessed by starting the Fairy Tale pt. II Cure a Queen quest, provide an extensive network of travel. NOTE: you do NOT need to meet the quest herblore and farming requirements to get far enough in the quest to access the rings!
You must be wielding a Dramen staff to use any fairy ring. All fairy rings outside of the Lost City of Zanaris will only take you back to Zanaris, where you can dial another destination. Using the Zanaris fairy ring brings up three dials (like a combination lock) which you can click to change to different letters. Each click turns the dial clockwise to the next letter (the letters are not in alphabetical order). When the combination is adjusted as desired, click the "Teleport to this location" words at the bottom.
The first list below shows the useful destinations by roughly dividing the RuneScape map into three sections: West, Central, and East. The West area includes the members-only areas west of Taverly, excluding Karamja. The Central area includes the F2P map area plus all of members-only Karamja. The East section is again members-only, covering Morytania and the Kharidian Desert. These rough divisions are intended to help players plan their travel. The locations are listed from north to south for each area.

There are other little ways of sneaking around and taking short cuts, listed and described below.
The Jail teleport
You can essentially teleport from the Shantay Pass to Port Sarim. Talk to Shantay and tell him you are an outlaw and 'Prepare to Die!' He will put you in the jail next to him and ask you to pay 5 gp to leave. Keep on refusing and you will be taken to the 'high security' prison at Port Sarim, where you can simply walk out and go your merry way. This method works on f2p as well as p2p.
Magic Guild portals
On the second floor of the Mage's guild in Yanille there are three portals that will teleport you to different wizard-related locations.
Dark Wizard teleport
This is a free teleport from the Dark Wizards' Tower (west of Falador, north of Makeover Mage and Crafting Guild) to Lumbridge Swamp. Go to the top floor of the Dark Wizards' Tower and talk to Zandar Horfyre. He tries to get you to leave. If you refuse, he teleports you to Lumbridge Swamp, very close to the Lost City entrance shed (west of the swamp mine, north of water rune altar).
The Abyss
The Abyss is located in another plane and only accessible to members through the Zamorakian Mage northeast of Edgeville. For detailed information, see our map and commentary about it. Once inside, you can choose which rift to exit through to end up at any of the Runecrafting altars. Read our Runecrafting guide on the advantages and disadvantages of this mode of transport.
Ardougne-Wilderness teleport
In the west of the main city of Ardougne, behind the castle of King Lathas and in front of the large walls of West Ardougne there is a small hut with a lever. Pulling this lever will teleport you to another hut in level 54 wilderness. You will need a knife or a weapon to escape from the hut in the wilderness. This is widely used by members going PKing in the wilderness. You can also pull the opposite lever in the wilderness to teleport to this hut in Ardougne. Neither lever will work if the Tele Block spell is still in effect on you.
Mort Myre Swamp
Once you have completed the In Search of the Myreque quest, you will be able to use the following two methods to travel through the Mort Myre Swamp more quickly. You can go down the trap door behind the Canifis Inn into the Myreque Dungeon, search the wall, and take the other exit into 'the Hollows' in Mort Myre Swamp. Proceed south from here and over the bridge until you find a boat which you can ride to arrive in Mort'ton. You can get a ride back if you pay Cyreg Paddlehorn 10gp.
Dying
When you die in RuneScape, you end up in Lumbridge Castle and only keep your three most valuable items (if you are carrying stackable items such as coins, runes or arrows, you will only keep the three most valuable; if you have nothing but 100K gp, you would keep 3 gp.) If you were 'skulled' then you keep no items. You keep an extra item in both cases if you were using the 'Protect Item' prayer. Once you have completed the members-only Recruitment Drive quest, you can end up in Falador when you die instead. You can change your spawn point between Lumbridge and Falador by talking to Sir Tiffy Cashein in Falador Park.
Random events were originally placed in Runescape to stop cheaters. They can occur at any time and any place - while you are doing anything! There are two types. Firstly, there are general events that can occur while you are doing anything - such as a genie appearing - and all you have to do is respond to them. Secondly, there are skill specific events which occur when you have been training that skill for a while. Again, all you have to do is respond to them. Both members and non-members alike can get all the random events listed, EXCEPT where specifically indicated.
In this guide, you'll find all the different random events that can occur while you're playing. We have provided details of when they appear, what they do and what you should do when one happens to you. A quote from Jagex about random events' original intent is provided for you below:
| Paul Gower on the official forums said: |
| You will NOT die at random times. The strength of the monster does vary depending on the strength you are, so you won't be instantly splatted, the monsters are easy enough to run from.
It's quite easy to see the rocks which take away the pickaxes when you click on them - therefore you don't and use a different rock for a few seconds. You are NOT going to lose your axe unless you really are not paying attention. All these things (referring to Random Events) are easy to avoid once you know what they are and you are not a botter (meaning a cheater). They do not happen fast enough to put much of a dent on your levelling. They do break the monotony up slightly in mining and we will be increasing the variety further. |
General random events are not skill limited, they can happen anywhere and anytime and are there to make sure you are awake and at the keyboard.
| Mysterious Old Man "Greetings" | |
|
A lonely man seeking company?
The Mysterious Old Man (MOM) appears and interrupts whatever it is that you were doing. Some say he's just lonely, so if he talks to you, you should talk back. If you do, he'll reward you with a gift, possibly kebabs, spinach rolls, gp, gems, tallismen, half keys and caskets (rarely). If you ignore him and do not reply he will teleport you to a remote location. |
| The Maze | |
|
Sometimes, Myserious Old Men can't be bothered talking to you, and will teleport you to a maze. Complete the maze as fast as possible, and you will receive a valuable reward - possibly hundreds of runes, arrows and ores. There are also some chests inside the maze which you can search, but it slows you down. The longer you take to complete the maze, the less your reward will be. | |
| Strange Boxes | |
|
Also given by the MOM. If you're paying attention, you might even notice him saying "Here, take this!". Click on the box and answer a simple question regarding the numbers and shapes on the box. If you get the question right, you'll receive some gp, a gem or maybe even a half key! If you ignore the box or answer the question incorrectly, the box will duplicate, filling your inventory until it's full. Once it's full, the boxes will start to stack! If this happens, you'll have to open each one and answer the question; you can't bank the boxes or drop them. You'll only get the reward once you've answered them all, and you'll only get one reward for all of them, not one reward per box. | |
| Miming | |
|
The MOM teleports you to a mime artist, and you have to follow his actions. Rewards from this include Mime clothing (Mask, top, pants, gloves and boots) and the ability to perform 4 new emote animations. | |
| Pinball | |
|
This time the MOM challenges you for a little game. It's called pinball, but human pinball would be more correct. You have to tag 10 poles. You can only tag poles with rings around them. If you tag a wrong pole, or try to leave before you're finished, your score will be set to 0, forcing you to start all over again. Rewards include noted gems, ores or food. | |
| Bob, the Jagex Cat (members only) "Hi, my name is Bob." | ||
|
What it does: Introduced on one Friday the 13th in 2004, Bob the Jagex Cat has become the unofficial "pet" of Runescape. He wanders all over the member world, and if you're lucky enough to spot him, you can brag to all you meet that you've seen him. |
What you should do: If you're wearing your Amulet of Catspeak, go ahead and speak to him. He'll tell you some jokes, and maybe even hint that he's really a famous Runescape God. If you're not wearing your amulet, Bob will simply ignore you. |
| Postie Pete (members only) "Must be heading off!" | ||
|
What it does: Pete is the official "postman" of Runescape. As well as taking care of the Postbag every month he also wanders all over the members world delivering mail to various NPCs or even come to visit you, and if you're lucky enough to spot him, you can brag to all you meet that you've seen him. |
What you should do: If you aren't busy, speak to him and you may be interested in what he has to say, although he's a bit crazy he can even speak wyvern! |
| Cap'n Hand "My mistake, milord/milady, I was thinking yer to be..." | ||
|
What it does: He's just a lonely sailor looking for company, but he's a bit confused. Maybe he's been away at sea a little too long? If he speaks to you, maybe he's simply got you confused with someone else...an old shipmate, maybe? |
What you should do: Speak to him and receive a reward. He's been known to give gp and uncut gems to people that give him a couple moments of attention. Other loot he hands out includes food items like kebabs and spinach rolls, and sometimes even half keys. Ignore him, and you may be sorry. Cap'n Hand is a pirate after all, and pirates are usually armed and dangerous. He'll attack you with his crossbow if you try his patience. |
| The "Certers" "Hey there, I need your help..." | ||
|
What it does: Ever notice that you can withdraw multiple items from your bank as notes? In RuneScape Classic, "notes" were called "certificates" or "certs". Only a few kinds of items could be converted into "certs", and to do it, you had to visit an certificate exchange stall. Three of those stalls were run by three brothers: Niles, Miles and Giles. Since their retirement from the "certing" business, Niles, Miles & Giles have been amusing themselves giving simple tests to passing players. |
What you should do: Talk to them and answer the multiple-choice question they ask you. All you have to do is identify the spinning object and select the correct answer from the choices you're given. Get it right, and you'll be rewarded with some coins, various food items, or an uncut gem. If you fail the test or ignore them, they'll try to convert items from your inventory into banknotes, then teleport you away! See below for a sample test: |
| ||
| Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde (members only) "Excuse me, can you please help me?" | ||
|
What it does: Famous scientist Dr. Jekyll has a problem...he's missing some ingredients for the potion he's making to stop "transforming". He may ask you for a guam leaf or some other herb he needs to complete his potion. |
What you should do: Talk to him quickly, and don't worry if you don't have what he's asked you for. The good doctor doesn't hold a grudge, provided you speak to him to show you care about his problem. He may even reward you with some of his other helpful potions if you speak to him. If you ignore him, he'll think you don't care about him, and he'll transform into the fearsome Mr. Hyde. Before he turns back into the gentle Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde will attack you using melee, and his combat level depends on your combat level, so it's not always fixed. Varies from 14 - 159. |
| Drunken Dwarf "Hello der..." | ||
|
What it does: A drunken dwarf, similar to the old man will appear anywhere and give you a beer and a kebab. |
What you should do: Talk to him straight away and receive a kebab and a beer! If you ignore him he will start attacking you weakly with badly aimed rocks. You cannot attack him back. |
| "Evil" Bob "You're my slave now..." | ||
|
What it does: Not to be confused with "Bob the Jagex Cat", this feline's name tells you everything you need to know about him. Friendly, he isn't, evil, he is. Evil Bob likes to drag unsuspecting travellers away to a warped plane of reality called ScapeRune to serve as his slaves. Everything in ScapeRune is backwards. |
What you should do: Talk to Evil Bob to find out what he'd like you to do. He'll ask you to catch him some fish. You'll need help from his other slaves to do it. Talk to Evil Bob's slaves, and they will tell you how to get the fish Evil Bob has asked for. You will fish up a cooked fish, which you will have to uncook on a nearby pot. Once you're finished, use the fish with Evil Bob, and after a few repetitions of this, he will fall asleep. Now's your chance to escape! Run to the the portal, and you'll be teleported back to where you were. You'll receive xp in a skill as a reward. |
| ||
| Evil Chicken "Begone, MUHAHAHAHA!" | ||
|
What it does: If you come under attack from this uniquely malignant fowl, be prepared for a tough fight. |
What you should do: Stay and fight it and pick up the feathers, meat, bones, and egg it drops, or just run away. The chicken's combat level depends on your combat level, so it's not always fixed. Varies from 14 - 159, and it attacks with magic. |
| Freaky Forester | ||
|
What it does: This strange man may teleport you to a clearing in some distant forest to help him kill the pheasant of his choice. |
What you should do: Do what he asks - if you bring him the carcass of the correct pheasants, he may reward you with some of his unique clothes, which consist of a "lederhosen" top, shorts or hat. If you ignore him or kill the wrong birds, you'll be teleported to a distant place. |
| Frogs | ||
|
What it does: Throughout the ages, many tales have been told about princes and princesses cruelly transformed into frogs. A small army of frogs may come to you while you're minding your own business, and they will ask you to help them by giving their prince or princess a simple kiss to restore their true form. |
What you should do: Go ahead and kiss the frog prince (for female characters) or princess (for male characters). Doing it will get you a "frog token", that can be exchanged at the Varrock Clothes Shop for a frog mask or a prince/princess outfit. And don't worry about warts...these little froggies are wart-free! |
| Genie "Greetings Master/Mistress..." | ||
|
What it does: He appears and gives you a magic lamp. When you rub the magic lamp, you get an options screen like the one below where you can get free xp for any skill of your choice. The amount of xp you get is provided below the picture: (Note: you cannot bank or trade the lamp) |
What you should do: Answer him to receive your lamp. If you don't answer him, he will scatter your inventory across the floor, or teleport you somewhere else. |
| Grab the evil twin | ||
|
What it does: Molly appears and she says she's having some problems with her evil twin. She's managed to lock the evil twin somewhere, but evil as the twin is, she's taken 4 innocent civilians with her! Your job is to pick out the evil twin. |
What you should do: Use the claw to catch the evil twin. Move it until the red marker is right on the correct girl (the one that looks like Molly), then hit grab. You have just 2 tries though -- if you fail you will be teleported. If you do succeed, you will receive a reward (a few gems), and you will be teleported to where you were before you got the random event. |
![]() | ||
| Highwayman "You there! Stand and Deliver!" | ||
|
What it does: Rick Turpentine, the notorious highwayman, wishes to atone for his life of crime by giving out free valuables. |
What you should do: Just speak to him and accept what he offers you. If you ignore his generous offer, he'll get angry and attack you. The loot he gives can be practically anything, from a few gp or a mere kebab or other food item, to a half key or a gem. |
| Lost and Found Office "There has been a fault in the teleportation matrix..." | ||
|
What it does: Public transportation isn't always perfect. Even the RuneScape Teleportation Matrix suffers from the occasional glitch. While teleporting, you may suddenly find yourself stuck in some abyssal hole. |
What you should do: Determine which of the nearby levers is the odd one out, then pull it. If you choose correctly, you will receive an apology, some teleport runes or essence (when essence mining) for your trouble, and you'll be on your way. |
| Prison Pete | ||
|
What it does: You are taken to ScapeRune, where Prison Pete helps you escape. |
What you should do: Pop the correct balloons in order to get the key you need to leave. He will give you a small reward, such as an unidentified herb, for your efforts. |
| ||
| Quiz Master "This is your lucky day..." | ||
|
What it does: The enthusiastic host of the greatest quiz show in RuneScape, "Odd One Out", may invite you to compete for some valuable prizes. |
What you should do: Choose which of the items you're shown is the one that doesn't belong. Get enough questions right, and you'll be asked to choose between cold, hard cash and a "mystery box". But choose wisely...the box can contain something good like a valuable gem, but it can also contain useless junk. |
| Sandwich Lady "Sandwiches, ..." | ||
|
What it does: She appears and offers you a treat from her tray. |
What you should do: Pick the treat she tells you to take, and you can use it as food. Pick wrong and she will teleport you away. If you are unsure what the item is that she is offering you then click the 'key' in the bottom right corner. |
| Security Guard "Stop right there!" | ||
|
What it does: The Security Guard’s job is to wander around looking for players whose recovery questions haven't been set. He’s out to remind you to set your recovery questions so that you can get your character back should something happen, such as forgetting your password, or being hacked and having your account and/or password stolen. |
What you should do: If you talk to him and listen to what he has to tell you about security, you’ll be rewarded. He’s been known to give out coins, food items like kebabs, half keys, gems, and other various items. You can attack him, but don’t bother – he’s hard to kill, and he doesn’t drop anything if you do manage to kill him. |
| Swarm of Bees | ||
|
What it does: This annoying swarm will attack you hitting ticklish 1's and 2's while you are doing anything. |
What you should do: You cannot attack and kill them, so run away until they stop chasing you - pest repellent and bug sprays don't work. |
| Strange Plant (members only) | ||
![]() |
What it does: While doing anything a strange plant will start growing next to you. It will be fully grown in about a minute or so. |
What you should do: When it's fully grown 'pick' the plant to get a 'strange fruit'. When eaten, the fruit replenishes 30% of your energy and removes poison like an anti-poison potion. If don't pick the fruit, the plant will attack you and poison you. Poison does 2 damage per hit. |
| Drill Demon "Drop and give me 100 pushups, Private!" | ||
|
What it does: Sergeant Damien, the drill demon, appears to you and requests that you complete a drill in order to be trained for his army. |
What you should do: Follow his orders. He will command you to do push ups, do sit ups, do star jumps, or jog in place. Move to the mat with the corresponding sign board to complete the task. As a reward you will receive one of his camouflage pieces of armour, which can no longer be traded. |
![]() | ||
| Pious Pete "I'm sorry to drag you away from your tasks, but I need a little help with something." | ||
|
What it does: Pious Pete teleports you from what you are doing to a church to relight his candles. |
What you should do: Relight all the candles using the arrows and the fire shaped light button. Once all the candles are light you will be returned to where you were with a little prize for your efforts. Rewards can include big bones and half keys. |
![]() | ||
Skills-related random events only occur when you are training a specific skill. Like general random events, they can happen anytime while you're skill training, so make sure you're paying attention. If you don't, you may end up getting attacked or losing some equipment!
While mining, be on the lookout for these events:
| Rock Golem "Rargh, Flee human!" | ||
|
What it does: The Rock Golem will appear and attack you while you are mining. It's combat level depends on your combat level, so it's not always fixed. Varies from 14 - 159. As well as its primary melee attack it can use a secondary range-based attack to throw rocks at you! |
What you should do: You can run away for 3 or 4 seconds until it stops chasing you - unless you want to kill it. It can drop ores, stouts or pickaxes. |
| Smoking Rocks | ||
|
What it does: If you mine the same rock too long it will eventually start smoking. If you keep hitting it, you will cause an explosion, hitting you up to 10hp and breaking your pickaxe. |
What you should do: Stop mining that rock!!! If you do break your pickaxe, you can get it fixed by the Pickaxe Salesman Nurmof in the Dwarven Mine, for a small fee. |
| Pickaxe Splitting | ||
![]() |
What it does: Your pickaxe head will fly off of it's handle and land a few squares away. |
What you should do: Pick up the head and re-attach it by 'using' the head with the handle. |
There are four random events related to fishing:
| River Troll "Fishies be mine, leave dem fishies!" | ||
|
What it does: The River Troll will appear and attack you if you have been fishing in the same spot too long. It's level varies according to yours. Varies between 14 - 159. |
What you should do: Just run away until it stops chasing you, unless you want to kill it. It can drop bait, raw fish, oysters or junk. |
| Big Fish | ||
|
What it does: This sneaky fish will appear and steal your fishing equipment, dropping it on the ground next to you while it destroys the fishing spot for a while. |
What you should do: Pick up your equipment and wait for the fishing spot to come back or move onto another spot. |
| Whirlpools | ||
|
What it does: A whirlpool will engulf the fishing spot, stopping you from fishing in it until it goes away minutes later. |
What you should do: If you try to fish in the whirlpool, you will lose your equipment. Wait for the whirlpool to disappear and the fishing spot to return, or move to another spot. |
| Moving fishing spots | ||
![]() |
What it does: Sometime the fishing spot will just move away out to sea. |
What you should do: Wait for it to come back or move to another fishing spot. |
Here are the random events you can get whilst woodcutting:
| Tree Spirit | ||
|
What it does: The Tree Spirit will appear and attack you if you have been woodcutting for too long. It's level varies according to yours. Varies between 14 - 159. |
What you should do: Just run away until it stops chasing you, unless you want to kill it. It can drop axes, seeds, bananas and runes. |
| Ents | ||
|
What it does: Sometimes when you're chopping trees, the tree you're cutting will turn into an Ent, who will take your axe and break it. |
What you should do: Right before the tree turns into an Ent, you might notice the tree shake. If this happens, stop chopping and move away from the tree. If the Ent does manage to break your axe, you can get it fixed at Bob's Axes in Lumbridge for a small fee. |
| Axe Splitting | ||
| What it does: Your axe head will fly off it's shaft and land a few squares away when you are woodcutting. |
What you should do: Pick up the head and re-attach it to the shaft by 'using' the head with the shaft. | |
In thieving there are some interesting events:
| Watchmen "You are under arrest" | ||
![]() |
What it does: A watchman can appear if you've been thieving too long and attack you. His combat level varies according to yours...the highest seen is 159. |
What you should do: Just run away until he stops chasing you - unless you want to kill him. He can drop coins, nature runes, water runes, body runes, law runes, death runes, herbs, steel bars, mithril medium helms, steel longswords, coal, nature & chaos talismen, uncut gems and dragon spears. |
| Poison Cloud | ||
|
What it does: When you are thieving chests you might be surrounded by a green gas cloud that can poison you! |
What you should do: Move away as quickly as possible and wait for the cloud to dissipate. If you do get poisoned, get away and drink an antipoison potion as soon as possible. |
| Pillory | ||
|
What it does: While you are thieving a guard may appear and send you to the pillory. A local tramp will throw rotten tomatoes at you. |
What you should do: After you are thrown in the cell you will see a puzzle like the one shown below. Just match the key shape up to the lock. When you finish the puzzle you will be transported back to where you were. When you escape you will get a small prize like a gem, a few gp, a half key or a crystal key tooth half. |
![]() | ||
You can get these events while fighting and burying bones too:
| Gravedigger "Come, I need your help..." | ||
| What it does: While burying all types of bones, Leo the Gravedigger will appear to you and teleport you to his cemetery. |
What you should do: Rearrange the coffins into the correct grave by matching the occupation with the grave. If you see ores and a pickaxe on the coffin, bury it in the grave with matching symbols. Once you have correctly buried all 5 coffins you will receive a reward including 2 new emotes and new "zombie" clothing. | |
![]() | ||
| Shade "Leave this place mortal!" | ||
|
What it does: While burying all types of bones, a shade might appear and attack you. It's level depends on yours, but the highest is 159. |
What you should do: Just run away until it stops chasing you, unless you want to kill it. It can drop top and bottom black shade robes. |
| Zombies "Brainssssss....." | ||
|
What it does: Zombies are attracted by the sight of freshly buried bones, and will appear and attack you when you've been burying lots of bones. Their level is based on yours, but the highest seen is 159. |
What you should do: Just run away until it stops chasing you, unless you want to kill it. It can drop bait, chaos runes, nature talismen and all types of bones. |
While you're busily raking your plot of land to plant some crops, you can get these events:
| Defective Farming Tools | ||
| What it does: Poorly manufactured rakes and spades will sometimes fall apart while you're using them. |
What you should do: Put your broken tool back together by "using" one part of the tool with the other. | |
| Capt' Arnav "Ah, hello there, laddie!" | ||
|
What it does: While you're raking your plot or tending to your crops, a pirate will tell you about some treasure that's buried in the patch where you're growing your crops. |
What you should do: Help him get the lid off the treasure chest by solving the combination lock puzzle, and he'll share the contents of the chest with you. If you ignore him, he'll mug you and teleport you to a remote location. Possible rewards include gold coins, a gold necklace and a gold bar. If you decide to help him, you'll get a puzzle screen like the one below. To solve the puzzle, all you have to do is match up the pictures with the correct words, like a slot machine. When you're done, click the "unlock" button. |
| ||
As Jagex updated the game they found that, for various reasons, some Random Events did not work out. The following random events appeared for a little while, but have now been removed from the game. You can no longer get any of these events:
| Dr. Ford "Hey there how's your head?" | ||
|
What it does: Sometimes when you're mining and you're not careful, a chunk of the rock you're pounding away at may fly off and hit you on the head. This can also happen if you're a little too enthusiastic whilst woodcutting -- a piece of the tree you're cutting down may fall off and hit you. If this happens, the eccentric Dr. Ford will appear to make sure you're alright. |
What you should do: Count the number of fingers Dr. Ford holds up for you to count. If you get them right, he'll give you a treat. But don't ask him for a lollipop; the good doctor is of the opinion that lollipops are bad for you. Instead, you'll get a piece of fruit, like a banana, pineapple chunks, lemon or lime slices or orange slices. If you get the answer to his test wrong, or you don't do the test, you'll be teleported to a quiet place where you can recover from your accident. |
| ||
| Tangle Vine | ||
|
What it does: Apparently, tangle vines are quite rare. These vines can start growing in any area, and will start growing around your feet, over about 10 squares, rather like ivy on walls. |
What you should do: DON'T MOVE. Any NPC or player caught moving will be attacked and damaged. You cannot hit the vine back or kill it, so just stay still for 30 seconds or so. |
For many years of Runescape's history, some people would argue that having 99 in a skill was pointless. They did have some good arguments. Their first point was that there is only a slight difference in ability between a person who got 99 in a skill, and a person that stopped levelling after "maxing out" a skill. A person with only 35 mining is able to mine iron almost as well as a person that has 99. Their other point was that you would get no recognition for your hard work if you got 99 in something that didn't affect your combat level. The only skill that really needs 99 to do everything in it is smithing, and combat skills will affect your combat level so other people can see it. But cooking? Fletching? Who would know that you've spent hours of your time clicking those lobsters and that fire, or that you've seen thousands of bow strings through your inventory?
Naturally, they would also argue that doing quests was equally pointless. For the most part, quests are aimed at the middle level player instead of the higher level player. Therefore, most of the rewards will not benefit the higher level. And of course, there was no recognition for it. Sure, you could get a nice cape to signify you finished a quest, but it's not as strong as other capes most of the time, and sooner or later, thousands of people have it as well, making the feeling of accomplishment go away.
Finally, Jagex decided that the unrecognized, dedicated people who actually work to get 99 in a skill or spend time completing every quest should get their well-deserved recognition. With the release of achievement capes, you can walk into a crowd and be recognized for what you have done. To show off even more, you can even use a special emote that is specifically related to your Cape! Not only do they look great, but they also have a rather nice defense bonus.
When you reach 99, you will be given a congratulatory message in your text box area that tells you that you can now wear the achievement cape. Get 99k gp, and find the "master of the skill" that you want. When you talk to them, you will be given the option to buy the skill cape. If you do, you get the cape and a matching hood.
If instead of doing skills, you enjoy doing quests, then you can get the quest point cape. You won't get a message saying that you have completed every quest, so just go to the Wise Old Man if you have. When you log on after a new quest has been released, you will see a message telling you that a new quest has been released, and the cape and hood will appear in your inventory. If you do not have enough inventory space, they will try to go to your bank. If your bank happens to be full as well, the Wise Old Man will find them laying on the ground and hold them for you free of charge. You will not be able to wear the hood or the cape until after you complete the newest quest. Just remember, completing the quest may not be the only thing you have to do. A good example is the Rag and Bone Man quest. After you finish the main part of the quest, you have to complete his wish list to actually be considered as finished.
If you are one of those persistent people who have reached 99 in more than one skill, you get a special reward. Instead of a plain cape that only has the symbol of your skill, you will get that cape with a coloured trim on its' edges. There is no price difference, and you get the same stats as a normal skill cape except for an additional +4 prayer bonus.
| Cape/Hood | Who sells it | Description of Emote |
| Attack |
Speak to Ajjat inside the Warriors Guild in Burthorpe. | You punch at the air and have force waves form from your hands. Then you jump from the ground and do an upward punch. |
| Strength |
Speak to Sloane in the Warriors Guild in Burthorpe. | A heavily-weighted barbell falls from the sky. You pick it up and lift it with only the slightest difficulty. |
| Defense |
Speak to Harlan, the tutor that teaches melee combat to newcomers in Lumbridge. He stands south of the General store. | You block some arrows that are shot at you with your left shield. With your smaller, right shield, you block some more. After that, a rock falls from the sky, and you block it from crushing you. |
| Hitpoints |
Speak to Surgeon General Tafini in the Dueling arena hospital. | Arrows shoot at you and you cycle from a person in underclothes to just the muscles of a person, to a skeleton. Then you pull all three arrows out of you and raise your hands in triumph. |
| Range |
Speak to the armour salesman in the Ranging Guild. | Very unsafely, you shoot an arrow straight into the sky. As it falls, it catches fire and smashes into the ground. |
| Prayer |
Speak to brother Jerred in the Monastery west of Edgeville. | Heavenly light shines down and your cape turns into wings and has you hover in the air for a second. |
| Magic |
Speak to the man who sells magic robes in the Magic Guild. | You jump and rotate in the air while a magical aura surrounds you. |
| Cooking |
Speak to the head cook in the Cooking Guild. Don't forget your chef's hat! | You pull a pan out and flip the crust of a pie high into the air. Then you do the same with the meat. When the meat lands the final time, you take the meat pie and hold it above your head. |
| Woodcutting |
Speak to the woodcutting tutor in Lumbridge. He is south of the furnace. | A tree with a bird's nest grows right in front of you. You take your handy axe and chop at it. With each chop, the tree gets shorter and shorter until the nest hits the stump, and you catch the egg on the edge of your axe. |
| Fletching |
Speak to Hickton in the Catherby fletching store. | You are suddenly leaning on a thin log. You quickly hack it into the shape of a bow, bend it into an arc and string it. |
| Fishing |
Speak to the master fisher that stands outside the Fishing Guild. | A small dock with a fishing spot appears. You spear a fish in it, hold it up for a trophy picture, and then throw it over your shoulder. |
| Firemaking |
Speak to Ignatius Vulcan in the forest south of Seers. | You make a ball of fire form in your hand and you display it for everyone to see. |
| Crafting |
Speak to the master crafter inside of the Crafting Guild. Don't forget your brown apron, that's a long and irritating walk. | You hold your hands that are holding a chisel and a hammer in the air. Then you quickly get to work crafting a log below you into a cat statue. |
| Smithing |
Speak to the dwarf Thurgo south of Port Sarim. He lives below the cliffs. | An anvil with a bar appears in front of you. You hammer at it and hold up a short sword. You put it down, hammer again and hold up an axe. Then you hammer it again and hold up a long sword. |
| Mining |
Go to the Mining Guild and speak to one of the dwarves that guard the ladders to Falador. | A rock appears from the ground. You swing a pickaxe at it with such force that it explodes into pieces. |
| Herblore |
Speak to Kaqemeex at the Guthix altar north of Taverly. | With great flourish, you mix a potion and hold it in front of you as it bubbles. |
| Agility |
Go to the agility arena in Brimhaven and speak to Cap'n Izzy No-Beard. | Three poles spring up from the ground. You jump from the lowest first one to the next one, then the final one. After you get to the top, you jump down and spin around one of the poles until you reach the bottom. |
| Thieving |
Speak to Martin Thwait in the Rogues' Den below Burthorpe pub. | A barrel that shines with what may be gold appears on your back and you crouch and look both directions for people that may be watching you make your getaway. |
| Slayer |
Duradel in Shilo village will give you your slayer cape. | A small Turoth attacks you from behind. You grab it, throw it in the air, and jump on it once it hits the ground. |
| Farming |
Speak to Martin the master gardener in the Draynor Village square. | A watering can appears in your hand and as you water the ground, flowers begin to grow and bloom. You pick one and sniff it. |
| Runecrafting |
Go to the rune store behind the east bank in Varrock and talk to Aubury. | You reach down and draw the magical force of the world from all the elements to you. Runes circle you and then fade into your body. |
| Construction |
Speak to the Estate Agent north east of Varrock. | You quickly build a one-square house around you. |
| Quest Point |
Speak to the Wise Old Man in his house in Draynor. | A quest point symbol appears over your head and electricity shoots from it to the ground. You fight the force, but are lifted into the air and dropped. Electricity then sparks off of your body. |

Do the capes do anything else you ask? Of course they do. A little flash isn't all that useful and rewarding is it? If you put on the cape, the matching skill's max level will increase to 100. Alternately, you can right click the cape if you are wearing it and click operate. How is this helpful? A 1 level difference can be helpful in completing tasks. Lose your cooking gauntlets? You will burn next to no sharks at 100 cooking! There are many other uses for it as well, such as rune mining in the wilderness, or fishing sharks. The higher your level, the easier it is to get these hard to obtain materials. If you have a cape for a skill that having 100 in does not make any difference, it is still wonderful to see one of your stats in the triple digits without drinking a potion.
Tradeable items are rare and considered valuable when there is a finite supply of the item, driving prices up. Such tradeable items were either dropped only once (Holiday Rares) or discontinued (Non-Holiday Rares). In both cases the supply is limited and there is a continuing sales market in the game. Non-tradeable Holiday Items cannot be sold, so their value is only to show off how long you have been playing (since the time they were dropped). All of these types are explained in this guide. Treasure Trail rewards are not considered rare, as their quantities are not limited. Refer to the Treasure Trail Guide to see these items.
Holiday items were dropped on certain holidays throughout the year and could be found in random places all over the RuneScape world. Since these items were only dropped on that holiday, the tradeable ones became rare and eventually valuable and expensive.
In 2001, these items were a total surprise. People were wandering around the world trying to get them, unaware of how valuable they would grow in the future. Party Hats have now grown to be 'the' symbol of wealth in the game. People who have all six different coloured party hats have a 'party hat set'.

In 2003, new holiday drop items were created to be untradeable. This was because the makers of the game did not like to see players hoarding old drops and selling them for huge profits. Jagex said that all future holiday drops would not be tradeable, because these items were not meant to be worth millions of gp, they were meant to be for fun. Many people were upset because they could not trade the newest 2003 drop items to friends who weren't online for that particular holiday. Things got so bad that there was no Christmas drop.
| YEAR 2003 | |
| Bunny ears | |
![]() |
These were dropped on Easter 2003. They were the first non-tradeable holiday drop. Also, players couldn't get another pair. A message said "You don't need another pair of bunny ears, you only have 1 head." Originally, if players dropped them or died with them, they would reappear in inventory. Now, players have to go to Thessalia's clothing shop in Varrock to get them back. |
| Scythe | |
|
|
These were dropped on Halloween 2003. These are like Bunny ears, non-tradeable. Also, players couldn't get another pair. A message said, "You already have a scythe you don't need another one". If dropped or lost, players can talk to Thessalia in Varrock (same procedure as Bunny ears.) When equipped it adds 10 to weapon power and 10 to aim. |
After missing a full year of holiday items, Jagex brought them back. During December 2004, Jagex introduced a new system whereby an NPC related to the holiday would give you the item if you talked with him. This NPC would be available for a certain time period around the holiday so that many players could join in the holiday spirit.
| YEAR 2004 | |
| Yo-yo | |
![]() |
For two weeks, Santa appeared in Varrock, Falador, Ardougne, Catherby and Yanille. Players who spoke to Santa got a Yo-yo, which can be right-clicked to do yo-yo tricks. The Yo-yo is not tradeable. |
In 2005 Jagex carried on their holiday NPC approach but with a twist. You had to complete a task for the reward.
| YEAR 2005 | |
| Rubber chicken | |
![]() |
The Easter Bunny appeared in the weeks around Easter 2005. The Bunny gave players baskets to hand out Easter eggs. (These eggs "melted" when the Easter Bunny left Runescape.) After giving out the eggs, the player's reward was a Rubber chicken. When wielded it can whack people. Players can dance like a chicken by choosing the "dance" option (or "operate" when wielding it). |
| Zombie Head | |
![]() |
The zombie head was released for Halloween 2005. Players got it by finding zombies in Lumbridge Swamp that had an "insult" option. When insulted, the zombie dropped its' head! The Zombie head would then fly away and the player had to catch it. |
| Scarves and Hats | |
![]() |
Scarves and Hats were task rewards for Christmas 2005. Players got scarves by painting ornaments (which disappeared at the end of the holiday period.) The more ornaments painted, the greater variety of scarves obtained (there were four different-coloured sets in all). |
| Marionettes | |
![]() |
Marionettes were also a task reward for Christmas 2005. They were obtained by painting ornaments and decorating the Christmas tree in Varrock square (the tree-lighting included a nice cutscene). Marionettes can be red, green, or blue, and are not tradeable. |
In 2006 Jagex continued the holiday NPC task-reward scheme.
| YEAR 2006 | |
| Easter Ring | |
![]() |
Jagex released another holiday event for Easter 2006. The task began by digging outside Falador or Varrock to find eggs or a Magic egg. Eating a Magic egg turned players into bunnies; eating it over a rabbit tunnel caused players to fall in as bunnies. Walking through the tunnel eventually led to the Easter Bunny, who asked players to hand out eggs to the children. (These eggs "melted" when the Easter Bunny left Runescape.) After giving out the eggs, the Easter Bunny gave players an Easter ring. |
| Skeleton Clothing | |
Mask - Shirt - Leggings - Gloves - Boots |
Skeleton clothing was the reward for helping Diango in the Halloween 2006 event. The clothing was obtained by using the Ghost Buster 500, loaded with destabilisers, to dismiss ghosts from possessed toys throughout Diango's workshop. After dismissing three of a colour of Ghost (called geist during the actual event), players could go to Diango to get one piece of the clothing. Skeleton clothing is not tradeable, and can be destroyed by using the "Destroy" option. |
| Jack o'Lantern Mask | |
![]() |
The Jack o'lantern mask was also a reward from the Halloween 2006 event. Players received Jack o'lantern masks in return for cutting ten roots from the evil tree in the center of Diango's workshop. The Jack o'lantern mask is not tradeable, and can be destroyed by using the "Destroy" option. |
| Reindeer hat | |
![]() |
The Reindeer hat and matching flashing nose was a reward from the Christmas 2006 event. Selecting the operate action while wearing it caused you to prance around, stars to glitter over your head and for you to generally "behave like a reindeer". To receive the hat, players had to go talk to Santy Claws over at Musa Point on the island of Karamja. He told them about children being kidnapped by the Gublinchs and offered them some seasonal rewards for rescuing the children. In order to accomplish the task, the players had to travel to the south of the volcano area; make a number of snowballs; pelt the Gublinchs, while having the snowballs equipped, in order for them to get cold and shatter. 10 sets of Gublinch shards had to be gathered up and placed in the cages by Santy Claws in order to complete the task. The Reindeer hat is not tradable, and can be destroyed by using the "Destroy" option. |
| Wintumber tree | |
![]() |
For the first time, during the Christmas 2006 event, Jagex offered members an extra reward. In addition to the reindeer hat, members were given a wintumber tree. This was only offered if the player was on a members' server. Members had to speak to Santy Claws on a members' server before the event was over in order to be able to retrieve the tree in the future from Diango. The wintumber tree could be planted outside a player owned house, either in the garden or the unutilised land surrounding it. The tree could not be planted in a garden hot spot, even if no other plant was there. The wintumber tree is not tradable, and can be destroyed by using the "Destroy" option. |
While it is not possible to obtain Rare Items and/or Rare Holiday Items through any means except buying them from other players, you can obtain the Non-Rare Holiday Items for free in a number of ways, provided you already had them at one time. If you never got bunny ears, you won't be getting them now, sorry. The Bunny ears and Scythe can be retrieved from Thessalia in the Varrock Clothing Shop should they be lost. Zombie heads can be regained by digging with a spade in Lumbridge Swamp. The easiest way to obtain free replacements for these items, though, is either by talking to Diango or building a Toy Box in your house Costume Room (see Construction Guide.).
These items previously existed in RuneScape but due to changes in the game can no longer be obtained. There was only a certain amount of them in the game, and hence they became rare.

Wow, don't you look nice. That hat is simply amazing, and the pants you picked to go with it coordinate so well! I hate to break it to you though, your outfit seems to be missing something... Let's see, you have a hat, a top, a bottom, some gloves and jewellery... What could be missing? Ah ha! A cape. If you pick the right one, you will round the entire outfit out, and make it look spectacular! Not only that, but some capes will show that you've achieved something that many others can't, or they can protect you when push comes to shove.
Let's start here: the standard cape. This may actually be one of the first items you get due to the pesky highwaymen that roam the path intersections between Lumbridge and Falador and attack any adventurer that walks into their path. This is a Free to Play (F2P) cape.

You could just hang on to your black cape, and while it is true that black goes with everything, you should try some different colours. It's actually really simple to get different coloured capes. All you need is a cape and some dye. Use the dye on a cape, and you have a brand new cape! No dye you say? Go see Aggie in Draynor Village. She will give you a small bottle of dye for the ingredients and a small fee. The coloured capes have the same stats as the regular black cape.
If you have a coloured cape, and want a black one again, members can make black mushroom ink and use it on the coloured cape. Members can also go to the dyer in the Northeast corner of Pollnivneach, or purchase ready-made dyes from the shop in Lletya. Note that capes shown in gray shaded rows (in tables below) are members only, and cannot be made or traded on F2P worlds.
| Colour & Cape |

| Red |
Bring 3 redberries and 5 gp to Aggie the Witch in Draynor. |

| Yellow |
Bring two onions and 5 gp to Aggie the Witch in Draynor. |
| Orange |

| Pink |
After you've completed the Hand in the Sand quest, you can buy a bottle of pink dye from Betty in Port Sarim for 20gp. |
| Black |
Use a black mushroom from the Ruins of Uzer on a pestle and mortar with a vial in your inventory |
Maybe you'd prefer a cape made for the cold climates of Runescape. If you have completed the Fremennik Trials quest, you can buy these capes from Yrsa, the clothes shopkeeper in the Rellekka province. They provide the same amount of protection as a regular cape, but they come in a larger variety of colours for a measly 325 gp. These capes can be worn by players who have not completed the quest by purchasing them from a successful quester.

If you enjoy the magic skill, and like the idea of calling the power of the Saradomin, Guthix, or Zamorak upon your enemy, a "god" cape is a great idea. If you have over 60 magic, go to the Mage Arena in the high level members wilderness. If you are able to finish the mini game, you will be given the choice of a god staff and a god cape. To get the cape, go to the bank where you started the mini game and jump into the pool. If you don't have one of the god capes, or have lost your cape, just choose the statue of the god you want, and pray at it. A cape will appear at your feet. When you wear this cape, you will get a hefty magic attack bonus, and you will be able to cast the "god" spell that matches the cape a whole lot better. You can only have one god cape at a time (drop yours and pray at the statue to get another). These capes cannot be traded to other players. Saradomin is the blue cape, Zamorak is the red cape, and Guthix is the Green cape.

Treasure Trails may reward you with a very different God cloak, giving a +3 prayer boost. Level 40 prayer is required to wear these cloaks. They are white and bear the coloured symbol of their respective patron RS god. This time though, you can keep it forever. It is an untradeable members item, so make sure you get yours when you are still a member. The next cape tells everyone that you are known throughout Runescape as a top adventurer, defender of good, and willing to help out the meek. If you have completed the grueling Legends quest, you will be able to buy this for 675 gp from the shopkeeper on the top floor of the Legends Guild. With its tattered bottom and shocking white colour, everyone will know that you have finished the quest. Of course it goes with everything, but be advised - this exclusive cape cannot be traded.

So you don't like helping NPCs in Runescape? Would you rather beat something into the dirt using any means necessary? The next two capes show that not only do you like fighting, but you have dedicated yourself to the many methods of fighting. In the TzHaar caves, you will have to strategically switch combat styles and defence styles to kill the monsters or people the quickest way possible while avoiding death at all times. Both are great accomplishments. It takes many hours to collect enough Tok'kul (TzHaar money) to buy the obsidian cape (which can be traded). It takes a few hours of straight combat to kill the monster that holds the animated fire cape (which cannot be traded).

To many people, the most impressive capes are the capes of achievement. They feel that getting 99 in any skill is pretty much impossible, and to be honest, it is pretty close to it. If you're a member and you have achieved this incredible goal, you can buy an achievement cape for a small fee. If you have 99 in more than one skill, you will get a special trimmed cape for your efforts.
If you don't have the patience to get 99 in a skill, you still have a chance to get an achievement cape. Just complete every quest. After that, you can buy and wear your new cape until the next quest comes out. Obviously, Capes of Achievement cannot be traded. For more information on the various Capes of Achievement and where to get them, refer to our Achievement Capes guide.
Less showing off and more function? That is very easy to do. Just get yourself a wilderness team cape. These handy capes will help you out if you are in the wilderness with a group of friends, and all of you are fed up with attacking each other. If they are not on your friends list, and you all wear the same team cape, they will appear as a blue dot on your mini map, making them much easier to locate. The people on your friends list will still appear green on the map. Another effect of two people wearing a team cape is that it is harder to attack them. If you right click someone with the same cape, you will notice that the "Attack" button has been moved down. This is to make it easier to fight in a group.
Naturally, since these are called wilderness capes, you can only get them in the wilderness. There are 10 salesmen that wander the wilderness selling their capes. Each of them has a spot that they are near, but may stray further. So, if you have 50 gp and are brave enough to venture into the wilderness, you can get these capes, or buy them from another player. Sadly, these capes only function in members, so if you have a free world clan PK, this isn't the thing for you.

This cape doesn't seem useful at first, though does look rather spiffy. You need this cloak to complete the set of H.A.M. clothing, which is needed to do the Death to the Dorgeshuun quest, so it may be worth your while to pick one up. Wearing a complete set of H.A.M. clothing also improves your chances of successfully raising your thieving skill by pickpocketing H.A.M. characters. Ironically, you can get this cloak by pickpocketing those very same H.A.M. members in H.A.M. Headquarters, or buy it from another player.

The Animal Magnetism quest rewards players with an Attractor or Accumulator. When worn in the cape slot, it picks up around 75% of your dropped arrows and deposits them into your arrow slot or pack. Any obstacle between you and the arrows will block this ability. The device also creates metal items (usually arrows, but also ores, bars and various others) from thin air. Walking around gets more arrows than standing still. The Attractor creates iron items and requires range skill level 30; the Accumulator creates steel items and requires range level 50. These devices also give a range bonus!

The Stronghold of Security is a dungeon available for both members and non-members. Players of any level can enter and explore this four-level maze of questioning gates, exotic creatures, and pure fun to receive various rewards and to better learn about security in game.
The dungeon consists of four different levels, each of them being a maze with several doors. There are no specific requirements to complete the maze, however security questions need to be answered to open most of the doors. These are easy questions that verify the player has a basic knowledge of the rules to follow in order to keep his or her account safe, such as the use of password, bank pin or recovery questions. A pink book containing all the necessary security information can be bought from any general store. Read it to keep your account safe and to learn the answers to the security questions in the dungeon.
Although even low-levels can complete the Stronghold of Security, be careful. The dungeon is populated with aggressive monsters level 80 and higher. Good armour is suggested to defend against these monsters, although due to the amount of running involved you should travel as light as possible. Please remember that if you die inside this dungeon you will lose your items.
The entrance to the dungeon is found in the Barbarian Village and consists of a hole in the ground in the middle of the mining area. You can talk to the NPC Litara before you go down and you can search her brother's remains after you enter the dungeon to find his journal. This journal provides information about the dungeon's structure and what lies ahead of you. The dungeon consists of four levels and at each level you have to go from the entrance to the exit by passing through a maze of doors and rooms with monsters. The four levels are named after the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse: The Vault of War, The Catacomb of Famine, The Pit of Pestilence and The Sepulchre of Death. Please note that while the first level is a multi-combat area, the other three are not.
Ladders near the exit point let you go down to the next level, while ladders near the entrance point let you go back up to the previous level (or the surface). There are other ladders in the maze that take you to another part of the dungeon (see the Stronghold of Security Map for more information). A bone chain at the end of the last level can take you back to the surface. After completing a level, it is possible to use a portal near the entrance of the level to go directly to the level's exit. If your combat level is high enough, you can use these portals even if you haven't completed that dungeon level yet. Thus, higher level players can skip the first parts of the dungeon by using the portals.
This huge F2P dungeon is located right under the Barbarian Village. Players from level 3-126 can access it. This rather unique dungeon was created to help teach players how to keep their accounts safe. Besides learning a few things from this dungeon, you can also find various monsters to fight that go to as high level as 86 (found in the lowest level).
Each level also contains a prize. Prizes include four new emotes and some GP. On the deepest level not only will you get GP and a new emote but you will also get to choose from two different looking boots. They both have the same stats, and they are the best boots in F2P. On each level there are monsters that drop pieces of a skull sceptre. Once you have all four pieces you can combine them to make a skull sceptre. The skull sceptre provides five teleports to the Barbarian Village before disintegrating. For more information please see the Stronghold of Security guide.
The Vault of War is the first level of the dungeon. You should move from the entrance point in the NW corner towards the exit point on the East side while passing through several doors of war by answering security questions. You can use the Stronghold of Security Map for help navigating through this maze. This level is populated by goblins (level 5/13), wolves (level 11) and minotaurs (level 12/27). The Minotaurs are not aggressive and they are useful to kill as they drop a part of the skull sceptre (see the Rewards section for more details). Upon arriving at the exit room, you will see a chest that can be searched for 2,000 coins and a new emote. Go down the ladder for the second floor.

The Catacomb of Famine is the second level of the dungeon. You should move from the entrance point in the NE corner towards the exit point in the centre by passing through rickety doors and answering security questions. You can use the Stronghold of Security Map for help navigating through this maze. This level is populated by giant rats (level 26), zombies (level 30/44/53) and flesh crawlers (level 28/41). The Flesh Crawlers are aggressive regardless of your level and they are useful to kill as they drop a part of the skull sceptre (see the Rewards section for more details). Upon arriving at the exit room, you will see the "Grain of Plenty" sack that can be searched for 3,000 coins and a new emote. Go down the ladder for the third floor.

The Pit of Pestilence is the third level of the dungeon. You should move from the entrance point in the SW corner towards the exit point in the centre while passing through several oozing barriers by answering security questions. You can use the Stronghold of Security Map for help navigating through this maze. This level is populated by (giant) spiders (level 24/50), scorpions (level 59) and catablepons (level 49/64/68). The Catablepons are useful to kill as they drop a part of the skull sceptre (see the Rewards section for more details). Upon arriving at the exit room, you will see the "Box of Health" that can be searched for 5,000 coins and a new emote. Searching the "Box of Health" also restores your stats. Go down the ladder for the fourth floor.

The Sepulchre of Death is the fourth and final level of the dungeon. You should move from the entrance point in the East side towards the exit point in the centre while passing through several portals of death by answering security questions. You can use the Stronghold of Security Map for help navigating through this maze. This level is populated by skeletons (level 60/68/85), ghosts (level 76/77) and ankous (level 75/82/86). The Ankous are useful to kill as they drop a part of the skull sceptre (see the Rewards section for more details). When arriving at the exit room, you will see the "Cradle of Life" that can be searched for a new emote and a pair of boots (see the Rewards section for more details). Please keep in mind that you must have your account recovery questions set in order to get the reward from the "Cradle of Life". Congratulations, you have completed the Stronghold of Security and you can now go up to the surface on the bone chain.

You will gain the ability to perform a new emote after each of the four levels you complete. These emotes are: flap, head slap, stamp and idea. Upon completing the last level, and only if you have your recovery questions set, you will also have the choice between two pairs of boots: fancy and fighting. Both have the same stats, they only differ in colour. If you lose your boots or want to change them to the other pair, you only need to search the "Cradle of Life" (by using portals to get there quickly - no need to do the mazes again).

Another reward that can be obtained from the Stronghold of Security is the Skull Sceptre. There are four parts of the sceptre that are obtained as monster drops:
| Sceptre part | Monster | Dungeon Level | |
| Skull Right Half | Minotaur | Level 1 | |
| Bottom of Sceptre | Flesh crawler | Level 2 | |
| Top of Sceptre | Catablepon | Level 3 | |
| Skull Left Half | Ankou | Level 4 | |
After you have at least one of each type of piece you can make the Skull Sceptre. Use the Skull Right Half with the Skull Left Half to get the skull. Next, use the Bottom of Sceptre with the Top of Sceptre to create the handle, then use the skull with the handle. The sceptre can be wielded as a weapon (stats below) and provides 5 teleports to the Barbarian Village after which it disintegrates. If desired, another skull sceptre can then be built. Please note that although it is possible to have several identical sceptre pieces at the same time, it is not possible to have several full sceptres. Just hold on to the extra pieces you have and use them to make another sceptre when the old one disintegrates.

In the world of RuneScape there are many locked doors and chests and so logically there are many keys. This guide is a comprehensive list of all keys in the game. To use a key on an object, such as a door or chest, to unlock it you need to click on the key or the key ring and then click on the door or chest you want to open. The guide is sorted by alphabetical order, but the easiest way to find the key you are looking for is to use the Find feature of your browser. Each key has a picture, followed by its name, where you get it, what it's used for, whether it is members only or not, if it can be traded, if its useful to keep, what quests it's used in, its examine information, and any other useful information.
Note: The find feature is accessed by holding "CTRL" and pressing "F" on most browsers.

You can use a key ring to hold the most common and most used keys in the game. The steel key ring is untradable and is obtained by completing the One Small Favour Quest.
The key ring can hold the following keys:
It is possible to have more than one key ring. If you have two key rings, you can lose one and all your keys will still be on the other one, effectively saving you from having you to get all the keys again. To have more than one key ring, follow these simple steps:
To start off, we will give some tips on hosting and having a great party.
5 Tips to Having a Great Party
1. To host a successful party you should join a forum.
2. Have lots of prizes, games, drops etc.
3. Try to make it sound exciting by making underbanners, colored text and other graphics.
4. Don't make it exclusive unless you only want your friends to come. Say something like "everyone's welcome!"
5. Finally, be enthusiastic!
Games List
Chicken Tag - Chicken Tag is quite a fun game.
Items Needed - Rubber Chicken
Instructions - This game is just like tag. The person that is "it" has to whack another player. Once the player has been whacked they are "it" and must tag someone else.

Hide & Seek - Hide and Seek is another fun game that you can play.
Items Needed - Maybe a prize for the winner.
Instructions - Usually the host of the party goes and hides somewhere in the town or location you are in. You must turn your friends chat off so that no one may find you on the minimap. You should tell them before the game what area you will be hiding in. Once one of the players have found you, you turn your friends chat back on and tell everyone that the game is over.

Skill Races - Skill Races are good games for skill-leveling parties.
Items Needed - Maybe a prize for the winner.
Instructions - The point of the game is to be the fastest miner, woodcutter or other skill leveler. You usually make the race the same skill as you're having the party for. First, you tell everyone to go to a rock, tree or other area nearby. Then you count down from 3 and say "Go!" Everyone must start mining, cutting or otherwise training the skill. The first person to mine a rock, cut a tree or otherwise successfully complete the "task" and trade you is the winner.

Food List
Here are some of the most common types of food used during parties:
Of course, you can bring any type of food that you'd like to bring; these are just some ideas.
Description: A Drop party is a party where the host and friends drop items for others to pick up. They usually do it in different spots as to give others more of a chance and to make it more fun.
Party Place: The best place to host a drop party would be near a big, open area. If you want an exclusive one with just you and your friends I suggest going somewhere like Rimmington. If you want to invite lots of people, I suggest having it somewhere like Falador Park.
Worlds: If you want it to be a private party try to host in an un-crowded world, or if it is crowded host it in a pre-planned building.
Times: Well, if it's a private party with just you and a few friends, you can sort out a good time with them. If you're hosting a big party for a forum then you should check out the Party Times Help topic for help deciding on a good time. Members of the forum community will usually give you feedback on the times.
Games: Games are not needed here. The drop party is the game.
Food: The drop party is usually part of a party. But if you are holding a single drop party going back to a pub after or buying a few beers is a good way to end a drop party.
Planning: It's good to tell people in advance through e-mail or RuneScape. If you're on a forum, try to set it out nicely with colorful headings and under-banners etcetera. PM people, make a guest list and post the event about 1-2 weeks before it's going to happen.
Description: A birthday party is celebrating your day of birth. This should include lots of games, prizes and food. If you really want to you could have a Pking trip. But it is recommended to do this at the end as it breaks up the group.
Party Place: There are many places to hold Birthday parties. If you are a member of this forum, a good place is the party house in Falador. You can hold it anywhere you want though. Try holding it in a house so only you and your friends can talk and play. Falador is probably the best place as it has lots of houses to choose from.
Worlds: Preferably a world that you have already arranged. A good world would be the least crowded one that is closest to your country.
Times: Well, if it's a private party with just you and a few friends, you can sort out a good time with them. If you're hosting a big party for a forum then you should check out the Party Times Help topic for help deciding on a good time. Members of the forum community will usually give you feedback on the times.
Games: Choose the ones you want from the above list.
Food: You need lots of yummy food for parties. Gnome Cocktails will do well. Lots of beer and meat and redberry pies.
Planning: It's good to tell people in advance through e-mail or RuneScape. If you're on a forum, try to set it out nicely with colorful headings and under-banners etcetera. PM people, make a guest list and post the event about 1-2 weeks before it's going to happen.
Description: A Skill Leveling Party usually means you have achieved a high level in a particular skill. These are just usually a few screenshots and a Skill-Leveling Race that ends with a few beers. However, you can make it as exciting as you want. But you usually do the above with these types of parties.
Party Place: You usually hold your party at the place you raised the skill in. For example, if you got level 85 Mining you would hold it in Dwarven Mines or a similar place. Or you could start at a pub and make your way to the mines, whatever takes your fancy.
Worlds: Preferably a world that you have already arranged. A good world would be the least crowded world that is closest to your country.
Times: Well, if it's a private party with just you and a few friends, you can sort out a good time with them. If you're hosting a big party for a forum then you should check out the Party Times Help topic for help deciding on a good time. Members of the forum community will usually give you feedback on the times.
Games: Naturally, you would play the Skill-Leveling game as that's what the party is about. But you can spice it up with the other games if you would like.
Food: Please choose from the above list of foods
Planning: It's good to tell people in advance through e-mail or RuneScape. If you're on a forum, try to set it out nicely with colorful headings and under-banners. PM people, make a guest list and post the event about 1-2 weeks before it's going to happen.
Description: Having a party at your house is a great way to hang out! There are many sorts of house parties such as Dungeon parties - these normally attract a lot of guests. There is also combat parties, including lots of combat and fighting!
Party Place: Your House!
Worlds: World 6 is very good as there is lots of people there, but sometimes it can be hard to attract guests since lots of people with high construction come here trying to get guests come to their house, only go to world 6 if you have high construction! If you have a fairly low construction go to a packed world closest to your location.
Times: At night is the best, never have a party in the morning since most people have School or College to attend.
Games: If you have a games room, put some money in the chest and play some games, many people like combat so add a combat room if you can! For the higher levels a scary dungeon is recommend! Having an oubliette and throne room is great since you can send people into the cage below, wondering what horrors await them!
Food: The kitchen will be the main source at a house, you can make a few snacks like tea and cakes. In the kitchen also is a beer barrel where your guests can get free beer.
Planning: You don't normally have to plan these since you can get lots of guests at the house portal, if you want you can advertise on the forums or sending friends PM's.
The Combat Triangle is basically a relationship between the different fighting-style classes in RuneScape. It consists of Warriors, Mages and Rangers, each using their own unique style of fighting to an advantage toward an enemy. Each class also has a disadvantage toward another enemy which makes them weaker.
In a normal situation, the Combat Triangle is as follows:
A normal situation is one where each class' main skill is about equal to one another. If there's a huge difference in levels, the Triangle could fall apart. A difference in your primary skill's level from about 5-10 could "tilt" the triangle.
The Combat Triangle was implemented to give each class a 'fighting chance' against one enemy, and a disadvantage against another. In short, this has to do with different skills, weapons and armor used by each class.
Rangers Defeat Mages
A Ranger is able to defeat a Mage because of the fact that their armor mainly consists of Leather, which will not conduct Magical attacks. Rangers can attack quickly from a distance, which is one of the Mage's main specialties. Effectively, the Mage has lost it's main advantages towards the enemy. Magical attacks are much slower and weaker than Ranged attacks, and Wizard Robes will actually lower the Mage's Ranged Defense.
Mages Defeat Warriors
A Mage can defeat a Warrior in Battle due to the fact that a Warrior's heavy plate armor will conduct Magic and the attacks will be stronger. Warriors are unable to attack from a distance like a Mage can, so while the fighter is trying to advance on the Mage, strong Magical attacks are causing big damage.
Warriors Defeat Rangers
Warriors are strong against Rangers because their plate armor will deflect the Ranger's arrows and cause very little damage to the Warrior. The Archer has no way to stop the Warrior from attacking him, and Leather doesn't protect well from strong physical attacks.
It's actually possible to "bend" the Combat Triangle so that the opposite of the above situations may occur. This requires patience and strategy, and may take several times to get it right.
Mage Defeating a Ranger
Normally, a Mage will be hunting for Warriors in the Wilderness, with the only worry of the occasional stray Ranger. Remember, a Mage can teleport if things are looking bad, so you're granted an easy escape.
Armor: Bring some Wizard Robes, but if you feel too vulnerable bring a good set of plate legs too. Plate Legs do not penalize your magic attacks as much as Helmets or Plate Bodies, but be sure to teleport quickly enough or you may lose them. You can take along a shield too, but remember that they penalize your magical attacks.
Weapons: Bring a Staff of Fire because Fire spells are usually the most powerful, and the staff will cut down on the need to buy fire Runes.
Other Equipment: Take plenty of chaos and air Runes, as well as some Runes to Teleport, cast Bind and Curse. Air Runes are easy to craft, and Chaos Runes will respawn in the Wilderness. Also, bring some decent food, and optionally a Wizards Mind Bomb.
Strategy: The golden rule of killing a Ranger with a Mage is that if you can hit them, they can hit you. But, the longer the distance is between you and your enemy, the better chance of winning you have. So, keep a long distance, and mage him as fast as you can. Remember to set the spell as your default attack so you can quickly engage him. Don't use your high level attack spells until last, when you're sure you can finish him off.
Extra Tip: It's often less costly to simply run away or teleport than wasting tons of Runes getting a useless kill that will give you at most a couple hundred arrows. Be sure it's worth your time.
Warrior Defeating a Mage
Normally, Warriors wander the Wilderness looking for Rangers. Their strength is a great advantage.
Armor: Rather than using your expensive (and heavy!) set of plate armor, bring some leather armor instead. It provides excellent defense against magic, easy to craft, less costly to buy, and it also weighs less so that you can run for longer periods of time. You should also bring an Anti-Dragon Breath Shield, or a wooden one which respawns just north of Varrock.
Weapons: The best bet to defeat a Mage would be to use a Mithril Scimitar or an Adamantite Long Sword (better metal is good too!), because they have fast attack speeds and a decent amount of damage.
Other Equipment: The standard Warrior gear is always helpful, which includes some Strength Potions, and food such as tuna or lobsters. A so-called "defense cabbage" may also help.
Strategy: Make a character whose stats are: 40 attack, as high strength as you can make it, and 40 defense. Get 40 ranged, so you can wear full green dragon armor. Make sure your ranged doesn't effect your combat level. Now the hardest part: Get 37 prayer! This will allow you to take half damage from all magical attacks in the wilderness! Now get a rune short sword, which attacks fast and an Anti-Dragon Breath shield, and you will be the perfect anti-Mager.
Extra Tip: Rush! Rush! Rush! You want to tank through this mage, and annihilate him. Take maybe half a second to gulp a strength potion, and then rush him.
Ranger Defeating a Warrior
My favorite combo. Archers are fun to use and can be lethal to warriors as well as mages in the right hands.
Armor: Green dragon, full, no exceptions. If you use a crossbow (bad idea!) then you may want to use a shield, but I strongly recommend you use neither a crossbow nor a shield.
Weapons: Take an Oak Longbow or Shortbow, as well as about 50 Steel arrows and 100 Bronze per trip.
Other Equipment: Depending on how much money you have, you may want to bring a spare bow or extra arrows. You should also bring some Teleport runes.
Strategy: Your stats, being a ranger, should be about 1 Attack, 40 Defense, 1 Strength, and 50-ish ranged. Now, give or take 10 levels and you are still a ranger! Now get 20 or 25 magic! This may seem like a shock to you, but if you want to beat warriors consistently, you need it! 25 Magic if you want to Teleport; 20 if you aren't worried about that. What does 20 magic do? Bind! Bind can stop a warrior in his tracks while you range him! Now, if you want to Bind him from far away, then longbow, up close? Shortbow. Plan accordingly.
To make a good PKer of any sort, you need to be good at cooking and fishing, as well as RuneCrafting. You also need a great deal of money to buy your supplies. And, if you want to beat ANYBODY in the Wilderness, your stats will have to be 99 of everything. So go get em... one PKer at a time
To be a successful merchant, you must be keen, quick sighted and most of all, patience is the key to success. If you are none of those, then don't bother becoming a merchant because you will be quickly bored. So let's get started already.

Difficulty: Easy
Money Needed: 25,000gp or more.
Probably the easiest way to merchant, Willow merchanting is quick, easy and a reliable way to make fast, easy money. Lets start by going to Draynor Village, a small Willow tree-infested village south and a little east of Falador:

On almost any world, travel to the part with the willow trees (right next to the bank) and start buying all the willows you can afford, (don't worry about losing all your money, if you do this right, you should get even more than before!) for no more than 25gp each.
Once you have a decent amount of willows, bank them, note them and switch to world 1 and sell them for 30 each in Draynor bank.
There you have it. Willow merchanting. Easy to do and probably the most common way of merchanting. Buying more willows means you can make even more money, so just risk it, and buy as many as you can to make larger profits of cash.
Difficulty: Medium
Money Needed: 250,000gp or more.
A good way to make profits of around 100-200k very easily is to merchant death runes. Varrock is a good place to start this. Go to the runes shop (located on the map with an icon like this:
) in an empty world.
Now start buying death runes like crazy. Keep swapping worlds if the shop runs out. A good tip for this is to buy over 1k deaths to make the larger profits of money (recommended)
Now that you have over 1k of deaths (recommended), it's time to swap to world 1, making sure that you are still in varrock. Now head over to the west bank once you've loaded the world and start selling the deaths you bought for 280- 300 each. Don't go lower or you will not benefit from the larger profits.
As you may have noticed after selling the deaths, you've become a lot richer than before. Enjoy the extra cash!
This is one of the prime ways to make a lot of easy and quick money and can also be used in the same way on chaos runes. Just follow the same order (although you will get less of a profit by using chaos).
Difficulty: Medium
Money Needed: 250,000gp or more.
Another good way to make large profits of money is with yew merchanting.
The best place to start this is Edgeville. For those of you who don't have a clue where Edgeville is, I have provided a map below of where it is located on the world map. It is in between Varrock and Falador:

Go to the part of Edgeville where the yew trees are:
on almost any world and start buying yews from people chopping the trees there for 250 each.
Once you have done this and have around 1k yews, go to varrock west bank (one without stairs) and sell to people for 280 - 300 each and making your quite large profit of 30k or more.
Difficulty: Medium
Money Needed: About 200,000gp.
Another way to make large profits of money is by Coal merchanting.
First, go to Falador (a little west of Barbarian Village). If you don't know where it is, check out this map here:

Now, go to Falador east bank (next to Mining Guild) on an empty world such as world world 62 and buy all the coal you can for 120 - 150 gp each. Buy around 1k or more, depending on how much of a profit you want to make, then bank and note it all and transfer to world 1 (when possible).
Staying in this same bank, start selling all of your coal to people right outside the doors of the bank for 180 - 200 each! Once done, guess what? You've made yourself an easy 30-40k* profit!
*You should receive about 30-40k profit for about 1k of coal. Try buying more than 1k coal to increase your profit!
Now move on to the next tip which is...
Difficulty: Hard
Money Needed: About 300,000-350,000gp.
This is a common way to make even larger profits of money from merchanting and it is called Big bone merchanting.
To start (make sure you have around 300k), simply go to Varrock west bank and start buying as many Big Bones as you can for 300 each.
Don't bother trying to buy over 1k or more Big Bones in a not-so-populated world, because most people will transfer to world 1 and sell there instead.
Once you have around 1k (or more) Big Bones, go to world 1, same bank, same place and sell all of them for 400 each!
There you go, although it can take a long time to buy all those Big Bones, the huge profits you can make should keep you quiet!
Difficulty: Hard
Money Needed: 300,000-400,000gp or more.
Law rune merchanting is a slow, but rewarding way to make profits of over 100k!
To start: Go to varrock west bank, world 1 and 3 and buy as many law runes as you can for 300-400 gp each. This should take quite a while, seeing as laws are hard to obtain and buy.
Once you have about 1k of laws *phew... finally...*, it is time to sell them, so sell them all 400-500 each and guess what? You've just made a very good profit! That was an easy 100k+!
Difficulty: Medium
Money Needed: 1,500,000gp or more.
A good way to make high profits is Steel bars Merchanting. First go to World 1 or 3 Falador East bank and start buying steel bars for 550 each.
You will get small amounts of steel bars, but in no time you will have 1,000 to 3,000 steel bars.
Now wait until the "rush hour" (Mostly around 3:30 - 5:00 GMT) and go sell your bars for 600 - 650 each. You will make a profit of at least 50,000 to even 300,000! Sometimes, higher leveled buy for 650 each. But it doesn't happen everyday.

Thieving is a very useful Members-Only skill that can be used to make quick cash as you get higher in levels. To make big cash you will need at least 50 Thieving, so if you aren't a high enough level, follow these steps to increase your level:
Now that you're level 50 thieving, you should be able to easily pickpocket guards to get some good amounts of gp.
In order to use the High Alchemy magic spell, you need at least 55 Magic. Firstly, decide what you think may be the quickest for you to make. If you have a high enough Mining and Smithing level, you can smith Steel Platemail. Someone who has a high Fletching level can make Yew or Magic bows.
| Commonly High-Alched Items | |
| Item | High Alchemy Price |
|---|---|
| Magic Longbow | 1,536gp |
| Steel Platemail | 1,200gp |
| Magic Shortbow | 960gp |
| Yew Longbow | 768gp |
| Yew Shortbow | 480gp |
Smithing Levels
Making Money With Fletching
Mining is one of the most vital skills in RuneScape. Everyone should have at least 40 Mining, so here's how you can level up if you aren't already level 40. You may also want to bank the ores later.
Now that you have a Mining level of 40, it should be easier to mine Coal. Even though you only need 30 Mining for Coal, it would be much more difficult to mine it at that level. You should also buy either an Adamantite or Rune pick.
For Members, a great place to mine coal is at the mine near Ardougne, and a bank is nearby. Free-Players can mine in the Dwarven mines, but there isn't a bank very close to you.
Some time ago, Smithing was voted the most popular non-combat skill in the official RuneScape Polls. It can be a long, hard and tedious skill at times, but it gives the greatest rewards. In the early days of RuneScape, you could sell a Rune 2-Hander for 1 million gp!
You need to be at least level 48 Smithing to be a good Smither. You can buy your own ores if you have the money, or you could mine the ores yourself. Unless you have a Ring of Forging, don't smith iron!
Now that you've got ten to level 48 Smithing, you can incorporate this method of earning money with method 2 - High Alchemy.
Earning Money From Steel
Mithril at Level 68
Steel appears to be better since you can make more money with fewer coal, and iron is much easier to get than Mithril. At level 99, go for the big kill...
Merchanting is making money from the market by buying and selling things such as armor, weapons and food. With merchanting, you don't raise any skills. However, you get a deep insight into RuneScape and how the economy works, and you could probably control it once you master it!
The rule of using Merchanting to gain a profit is: Buy low, sell high. You need to have at least a 500,000gp investment to make a big profit. To do this, take a look at one of the other methods mentioned in this guide. Once you have a good-sized investment:
Merchanting Tips
By following these tips, your customer will respect you and want to do business with you.
There are several monsters that are quite worthwhile to kill. This method doesn't explain how to kill monsters, but it offers a short bestiary which you can choose a kind of monster to kill.
You Should Also Have...
Stats: At least 70 Attack, Defense and Hits. Also, you should have around 80 Strength, 60-80 Magic and 50 Prayer.
Bring: Lots of good food such as Bass or Shark, a Ring of Wealth, Prayer Potions, and Anti-DragonBreath Shield, and a back-up friend.
| Bestiary | ||
| Monster | Where to Find | Loot |
|---|---|---|
| Blue Dragon (111) | Taverly Dungeon | Dragon Bones, Rune Items, Runes, Mithril Items |
| Fire Giant(86) | Waterfall | Dragon Helmet, Rune Items, Runes, Half Key. |
| Black Dragon (227) | Taverly Dungeon | Dragon Bones, Coins, Runes, Rune Items, Dragon Helmet & Spear |
| King Black Dragon (276) | Near the Lava Maze | Dragon Bones, Coins, Runes, Rune Items, Dragon Helmet & Spear |
Fishing is a very useful skill, not only to make money, but for yourself to use. It can also help you with the above method, Dragon & Giant Slaying. You need a minimum of 50 Fishing until you can start making a big profit from this method.
Lobsters sell for around 100-200gp each. At level 80, fish for Sharks and sell them for about 700-1,000gp each.
RuneCrafting is a great skill to gain money from selling your Runes, but you need at least level 35.
Of course, you can sell Chaos Runes for 50-200gp each, but you should save these to level your Magic up. Remember, at level 44 you can make Nature Runes which can be sold for 300-500gp each!
